  • "The property is in the most ideal location possible."

The facilities are excellent and well kept. There are even a few little extras like board games to play. I would highly recommend. The only thing that could be improved was the comfort of the mattresses.

Thank you so much for your comments! I’m glad you had a pleasant stay at Millgate and enjoyed the facilities we provide. I’m sorry you weren’t happy with the mattress! They are all less than two years old and we tried to invest in good quality items. I shall personally check them and aim to supplement them with toppers to provide a more comfortable experience. I do hope you will visit again in the future. Many thanks! Property Owner

  • "Great property very central and in really good decorative condition and well equipped should you want to prepare a meal."

The parking spot is tight as mentioned in previous feedback, we did manage to get our car in the space ( Audi A4 ) which may help future guests, we will return at some stage return as we had a very comfortable stay and enjoyed our stay in Richmond.

Hello Steve, Thank you so much for the positive feedback! We are glad you enjoyed Millgate and look forward to welcoming you back soon. The car parking area is small but some people do manage to get rather large vehicles on there! If in doubt there are lots of other options in the town a short walk away. Thank you again for your visit! Wendy & Joe Property Owner

Hello Joanne, Thank you for your lovely comments! I’m sorry you couldn’t get any tv channels, I’m not sure why that is but will check it out with the current visitors. We are always happy to come out and attend to issues whilst you are in residence. Thank you! Property Owner

Yes the parking space is tiny but with guidance I got in it ….but then couldn’t get out of the car

  • "We had a lovely week with the dogs, loved getting up and walking along the river each morning before breakfast."

Cottage perfect to get to so many places we would definitely come back in the future and bring family with us. A dressing table and mirror to do hair and make up would be good save time and fighting hubby for the bathroom. One bad point washing machine drawer is in need of a clean, the rest of the cottage was lovely and clean. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the cottage to family and friends.

Thank you so much for your lovely comments, we are glad you enjoyed your stay at Millgate! We have increased the numbers of mirrors at the cottage but will certainly consider swapping a set of drawers for a dressing table in the future. I apologise for over looking the cleaning of the washing machine drawer, I shall see to it myself in the next few days. I hope you will return to Richmond and 21 Millgate soon and do bring family! Thank you so much. Property Owner

  • "Fantastic cottage, that was really well equipped with everything you need."

Great location right on the doorstep of Richmond square, where there are some great pubs and restaurants. We had 2 cars as our kids came to stay for 1 night, parking overnight at the car park near the cricket ground a short walk away was easy enough and cost less than a fiver for 24 hours. Instructions re extra parking wasn’t clear in the website but rung the owner who was really helpful and friendly. Would definitely return to this cottage and highly recommend it, thank you x

Thank you for your positive feedback! We are glad you had a lovely holiday in Richmond. As a historic town parking can be tricky at times. We are lucky to have a small parking space adjacent to the cottage and for larger cars there are other options around the town. We have put these in the visitor folder but I will try to make this more obvious on the website if possible. We hope you will visit again sometime. Thank you! Property Owner

  • "This is a lovely cottage in a great location."

In terms of things that could be improved: The single mattress needs replacing, you can feel the springs poking through. Not ideal. The shower isn't hot enough, the knob won't allow you to turn up the heat and the shower head doesn't fit properly in the holder. The seat cushions on the sofa slide off after minutes of sitting down. You keep having to get up and push them back. I'd say the cottage was clean enough, but not very clean. I swept the kitchen floor after two days and there was a lot of dust and dog hair (we don't have a dog). On the whole we had a great stay though and would come back.

Hello Claire, I am sorry that certain aspects of the cottage did not meet your expectations. I have raised cleaning issues with the cleaning team, they usually provide an excellent service and will be disappointed that you weren’t satisfied on this occasion. The settee and mattresses were new in May when the cottage opened for business. I will certainly look at the single bed and see how it can be improved to provide more comfort. We visit the cottage regularly and haven’t noticed any issues with the shower but I will assess and make improvements as necessary. It may be that the temperature needs turning up in the boiler cupboard. Property Owner

It's right in the heart of Richmond, which has great pubs and restaurants, and wonderful walks. Don't forget to take £1 coins for the £ 15 weekly parking ticket though, as this cannot be paid by card.

  • "The cottage is advertised as having off street parking."

That is only true if you arrive in a very small car, the cpttage sleeps 5 so most people wont arrive in a very small car. You can park in the town square bot only for 2 hours. There is a pay car park around a houndred yards away but you can only stay there for 4 hours max. The walk from the car park to the cottage is up a very steep hill and is not suitable for older people like ourselves. The TV did not work properly on our arrival, someone was sent to try and fix it, they couldnt, so we were told to use catch up tv etc to view the TV. This again did not work other than for one channel as the others had not been registered and you needed a pass word. We did ring several times to try and get this sorted but to no avail. I know we were on holiday but the weather was poor and the Euros were on so having a functioning TV was important to us, The place was also not clean we had to clean tea cups that were stained, was the bath prior to use and there was a lot of dogs hair on the seats and in clumps on the floor. We sent photos of the hair clumps to the owner who basically told us that the cottage is videoed after each stay and basically made us feel as though we were making it up. All in all very disappointing.

Thank you for your feedback, I am disappointed that you did not enjoy your holiday with us and have taken your complaints seriously. May I point out that the cottage particulars quite clearly states that the parking space is only suitable for a very small car. We also point out that due to the location and type of property, it may not be suitable for very young children or those with mobility issues. We came out to look at the television, it appeared that someone had most likely interfered with the settings and a couple of channels were lost. We managed to reset the channels that were missing when we came out as requested, the TV was not broken. We also have a fantastic cleaning team, the caretaker would have been more than happy to come out, inspect the problem and put it right if we had been contacted about this during your stay. We will continue to work hard to make sure that Millgate is a clean and comfortable place to spend your holiday. Property Owner

  • "Beautiful grade II listed cottage."

Perfect location a two minute walk to the river and Falls and only 30 seconds to the market place. Very smart decor sympathetic to the character. Downsides are steep steps in the pretty tiered garden. But that's not a surprise due to the building's age. It could also do with another loo but again, difficult due to the listing aspect. I thoroughly recommend the cottage. We had an amazing time there. And it's dog friendly.

  • "We loved this cottage the moment we walked through the door, it is well equipped and has everything you could need for a holiday in this beautiful part of the country."

It is in the shadow of the Castle in a lovely side street. The cottage is in an ideal position for touring the area and is also within minutes of shops, pubs and cafes/restaurants. Restaurants in the town get booked up early so I'd recommend planning meals out early! Parking at the property is not really available to anything other than a small hatchback and parking in the market square is time limited. We bought a £15.00 weekly parking pass but it doesn't apply to the disc controlled market area and doesn't cover anywhere outside the Richmondshire area so we'd recommend that parking is paid for on an ad hoc basis. We had a wonderful holiday!

About the location

RICHMOND

Barnard Castle 10 miles; Leyburn 12 miles.

Situated at the entrance to Swaledale, the ancient market town of Richmond stands on a prominent hilltop site to the north of the River Swale. Its cobbled streets and narrow alleys or 'wynds' enshrine over nine centuries of busy history and unique character. The town grew up around its castle, a Norman fortress dating back to 1071, famously situated high above the river - indeed the name Richmond is derived from 'Riche-mont' meaning 'strong hill'. Today there are wonderful walks to be enjoyed such as the Castle Walk - a dramatic terrace walk beneath the castle walls - or alternatively walk alongside the River Swale where there are parks, safe paddling areas and small waterfalls to enjoy. Within the town, narrow streets and alleys radiate from the cobbled Market Place (which has a weekly market and monthly farmers’ market) and there are numerous shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy. The town flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries and the resulting elegant Georgian architecture lines many of the old streets. The Georgian Theatre is one of the oldest surviving theatres in the country with visitors enjoying its regular productions all year round.
