Lots of walks around the river Swale from the doorstep with the rest of the Dales a short drive. We had a winter family break for 3 couples here and will probably do the same again next year.

The Orangery was great for us all to be seated comfortably, we didn’t use the front room at all. The bedrooms were spacious and the beds really comfy. We had everything we needed and the hot tub was a bonus. Richmond was really nice, the walk up the hill would be a challenge for a lot of people but taxis are available. Will definitely return.

  • "This property was very misleading."

It was very grubby, with no complementary toiletries in any of the bathrooms, not enough towels, the dishwasher broken, The fridge never seemed cold, only two toilet rolls provided for 9 people!! cobwebs/spiders everywhere. None of the windows in the property open. This in itself is a huge fire risk due to the way the property is laid out - the kitchen is in the middle of the house so no fire escape at all. We had to prop the front door open and the back door to let some airflow in. It gets so hot and stuffy - something to be mindful of - no fresh air at all in the property. The fixtures/fittings are broken. Wifi terrible, no access to Netflix etc as the signal isn't great. The hot tub was dirty - not cleaned by the looks. The BBQ was tiny for the size of the house and it looks like it's seen better days! No bottle banks so had to go recycle them at the nearby supermarket - something you shouldn't be doing on your holiday! Overall the area was beautiful, I would not be staying here again, unfortunately. Emma - lovely host - but very let down by the price we paid for the condition it was in.

The cottage is well equipped and a lovely space for a group holiday. The owners are very accessible and helpful, checking the jacuzzi levels during the week and even bringing us a board game to play and leaving some fizz in the fridge. There's a lovely log fire, conservatory space and cosy living room. The jacuzzi is a brilliant addition. The cottage is perfectly located for walks along the river, up into Richmond or driving to local attractions. There are so many restaurants, shops and pubs in town. Parking is fairly easy with a pass for the high street. Sometimes you can't park right outside the cottage but you are never far away. We would absolutely recommend this place for a beautiful Yorkshire getaway.

  • "The hosts were extremely clear in their instructions for the property, including a phone call to check on how we would like the beds to be configured before arrival."

The kitchen was well equipped, the beds were comfy, and the hot tub was appreciated by all. Although the spacious dining/sitting area was a little cool, the sitting room was really cosy and the wood burning fire easy to light. When the oven died (due to nobody’s fault), we particularly appreciated the speed of its emergency replacement ON CHRISTMAS EVE, above and beyond anything we could have expected. Far enough from the centre, there were great walks from the front door and all the amenities for eating and drinking up the hill in Richmond itself. A great break.

The rooms were well equiped with soft furnishings and the bedrooms and lounge were lovely and cool, very welcome as the weather was really hot. My Daughter in Law was adamant she wanted a Hot Tub and the one at the property was great and proved very popular in the evenings with everyone. The location was ideal, close to the Swale and only a short (uphill) walk to the town centre and castle. ). I really like the mix of 'old-building' stonework and 'on-trend' modern decor: no chintz, no doilies, no 'nick-nacks' to worry about breaking! The main living space is large with lots of comfy seating - I think you could have a sofa each, even a party of 6! - and there's a separate living room if a large group wants to do or watch separate things. Big fridge and big dishwasher: both very helpful! Bedrooms are all a good size with wardrobes or hanging space. Strong shower jet in the main bathroom, and lots of hot water: much appreciated after a long walk on a chilly hill! The location is perfect for exploring Richmond itself and then Swaledale beyond.

The tree in the lounge looked lovely and all the christmas decorations made the cottage even more homely. There was enough seating for all of us to sit around the table for christmas lunch and the owners had even provided a festive tablecloth. The beds were really comfortable and the shower powerful. The kitchen had everything we wanted, even a slow cooker which really came in useful. Just one little suggestion, the bin in the kitchen was not user friendly. I think a large bin with a foot pedal would be more appropriate. I cannot recommend this cottage highly enough. Richmond Town is on the doorstep and it was an added bonus to be able to park the cars and just walk everywhere. A bit thank you to the owner's husband who popped in to clean the hot tub, and was just in time to take a photo for us. I hope we didn't embarass you dressed in our Christmas pyjamas! We look forward to staying here again. Mrs Jackson

Emma went above all our expectations, with her friendly, caring manner, also in providing toys and a swim float for our young, toddler grandson, .This was a great start to our mini break! We were exceptionally pleased with the cottage, which looked just like the pictures. It was very clean, with abundant supply of towels, glasses and kitchenware. This was great and meant the six adults could have a three course meal and have plenty of plates, dishes, etc. There was also enough places at the table and on the sofas in the two living areas, for us all to sit together, which isn't always the case in three bedroomed cottages, we have found. Emma popped in to see us to show us how things worked in the cottage and came to the rescue again with spare clothes for our grandson, who had been ill when we arrived. • "I booked The Old Sunday School to celebrate my partners 40th Birthday as a surprise."

The owner went out of her way to help with the surprise which was very kind. It is a gorgeous property with lots of space, lovely bedrooms and in an ideal location for exploring Richmond. It was also very clean. We had a lovely hamper on arrival which was a lovely touch. I would highly recommend staying here and if we ever visit Richmond again we would stay here again. Thank you for helping make this weekend very special.

  • "Loved this property, and it is in a great location."

Owner went out of her way to make us welcome, from the unexpected food hamper to the excess of towels for shower and hot tub, which we really appreciated. The property itself is quirky, well equipped and very comfortable, especially the beds with their cotton sheets and soft pillows. We will definitely be back.

  • "Our accommodation was even more fabulous than the pictures and descriptions."

Beautiful. Clean. Cared for with a lot of time put into the small details that make a place really special. I had booked it as a celebration for a friend from America and she was blow away with how special it was. The Hosts were fabulous, friendly and welcoming. They met us as the property and gave a great tour of the accommodation and Richmond itself. The location is walkable into Richmond. I can't recommend this property and the hosts enough - I would most certainly go back there

About the location

RICHMOND

Barnard Castle 10 miles; Leyburn 12 miles.

Situated at the entrance to Swaledale, the ancient market town of Richmond stands on a prominent hilltop site to the north of the River Swale. Its cobbled streets and narrow alleys or 'wynds' enshrine over nine centuries of busy history and unique character. The town grew up around its castle, a Norman fortress dating back to 1071, famously situated high above the river - indeed the name Richmond is derived from 'Riche-mont' meaning 'strong hill'. Today there are wonderful walks to be enjoyed such as the Castle Walk - a dramatic terrace walk beneath the castle walls - or alternatively walk alongside the River Swale where there are parks, safe paddling areas and small waterfalls to enjoy. Within the town, narrow streets and alleys radiate from the cobbled Market Place (which has a weekly market and monthly farmers’ market) and there are numerous shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy. The town flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries and the resulting elegant Georgian architecture lines many of the old streets. The Georgian Theatre is one of the oldest surviving theatres in the country with visitors enjoying its regular productions all year round.
