  • "WOW!! Best cottage we have ever stayed in (of which there are many)"

. Cottage was extremely clean, comfortable and warm - so warm that we had to forgo the use of the log burner which we were looking forward to using. Location is excellent for cycling and walking - though be warned - one of the walks involves climbing up 325 steps from the river back up to the village, which can be extremely hard work! Welcome pack was really lovely , and extremely thoughtful. Husband's eyes lit up at the home made scones (delicious!) - and biscuits (which are normally restricted at home) and the addition of bread, milk, butter, jam and cream for the scones, and a selection of beverages was way beyond the norm. The owner (Vicky) has obviously gone to a lot of trouble to make sure we enjoyed our stay - which is very much appreciated.

Thank you so much for your lovely feedback it is very much appreciated. hope you are able to visit again. Vicky Property Owner

The cottage is quirky, spotlessly clean with excellent furnishings and everything you could possible need to accommodate your stay. Also the welcome pack was excellent we did not expect the biscuit's, bread milk and butter which is very thoughtful as some providers fail to produce the basics. Little touches throughout the cottage such as night creams, disposable slippers and hand creams were also very thoughtful. We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend and the people of Hudswell are very welcoming. We received exceptional service in the George & Dragon were we sampled lots of the different cask and keg ales and also the food. Thank you Vicky keep doing what you are doing you have got it right.

Furnishings are to a high standard and Vicky has a good eye for detail with some lovely finishing touches. We found the cottage very comfortable and well-equipped with everything we needed. The bed is quite firm which isn't to everyone's liking, but we've taken to travelling with a mattress topper which meant it wasn't a problem. The shower was wonderful. Welcome groceries and information folders were very useful. The outside space is compact but nicely appointed. Parking was easy. Hudswell is a very friendly village with a community owned pub and shop, The George and Dragon and The Little Shop. We had an evening meal at the pub which was very tasty and reasonably priced. We discovered our new favourite beer, Rudgate Ruby Mild. The Little Shop has fresh bread daily and fresh baked goods on Wednesdays and Fridays which sell out quickly. There are several walks from the village detailed in a handy local guide. We had a lovely stay in the Blacksmith's Cottage and would happily stay again.

About the location

HUDSWELL

Richmond 2 miles.

Hudswell is a small ribbon village sitting on top of the valley above the River Swale, located just two miles from its better-known neighbour of Richmond in Swaledale. Set in delightful rolling countryside, the village boasts a mixture of lovely old houses, and a most interesting local pub, the George and Dragon. Like many village pubs, it recently fell on difficult times, so the villagers clubbed together and now run it as a 'Community Pub Initiative'. The ancient market town of Richmond stands to the north of the River Swale. Its cobbled streets and narrow alleys embody nine centuries of history and unique character. The town grew up around its castle. Today there are wonderful walks to be enjoyed by the castle or alongside the River Swale where there are parks, safe paddling areas and small waterfalls. Narrow streets and alleys radiate from the cobbled Market Place (which has a weekly market and monthly farmers' market) and there are numerous shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy.
