  • "We have stayed at Curlew Cottage several times and always find it to be to the same high standards of cleanliness and comfort."

Heating is generous in colder weather. It is small but extremely well thought out and easy to get around. It is in a quiet, pretty location and is an ideal base for walking, bird watching or general sight seeing. Swaledale is close by and Barnard Castle, a friendly little town is a 5min drive away.

We had a pleasant and comfortable stay in Curlew Cottage and the owner, Rob, did everything he could to make our stay a good one. Several adjustments were made to accommodate our limited mobility. A lovely welcome basket, wine, fresh flowers and an anniversary card awaited us, which was a really thoughtful touch. The kitchen equipment was modern and good quality, the beds were comfortable and there were plenty of DVDs, books and guides. A highlight was the colourful and well designed gardens and pond area with lovely open meadow views. Rob’s late wifeVal and their grandson Max created the gardens with love and imagination. A bonus was speaking with Rob who is knowledgeable about the area and it’s history. The cottage is only a few miles from the fascinating Bowes Museum with lovely gardens and a good cafe and about 15 mins from Raby Castle with beautiful walks in the grounds. We would be happy to return if we visited this area again.

About the location

BARNARD CASTLE

Staindrop 6 miles; Richmond 13 miles; Darlington 16 miles; Durham 20 miles.

The market town of Barnard Castle is situated in the unspoilt countryside of Teesdale in County Durham. It stands on the site of an ancient Roman fort which crosses the river. The medieval ruins of the castle still tower over the river and are well worth a visit. Known affectionately as 'Barney’ by residents and visitors alike, the town boasts cobble streets, yards and back lanes, which were first laid out in the 12th century. The nearby Bowes Museum is well worth a visit and a wonderful way to spend a day wandering around this beautiful building and experiencing the fascinating exhibitions. Beautiful walking country is right on the doorstep of this lovely market town, with woodland walks and cycle routes and the Lake District, the Pennine and Teesdale Ways, and the River Tees and magnificent waterfalls at High Force are all within easy reach.
