"Back after 19 years and it's just as wonderful as we remember."
What an absolute gem, beautiful location that's super convenient for getting to Barnard Castle town and surrounding areas. Our car journey up was challenging, so walking into a lovely warm, comfy and clean cottage with an amazingly generous welcome basket and milk in the fridge for a cuppa was just perfect. Really couldn't have wanted for more. Great selection of movies to pop on the DVD player and board games to pass time in the peaceful evenings. Beds are very comfortable, and paired with the quiet location, we all slept like logs! Thank you so much for having us, we'll be back sooner this time!
-

"We have stayed at this cottage three times in the last twelve months so that probably says it all."
Perfect cottage for us in all respects. Many thanks to the owner Rob and look forward to staying again soon.
-
"Lovely cottage."
Very clean and comfortable. My only criticism is that (at 6'3") I had difficulty fitting in the short bath and not enough head room to stand up to use the shower. There appears to be plenty of room for a longer bath. Would definitely return all the same.
-
"Nice cottage."
-
"The cottage was very nicely presented."
There was a very nice surprise of items on our arrival including milk in the fridge, home made jam, and fresh flowers in the lounge. And in a lovely quiet location overlooking the countryside.
-

The atmosphere was very warm and welcoming we loved it. Even when the weather was bad there was enough entertainment that the cottage provides.
-
"A lovely warm cottage ideal for those winter days after you hav been out walking to return to it cosy and warm."
It has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The owners contacted is before our stay to make sure that we had all the information we needed with directors and how to get access to the property. There is an extensive library of things to do in the area which was very helpful.
-
"Lovely warm, cosy cottage which had everything we needed for a very comfortable stay."
The stove in the lounge was a bonus. Well located to access walks, cycle trails and castles in the local area. Would 100% recommend.
-
"Absolutely fantastic cottage!"
Very cosy, lovely welcome hamper including shortbread and bottle of prosecco! Perfectly located with easy access to Barnard Castle and the countryside on your doorstep. Hosts lovely. Only negative was I was hoping to do some work during the stay but the WiFi wasn't up to it unfortunately.
-

"The Stone Byre was everything, and more, than we expected."
The cottage was beautifully appointed and decorated with absolutely everything we needed for a restful time away. It was wonderfully warm and comfortable with the owner on hand to answer questions, if required, but never intrusive. Great position for exploring the many areas of interest locally with an abundance of fantastic walks. This property is an absolute gem...we loved it! Thank you for the opportunity to have such a special time.
-

Peace and tranquility come as standard. The owners live next door and are there if you should need them, otherwise you are left to enjoy your holiday. You will want to return, we have done!

-
"A lovely cottage with everything one could wish for."
We will certainly make return visits.
-
"A warm, welcoming gem of a cottage in a lovely location."
The photos do not reflect the spaciousness of the property, which far exceeded our expectations. Not only did the generous owner provide a fabulous hamper, but also plenty of supplies, maps, local information, dvds, books etc. We certainly hope to return, preferably in a warmer season, when we can enjoy the outside space.
-
"First time at this cottage and it won’t be the last."
Had a lovely relaxing stay. Cottage well maintained and clean. Great welcome basket too. Thank you !
-
"The Stone Byre was a lovely clean warm cottage."
We have stayed with Sykes a number of times and this is one of the best we've stayed at.
-
"A home from home."
Equipped with everything you might need and a lovely welcome hamper awaits you. Get the burner lit on a cool autumn day and settle in for a cosy evening, perfect! Amazing cottage in lovely and tranquil setting. Owners were lovely and have thought of everything. Thank you.

A beautiful, clean and cosy cottage in unspoilt countryside. Just the place to get away from the madding crowds!
-

Really felt like home.
-
"A big thank you to Rob who made sure that we were well provided for."
The cottage was lovely and well equipped. We would certainly recommend booking this cottage especially if you enjoy a rural setting not too far away from the lovely town of Barnard Castle.
-
"This must be one of the best holiday property I have ever booked."
. It really could never be improved as it is quite perfect. We were so comfortable there and I believe the sense of peace that we felt in the house was beneficial to us. The owner was so kind and very helpful We do hope to return.
-
"Very cosy and comfortable cottage which suited our needs during the short stay."
-
"We had a superb stay at The Stone Bryce cottage."
We were welcomed by a lovely hamper on the kitchen table. The cottage itself is beautifully decorated and spacious. And the view was stunning. The beds were comfy and the bathroom was a good size. Thank you again for a relaxing stay. We will definitely return in the future!
-
"Fabulous cottage, the photos really don’t do it justice!"
All the amenities you could possibly want, lovely welcome basket on arrival as well with tea coffee etc! We really enjoyed our stay, perfect base for exploring Barnard Castle
-
"The Stone Byre is a lovely property with everything you need."
We had a very enjoyable stay and it was quite cool in the cottage despite the unprecedented heatwave. The owner was very nice and available should we need anything. Would highly recommend as such a peaceful location. Thank you very much.
-
"A beautiful cottage in a part of the country we had never explored before."
Both far exceeded our expectations and we will return to both the cottage and area.
-
"Our 3rd stay here and would recommend this cottage."
it is warm, comfortable and spotlessly clean. Just the place to relax.
-
"A warm welcome awaits you at The Stone Byre."
The cottage is clean, cosy & comfortable. It is well equipped & a small welcome hamper provides a few essentials. The rural location means you have lovely countryside views, but is still only a few minutes drive from Barnard Castle. The cottage has a sheltered patio area looking onto fields & is quiet & private. Secure parking is available at the cottage & is easily accessible. A great base from which to visit the many local attractions.
-
"It was a really lovely cottage."
Nice to arrive into to an already warm cottage. The furniture and fittings in the cottage were first rate - one of the very nicest cottages we have ever been to. The hosts were very friendly and left a nice basket of biscuits and home made jam in the welcome pack. We loved the fact that there was farmland just outside the door. The sound of Curlews calling around the cottage from dawn until dusk was wonderful. Our only slight criticism of the cottage was there was no shower only a small bath.
-
"Spotlessly clean, warm and cosy cottage with lots of personal touches including a lovely welcome basket and lots of information about the local area."
-
"The Stone Byrd was one of the best cottages we have stayed in, the sort of place we could have made home."
-
"We were absolutely delighted with the Stone Byre and Dr Pearson."
An exceptional amount of thought and care had gone into every aspect of the cottage. We could’ve stayed for ever and long to return.
-
"An excellent conversion to good quality living accommodation which caters adequately up to 4 people."
Clean and warm accommodation, good furniture, excellent kitchen with facilities with a very generous welcome pack. Lovely quiet location with good access road, providing secluded parking spaces, nice front patioed garden overlooking paddock area, with a nearby gated garden with resident friendly duck. A varied selection of DVDs for films and a good selection of books and guides regarding the area. Thanks to the owners for use of the accommodation and would recommend.
-
"Lovely cottage in a beautiful setting."
Clean and comfortable with a lovely welcome basket. The emails from the owners and the visitor book provided all the information we needed. We really enjoyed our stay.
-
"This is a total gem, a lovely cottage, well equipped, spacious, with beautiful views over fields of sheep and within easy reach of lots of attraction."
Everything was spotless, nice quality plates, pans, bedding etc. Plenty of guides, maps, information about the local area. The only surprise was that there wasn't a shower head in the bathroom, only a bath - that was a new experience for our 21 year old who is used to jumping into the shower in the morning; for us his parents it was more of a trip down memory lane. We really loved staying there, it was absolutely wonderful.
-
"We had a lovely restful break and were very lucky with the weather."
There was a lovely welcome box with homemade jam which we enjoyed all week. This cosy cottage was very clean, well decorated and well equipped. Plenty of guides, maps and information about the local area. The only downside was there was only a bath which very short, so not for tall people!
-
"Immaculately clean, well furnished and homely."
We didn't want to go home it felt so comfortable. All areas were well equipped and the welcome basket on arrival was a thoughtful touch. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a peaceful break.
-
"Lovely cottage, extremely well presented and equipped."
Spotlessly clean and warm. Excellent location, so much to see and do we didn't have time in one week so have already booked to return in spring. Lovely owners, we would recommend this cottage.
-
"The cottage was excellent and the owner Val and Rob were great."
..the cottage had everything, very clean and great views, would definitely stay here again, the owners were very helpful. Fantastic cottage
-
"Lovely location."
Owners very welcoming. Lots to do in the area and the Kynren event at Bishop Auckland was spectacular.
-
"Excellent best accommodation ever could not fault."
-
"We had a lovely, relaxing stay at The Stone Byre, made even more enjoyable by the welcome we received from Valerie and Robert, who made us feel like old friends."
The cottage was extremely comfortable with all we could have needed to make us feel at home, as well as a 'welcome basket' full of goodies - and a bottle of Prosecco in the fridge! The views were stunning, looking out across fields filled with sheep and lambs, and we were very lucky with glorious, sunny weather. We will definitely recommend The Stone Byre to friends and family in future, and would stay there again without hesitation.
-

Great cottage well stocked with comforts and good hospitality I would certainly visit this place again Look forward to future visits You do not need to take anything with you all the equipment is of a high quality and standard so just sit back and enjoy the facilities
-
"The Stone Byre was amazing."
Its facilities, surroundings, views and peace and quiet were exceptional. Thanks to Val and Rob for sharing such a beautiful place.
-
"The Stone Byre is a well appointed and comfortable cottage in beautiful and quiet surroundings."
The owners are most welcoming but did not intrude at all and provided us with undoubtedly the best complimentary hamper we’ve ever had (again)! Many thanks to Mr & Mrs Pearson once again and we have no hesitation in recommending this cottage to others.
-
"The cottage was lovely and clean and well equipped."
It was very quiet with lovely views . The owners stayed next door and they were very friendly and helpful. There was a lovely welcome basket with essentials, coffee, tea, bisc etc including a bottle of prosecco.
-
"A most comfortable cottage."
The owners have thought of everything- a very generous welcome pack and a very tasteful, well- equipped house. Valerie and Robert are perfect hosts. We will go back as much to see and do in area.
-
"We have just spent a week here and I tried to think of some way to make it better but I failed."
Every thing was just perfect and we felt at home straight away. We have stayed in many 4 star hotels that are not as good as the Stone Byre. Many thanks
-
"The area we visited was great ."
We have stayed in many of sykescottages but this was certainly the best all round and a credit to the owners who were very helpful and oblgeing.
-
"We had a wonderful stay at Stone Byre from our warm welcome and cottage tour from Valerie to the day we sadly departed."
The view of the fields with the sheep was particularly enjoyed from the bed. The cottage was warm, cosy and very clean. There was a lovely welcome basket in the very well equipped kitchen and in the lounge many books about the area and a varied selection of DVDs for young and old. The one very minor problem we had was immediately rectified. It would have been great to sit outside in the garden area but alas it was a bit cold at the end of October - perhaps we will return at a warmer time of year.
-
"This cottage exceeded all expectations."
On arrival there was a welcome box containing goodies including a bottle of sparkling wine, tea, coffee, sugar and biscuits. A container of fresh milk was in the fridge. The kitchen had a full size fridge / freezer and dishwasher; there was also a washing machine. Towels were provided for each person and the bedding was spotlessly clean, all of the highest standard. The beds were amazingly comfortable. Loo rolls, washing up liquid etc were all provided. The cottage was lovely and warm and we were able to adjust the heating as required. Fuel for the multi stove was provided although we only used it once as the heating system was so efficient. There was no 'walk-in' shower in the bathroom due to the size and level of the roof, however the water was plentiful and hot and there was a very powerful hand-held shower over the bath which was more than adequate. We didn't find this was an issue. We would highly recommend this cottage, you will not be disappointed.
-
"Beautiful peaceful cottage with everything you could need and more."
Lovely welcome touches. This is the cleanest cottage we have ever been in . Its quiet location is wonderful but only 5 minutes drive from barnard castle and other places of interest not too far away either.
-
"What lovely little cottage, in lovely setting with great views."
Cottage it self had plenty of room and was very comfortable and cozy, had everything there. we loved our time at the cottage and would of happily stayed there longer, and will definitely go back there.
-
"Perfect cottage just a couple of miles from Barnard Castle."
Very peaceful and the owners were extremely welcoming and helpful. We will definitely be back.
-
"Beautiful cottage, exceptionally clean, and well equipped the bed is so comfortable!"
The cottage is exactly as described and the owners are so welcoming and friendly nothing is too much trouble. Location is fantastic for visiting surrounding areas. This is the best cottage I have stayed in and will definitely return. Overall a credit to the owners would very highly recommend.
-
"A charming cottage with many delightful touches in a quiet rural situation with an outlook over open grass fields grazed by sheep (not forgetting the odd Curlew !"
), yet only a couple of miles from Barnard Castle. Although the cottage is attached to the main house, it has a private west facing patio which gets the sun for a large part of the day. The owners have obviously put considerable thought into ensuring that the cottage is well set up with everything that one could possibly want. There was a welcome pack on arrival which was also much appreciated. An excellent base from which to explore the surrounding are. My wife and I had an idyllic week there and we would heartily recommend it.
-
"The cottage was perfect - so pretty, comfortable, well- equipped."
The owners were helpful but unobtrusive, the welcome pack an unexpected bonus! We will be returning
-
"A lovely, cosy cottage in a great location."
Thank you for a wonderful break!
-
"One of two properties attached to the owners house."
Lovely owners on hand but not intrusive. Excellent welcome pack and welcome on arrival. Lovely well thought out and equipped cottage. Recently refurbished kitchen much improved from the pictures on the advert. Spotlessly clean with nothing missing that you might need - just add yourselves good and clothes!! Quiet but in easy reach of lots to do what ever the weather. The only thing that might be a negative for some is the shower is over the bath but due to the roof you can't stand up and shower in it unless you aren't very tall but we weren't too troubled by this as it was an excellent shower it's self. Thank you. We loved it and would certainly recommend to others.
-
"First class cottage."
As advertised. Friendly helpful owners.
-

Known affectionately as 'Barney’ by residents and visitors alike, the town boasts cobble streets, yards and back lanes, which were first laid out in the 12th century. The nearby Bowes Museum is well worth a visit and a wonderful way to spend a day wandering around this beautiful building and experiencing the fascinating exhibitions.
