The position of the mill was beautiful and so tranquil. There was everything we needed, could not fault it.

Our children loved the garden and it was a great base for exploring the area. Very much appreciated the welcome from Libby and the delicious brownies-we’d love to come back!

  • "Alwent Mill is a lovely cottage with everything you need for your stay, it was beautiful."

We were welcomed at the door when arriving and even though it was raining we still stood at talked about the attractions and things happening within the area that week. Although we had every weather you could think of in one week we still thoroughly enjoyed the whole week. Thank you Libby for checking to make sure we were OK through the week as weather was so bad there

  • "We were warmly welcomed, with wine and home made tray bake and immediately felt the calm and beauty of the property."

Alwent Mill is in an idyllic setting, in a large informal garden bordered by a river. It was an ideal place for us to be reunited with our family after 9 months of lock-downs as the cottage had outdoor furniture, children's well-loved outdoor equipment and outdoor space, with a barbecue. We found lots of interesting places to visit, even with some Coronavirus restrictions still in place and we enjoyed our first coffee in the outdoor cafe at Raby Castle after discovering the walled gardens there. Every drive out rewarded us with stunning views and quiet; such an undiscovered landscape. The cottage itself was thoughtfully furnished, with all the kitchen equipment needed, a decent sized bathroom and comfortable bed. We will be returning!

The cottage was very comfortable and clean, the owner Libby was very friendly and although the cottage was next to her home she was not intrusive. The location was ideal with plenty of places to visit and see. The gardens of the property are lovely with a stream at the bottom of the garden. • "The cottage patio had lovely views of the garden and the beds where very comfortable."

The shower was very small with a high step in, there was a small ice box in very, very tiny fridge. Unusual having a wardrobe in the living room as a cleaning storage unit. Not sure why I picked this cottage as normally we like modern cottages!!!

  • "The three nights that we recently spent in the cottage at Alwent Mill were a joy."

The cottage was really clean, tastefully furnished and thoughtfully equipped - but it was the spacious, rural setting of the cottage that we particularly enjoyed. Our visits in the area included the stunning Raby Castle nearby, Durham and Newcastle. The owners of the cottage, who lived next door, we're welcoming but unobtrusive. Thank you to them and to you, Sykes Cottages, for having such a cottage on your books. We hope very much to stay there again.

If peace, quiet and tranquility are what you need, then this is the perfect place. There are many places of interest to visit as well as good food to eat........... if you do not wish to cook. We ate out every day. It is a perfect place to stay whatever your age and the owners were so helpful and kind...... and we are in our seventies. Sue and Harold

About the location

STAINDROP

Barnard Castle 5 miles; Durham 20 miles.

The pretty Teesdale village of Staindrop has always been closely associated with the fortunes of nearby Raby Castle and its owners. The Castle (open to the public) is one of the most grand in England. Enlarged and beautified over the centuries, the medieval heart remains and a walled garden and 200 acre deer park add to the splendour. Staindrop has many interesting shops, pubs and cafes set round its long village green. The popular market town of Barnard Castle is 5 miles away, with its castle, the Bowes Museum, plus of course its wide range of shops and tea rooms. Walkers will enjoy the many walks around Teesdale.
