Peaceful, beautiful surroundings in the owners grounds. Owners non obtrusive & welcoming. Beds comfy. Great location for visits to Barnard's Castle, Richmond, Bishops Auckland where we saw the fabulous Kynren show, High Force etc. Owners left some great information about everything in the area to visit. We relaxed, enjoyed the area & the property & will visit again. I have some mobility issues & found the property safe & reassuring being all on one level.

Everything was just perfect for us, lovely clean cottage and everything that you could want was with-in the Cottage. Lots of very nice places to visit and all with-in easy driving distances. Lovey country side with great views. Mr & Mrs Hampson the owners of Alwent Mill Cottage live next door so are on hand if they are required but you don’t really see them, you are left alone to enjoy your break. We had a wonderful experience staying at Alwent Mill Cottage.

  • "The cottage is lovely, with access to the owner's surrounding gardens and a real sense of calm and isolation from the world around."

Owners were very welcoming, present enough to be helpful but not so that we were particularly aware of them most of the time. There is a lot to do locally, but we found ourselves happy for much of the time to be relaxing in and around the cottage itself. Planning to go again.

  • "A lovely location - we enjoyed walking around the grounds."

The location was brilliant for Upper Force waterfalls , Raby Castle and the Bowles museum. We also visited Whitby Abbey. The entrance could do with some signage that you can see from the road - we were looking for the mill stone that's on the website. We also struggled locking up as all the locks were badly fitted (we obviously weren't the only ones as one of the keys was bent!). However we loved waiting up to rabbits on the lawn! A lovely location that I would recommend.

We were welcomed at the door when arriving and even though it was raining we still stood at talked about the attractions and things happening within the area that week. Although we had every weather you could think of in one week we still thoroughly enjoyed the whole week. Thank you Libby for checking to make sure we were OK through the week as weather was so bad there

  • "We were warmly welcomed, with wine and home made tray bake and immediately felt the calm and beauty of the property."

Alwent Mill is in an idyllic setting, in a large informal garden bordered by a river. It was an ideal place for us to be reunited with our family after 9 months of lock-downs as the cottage had outdoor furniture, children's well-loved outdoor equipment and outdoor space, with a barbecue. We found lots of interesting places to visit, even with some Coronavirus restrictions still in place and we enjoyed our first coffee in the outdoor cafe at Raby Castle after discovering the walled gardens there. Every drive out rewarded us with stunning views and quiet; such an undiscovered landscape. The cottage itself was thoughtfully furnished, with all the kitchen equipment needed, a decent sized bathroom and comfortable bed. We will be returning!

The cottage was really clean, tastefully furnished and thoughtfully equipped - but it was the spacious, rural setting of the cottage that we particularly enjoyed. Our visits in the area included the stunning Raby Castle nearby, Durham and Newcastle. The owners of the cottage, who lived next door, we're welcoming but unobtrusive. About the location

STAINDROP

Barnard Castle 5 miles; Durham 20 miles.

The pretty Teesdale village of Staindrop has always been closely associated with the fortunes of nearby Raby Castle and its owners. The Castle (open to the public) is one of the most grand in England. Enlarged and beautified over the centuries, the medieval heart remains and a walled garden and 200 acre deer park add to the splendour. Staindrop has many interesting shops, pubs and cafes set round its long village green. The popular market town of Barnard Castle is 5 miles away, with its castle, the Bowes Museum, plus of course its wide range of shops and tea rooms. Walkers will enjoy the many walks around Teesdale.
