  • "Just returned from the most wonderful stay at this cottage."

Warm and cosy with the beautiful log fire but plenty of space for the family with its well equipped large kitchen diner. Sitting round the table with a hearty meal taking in the breath taking views of the farm. We could not have been made more welcome by the adjoining owners making our little boy's holiday with horse rides...a lovely unique stay on a working farm in a beautiful property we will be back!

  • "A lovely comfortable cottage with a beautiful peaceful setting."

We had a great welcome, and the owners were hand if necessary. We really enjoyed being on a working farm. The area is really beautiful with lots of walks and interesting places to visit. We had a lovely time, trouble is it went to quickly.

  • "I'm not sure I should give feedback because then everyone will want to stay!"

I have been staying in Swaledale since 2009 and this is the most beautiful cottage I have stayed in via Sykes. So let me give a balanced review: The cottage was exceptionally clean but there was no instructions folder - didn't need it as Helen was right next door and immediately available for any questions! Location: stunning views, remote location - access could be tricky if a low level vehicle as down as gravelled track but unless you drive a low slung sports car, it isn't an issue! Yes it is remote but it is on a working farm so you have the 'company' of the comings and goings plus the gorgeous sheepdogs plus Plenty and Henry (to little dogs) as well as 2 horses in the stable opposite. I would highly recommend making sure you have a bag of carrots and dog treats if you want to make extra friends! The comings and goings of farm life is not intrusive by the way, I found it comforting as I was on my own. The cottage is very well stocked with everything you need and if something is missing, a simple knock on the owner's door and all sorted! I stayed for 2 weeks and was offered a change of bed linen half way. Would I stay here again? Without a doubt. Only one VERY small tiny thing - no welcome pack which is a nice gesture but then, this is self-catering so you should be catering for yourself! Thank you for a wonderful stay.

  • "Shepherd's Lodge has everything one could wish for."

Beautiful location, comfortable beds, cosy sitting room. well appointed kitchen. Unfortunately there was no bracket on the wall by the bath to hang the shower head so taking a shower became a bit of a "water ballet" having to hold it above one's head. Shepherd's Lodge is part of a working farm and thus there are "sounds" early in the day but that has a certain charm about it. We navigated to the lodge on the postal code and ended up in the hamlet of Whaw. A gentleman approached us with a smile on his face and when I showed him the postal code he told us that there are 4 farms in the area with the same code and proceeded to give us instructions. Looking back at the confirmation of the booking, those instructions are given so my advice is to follow them (unless you want to end up in Whaw). One bit of advice. Being a self catering apartment it is only logical that you stock up on food and drink and for that a supermarket comes in handy. Any reasonably sized super is around 15 km from the lodge so it is best to shop on your way to the lodge or make a round trip of around 30 km as we did after settling in. The surrounding area is full of interesting things to see and do and was a bit of a "homecoming" for me (Piet) as I was born in Yorkshire. In one of the previous reviews I saw that someone "complained" the was no "welcome pack". Strange because there was a bottle of (red) wine sat on the sable when we arrived. With it not being the time of the year for red wine, I told Helen I would take it home with me to toast on my 80th birthday on the 4th of July which I did (and a very pleasant wine it was).

Really enjoyed the location on the farm and the fantastic view of the hillside from the dining room. Would highly recommend if you like to get away from it all.

The area is great for hiking, some paths starting directly from the farm. We hope to come back, although it's a long drive from Germany.

  • "Such a lovely warm welcome awaited us at our beautiful cottage which was everything we could wish for."

Spotlessly clean, extremely comfortable, tastefully furnished and decorated and well equipped to meet all needs. We particularly loved being able to relax and enjoy watching the wildlife in the surrounding fields and moorland yet appreciating the hard work undertaken daily on the farm by every member of our host family. Loved seeing all the animals at close quarters and were totally spoilt by having the extra treat of being able to give some TLC to Floss and her beautiful sheepdog puppies. Thank you Helen, Roger and family for a wonderful memorable holiday at Shepherd’s Lodge.

  • "We received a very warm welcome from the owner, Helen, who was also very helpful in advising us of places to visit."

My mother had stayed in Arkengarthdale during the war and wanted to revisit the area but was unsure of her bearings, but Helen went out of her way in order to help. The cottage was warm, comfortable and very relaxing. It is ideally placed for those keen on walking but is also close to the towns of Barnard Castle and Hawes for sightseeing. We had a really lovely holiday and would certainly book again in the future.

About the location

REETH

Leyburn 8 miles; Richmond 11 miles; Barnard Castle 15 miles; Kirkby Stephen 22 miles.

The pretty, ever-popular village of Reeth rests at the northern tip of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, where Arkengarthdale and Swaledale meet, nestled between Calver Hill, Fremington Edge and Harkerside. An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with lovely rolling hills and spectacular views, Reeth boasts a colourful history as it was originally a Saxon settlement, and has also been known as a lead mining town and a centre for hand knitting throughout its time. Both trades are proudly featured in the Swaledale Museum, located alongside a good range of shops, tea rooms and restaurants. For a quaint little community, Reeth is well-served by traditional inns, with three to choose from, including the lovely Buck Hotel, whitewashed like so many of the 18th century cottages huddled around the triangular village green. The historic market towns of Richmond and Leyburn are also within easy reach, offering a further selection of amenities. Askrigg is just a short drive away, as well as Aysgarth Falls, Semerwater and Hardraw Force (England's highest single drop waterfall at 99ft). Reeth offers a fantastic base for exploring North Yorkshire's beautiful, sweeping countryside, whether you choose to discover the caves, cliffs, waterfalls or the plethora of walking and cycling routes that circle this vibrant and varied landscape.
