It was very comfortable, clean, homely and well equipped. The information pack that awaited us was really helpful to us in finding the nearest supermarket, pub/restaurants etc. The location of the cottage in a small village in such a beautiful part of the country is well worth a visit.

The cottage was delightful. It was cosy and practical. The sofa was comfy as was the bed and pillows. The sun in the courtyard of a morning was a delight to see. The cottage is in an excellent location for those wishing to escape from the noise of traffic. We very much enjoyed our stay and will be returning next year.

  • "Beautifully presented, well equipped character cottage set in a peaceful location, the ideal spot for a relaxed break for two."

Cottage is spotlessly clean, comfortable and well equipped with the added bonus of a very private walled rear garden (just lacks more comfortable seating!) Located in a very peaceful setting in the village of Ovington, with a great local pub just across the road. Hosts were friendly and welcoming and offered lots of ideas on where to walk locally. Recommend without hesitation and we sincerely hope to return again some time soon.

It has everything you want and spotlessly clean . There was a welcome pack and fresh flowers on the table , we will definitely return. The Four Alls pub in the village does excellent food and Dave the landlord is very friendly.

  • "Cosy cottage in a very pretty and quiet village."

The cottage has everything you need with high quality kitchen equipment and furniture. Spotlessly clean. The hosts were very nice. One of the storage heaters didn't work, Ian, the host, fixed it promptly. The welcome goodies were very much appreciated. Nice private courtyard at the back. We didn't try the pub in the village but was told it was very welcoming. Nice walks from the cottage. Close to Barnard Castle and Richmond both worth checking out. Kiplin Hall near Northallerton is a little gem. Good base to explore County Durham and parts of Yorkshire. We really enjoyed our stay.

  • "The cottage was comfortable and very clean."

Everything in kitchen was available. My only issues were the heating which we sorted with owner. We could have done with another set towels. Also a larger fridge or put fridge higher up as had to go on my knees to see inside. Don't understand why books and games were removed as there was dvds and maps available.

. Cottage has all you need and is a cozy retreat for two. The location of Ovington was new to us. It was a brilliant base for accessing coast ie Staithes and for places like Muker and Keld. In the national park. High Force waterfall only 30 min away too. Great spot for touring.

  • "The cottage is ideal for 2 people to share a peaceful getaway in a very quiet area."

It is very well maintained, with all modern facilities, and was very comfortable. It is very well placed for travelling out to many other areas to explore, and also close to plenty of local attractions. There was a lovely welcome pack awaiting us when we arrived, with tea, coffee, biscuits, etc and a nice little bottle of gin to be sampled. The village is only small, but the local pub, The Four Alls, was very welcoming and the owners, Dave and Christine made us most welcome, as did the locals who drink in there too. We will most definitely be back.

  • "This was our second stay at The Conifers and it was just as good as we remembered from last time."

It’s a lovely, clean & comfortable place for a week in a lovely part of the UK. We enjoy walking and managed to do several countryside walks from the cottage, without too much on roads and also ventured further afield to Upper Teesdale, to do a few miles of the Pennine Way. We knew we would be able to relax and recover in comfort at the end of each day. There are plenty of other attractions, like Bowes Museum and Raby Castle within easy reach, so a week soon flies by. Thanks again for a lovely place to stay and the gifts of food and drink, that were left for us in the kitchen.

  • "A beautiful cottage in a pleasant peaceful village."

Ovington is a great place to explore the north of England, in the seven days there we visited Barnards Castle, Richmond, Durham, Raby Castle and gardens, Whitby, Brough Castle, Beamish, The High and Low Force Falls and Villamora and Sycamore Gap on Hadrian's Wall. The Cottage itself had everything you could possibly need. We had great contact with the owners who left teas, coffees, cookies etc. All in all we would return without hesitation and would recommend it to anyone. Iain and Pauline Frazer

It is all on the ground floor. It was very clean and the kitchen was well equipped. The hamlet was very quiet and well located for exploring the northern part of the Dales and towns like Richmond. It is about an hour's drive from places like Fountains Abbey, Hawes etc. The bed was firm but very comfortable. The shower was not as strong as we would have liked but adequate for the 3 days we were there. The TV was tiny by modern standards but a good selection of DVDs was available. The owners had kindly provided some milk and tea for our arrival. Parking is on the very quiet road outside the cottage. We counted 3 cars go past between 8am and 9am one morning!! The pub opposite is pleasant with decent beer and the owners are very friendly. It is not open every day. There is no shop in the hamlet.

Raby Castle, excellent; the Bird of Prey Centre at Walworth and the Organic shop & cafe and Roman site at Piercebridge all brilliant and close. Durham (45 mins away) worth a trip to Crook Hall on the edge of the city and the cathedral and surrounds all good. Take a ride over the dales to escape everyone else and be amazed at the space and beauty. "Hannah's meadow" near Hunderthwaite is a story worth visiting, especially early July when the wild flowers drift across the unspoiled meadow. We strongly recommend the cottage as a perfect place to be for a holiday.

The property

The Conifers, an early nineteenth century stone-built cottage of character, is located in the peaceful, small picturesque rural 'Maypole' village of Ovington, near both the ever popular market towns of Barnard Castle in Teesdale and Richmond in North Yorkshire.

Full of character and charm, this cottage dates back to the 1800s and is perfect for that well-earned, romantic break.

Set over one floor, you will find at the front of the cottage a cosy sitting room and a double bedroom overlooking a pretty lawned south-facing walled front garden.

To the rear, the spacious kitchen/diner is a real highlight, with French doors that open out onto an enclosed walled courtyard garden; a delightful space to sit and enjoy a glass of wine in the sunshine.

Also completing this lovely cottage is a stylish bathroom.

Ovington has a picturesque green and a short walk from The Conifers is the fantastic traditional pub, The Four Alls, which serves home cooked food and cask ales.

Barnard Castle with its cobbled streets and the Bowes Museum is a 15 minute drive away, with Richmond a 20 minute drive, where at both you will find a bustling high streets full of pubs and restaurants, along with charming, independent shops.

The Pennine and Teesdale Ways, the medieval Raby Castle with deer park and magnificent waterfalls at High Force are all nearby.

A delightful cottage from which to explore Teesdale and beyond.
