  • “A wonderful house perfect for a family get-to-together.”

Because of timings we were welcomed by the host Lindsay who gave us a tour of the house and kindly welcomed the group with wine, chocolates and local delicatessen. We stayed here for my In-Laws 50th Wedding Anniversary celebrations. The house was clean, warm, and full of everything you could possibly need to enjoy a weekend with the family. There is more than enough space for big groups to sit together for meals and games. There is also plenty of room to spread out and lots of rooms to explore ...

There is also plenty of room to spread out and lots of rooms to explore if you need some quiet time. The games room provided plenty of fun for the younger ones and the oldies. The top garden is safe and secure for dogs and you a stone's throw away from the local pub (check the board for opening times). There are some superb walks right from the front door and if you want to travel a little further afield Richmond and Barnard Castle are within easy driving distance. But you don't need to leave the house - games, books and movies are all ready to go and with more than enough wine glasses, it's easy to relax with a few bubbles! A huge thank you to our hosts who made this one of the easiest cottage stays. Nothing was too much trouble. I truly great weekend was had by all.

The property

Mill Farm House is a lovely Grade II listed farm house on the edge of the pretty village of Ravensworth, North Yorkshire with its wide green and ruined castle.

The comfortable and spacious house with its attached barn conversion sleeps 16 people in eight bedrooms, with five bath and shower rooms.

Entering the house from the courtyard, there is a small stone flagged hall, with space for coats and boots, leading to the spacious farmhouse kitchen, the heart of the house.

With an oil-fired ESSE range and induction hob, it is a lovely space to cook, gather, eat and relax.

The oak table seats twelve easily and there is a smaller breakfast table that can be added to seat sixteen.

There is a woodburner and French windows leading to the walled front garden, with terrace.

The ground floor has two sitting rooms, one with a woodburner, a piano and a wide selection of board games.

The second sitting room has a smart TV and original working shutters.

There are five comfortable double bedrooms in the main farmhouse (one on the ground floor), with views of the garden and the landscape beyond, and two en-suite bathrooms and a family bathroom.

There are a further three double bedrooms, a bathroom and a shower room in the attached converted barn.

Outside the kitchen French windows, the walled front garden has a terrace, lawn, borders and a further seating area surrounded by flowers .

In front of the house is the paddock, with lawns, asparagus and raspberry beds and a small orchard with a swing and a treehouse “ There is access to a shallow stream, perfect for paddling.”.

Ravensworth has a lovely wide village green with views of the castle and Holmedale.

The village has a pub at the side of the green, a small farm shop and the Ravensworth Nurseries, selling super summer plants.

A mile across the fields takes you to Mainsgill Farm Shop with its fantastic food hall and play areas.

The house is ten minutes’ drive from the Georgian market towns of Richmond and Barnard Castle and a perfect base for exploring the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

About the location

RAVENSWORTH

Richmond 4.5 miles; Barnard Castle 8 miles.

The peaceful, unspoilt and extremely pretty little village of Ravensworth lies just to the north of Richmond in a minor tributary of the River Swale. Made up of pretty, weathered sandstone cottages with their unusual 'Yorkshire' roofs - a mix of soft red pantiles and slate – the village is centred around a wide, picturesque village green. At one end of the green the popular Bay Horse Inn serves good food and drink. Pretty footpaths run from Ravensworth through the surrounding villages allowing visitors to enjoy many circular walks. Close by are the popular Swaledale market town of Richmond and the Teesdale market town of Barnard Castle. Both offer a wide range of amenities and shops. A lovely restful location!
