“Fantastic cottage in a beautiful location would recommend to anyone.”

    - Ms Parr, May 2019

The property

This beautiful, stone-built terraced cottage was built in 1680, in the centre of the pretty village of Preston-under-Scar, just three miles from Leyburn.

It is one of our finest cottages in the Yorkshire Dales and has an unusual, appealing layout, full of lovely surprises at every turn.

From the immense charm of the dining kitchen to the beautiful sitting room and attractive bedrooms, this is a holiday home of considerable merit.

The cottage is set over three floors, featuring a lower ground floor kitchen/diner, which looks out over the rear, south facing garden and has comfy seating for four by a cosy woodburning stove.

There is also a handy utility/boot room, which leads to a covered porch and offers another entrance into the property from the street, where you can dry the dog off after a long walk.

The spacious sitting room is on the ground floor and has a feature Georgian fireplace, a lovely mixture of old and new furnishings and a fabulous, south-facing balcony, which enjoys panoramic views out across the dale and Penhill.

Outside, the garden is enclosed, with a terraced seating area where, in the summer, you can sit and relax with an evening tipple.

A modern shower room is also found on the ground floor and upstairs, there is a bathroom and three stylish bedrooms, one with excellent views and a double bed, another with a king-size double bed and finally, a single bedroom.

This 300-year old cottage is located on the fringe of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with lovely walks leading from the doorstep, including a pretty walk through the woods to Leyburn Shawl.

Alternatively, if you’re after something a little more energetic, the challenge of Penhill awaits!

Visit nearby Bolton Castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was held captive, visit the famous Aysgarth Falls, or take a ride on the Wensleydale Railway.

Situated centrally to Yorkshire, this beautiful cottage in Preston-under-Scar is ideal for a romantic break, or a getaway with friends.

About the location

Castle Bolton 2 miles; Leyburn 3 miles; Aysgarth 6 miles.

The village of Preston-under-Scar is located three miles west of the market town of Leyburn, in a stunning part of The Yorkshire Dales. It is a hidden gem, full of heritage and links to the lead mining industry, with scattered remains throughout the village and the local woods. In July, the village hosts an exhibition of local artists' work, a focal point for visitors and locals alike. This idyllic Wensleydale village is situated in a walker’s paradise, close to Castle Bolton, Bolton Hall, Leyburn and the famous Aysgarth Falls. It is also located perfectly for cycling; the famous opening stages of the 2014 Tour de France passed just over a mile away. For the adventurous, mountain biking routes run from the door, over Preston moor and into wild Swaledale. Nearby, Redmire is on the Wensleydale Railway, which features steam locomotives during the summer and has regular special events. Redmire's village pub serves good food and there is an excellent range of amenities in the nearby market town of Leyburn. Visit Castle Bolton, with its mighty towers and rectangular courtyard, one of the finest preserved medieval castles in Yorkshire. Dating back to 1378, much of the castle survived the orders to destroy famous Yorkshire castles, issued by Parliament in the Civil War. A short drive away, Carperby was an important centre for Quakerism. Today, its largest building is the classically-styled Friends Meeting House, which overlooks the market cross and village green. From this wonderful village of Preston-under-Scar, the entire Dales Park is easily accessible, making it a fantastic base for exploring this beautiful region.
