It's location is great for all Richmond has to offer. It's only a 3 or 4 minute walk into the centre. The cottage was well equipped with everything you need. The outside space, although small, is a little suntrap. It was great for a late afternoon G&T after exploring Richmond. We would definitely book again if visiting Richmond.

  • "Positives - The location of the property is great - so handy for town, riverside, castle etc."

Also the fact that it has a car parking space is a big thumbs up! Nice table and chairs to sit in the patio/garden area. Negatives - the overall feel to me is that the property could benefit from a thorough cleaning. So dusty in the bedroom particularly under the bed and the cupboard in the bathroom was unusable as it was dirty. Shower seals need cleaning. The blind, door curtain and cushions in the living area are faded and don’t look good. Sofa is very uncomfortable. Several other small negatives which sound petty on their own, but altogether didn’t make for a clean space to be in. Such a shame.

This was our second stay at Olive Cottage so we knew what to expect. Everything was in order and working. Location is great for walking into Richmond. Parking is a huge bonus. Its a very small cottage but is fine for an organised couple for a week. Food shopping in Richmond is quite limited unless you like Lidl, so we ordered a Tesco's delivery. But be careful how much you order as there is very little storage space and no freezer compartment in the fridge. We would happily stay again. Thank you to the owner and caretaker.

  • "Small but perfectly formed."

A lovely little cottage in a great position within the town and with parking. Everything we required was provided, even used the oven a couple of times. And the little yard is lovely to sit out in. The cottage is tiny and you need to be organised but for two it is great. We put the empty suit cases back into the car for storage during the week. A very short walk gets you to liddl or the Co-op in the square so no need to stock up on stuff. Great place to use as a base to explore the area. A couple of minor notes to the owner. When we got there the recycling box was full so we didn't use it. Then the bin men refused to take it and put a note on it saying it was mixed. So I think the recycling info could be a bit clearer (what to recycle, what needs splitting out and where to put each type). We did use the water filter for the kettle as requested, however, the jug was dirty with black mould and the filter indicator did not work. I gave it a basic clean but it needs a deep clean and an indicator that works. I wouldn't like to think of people drinking the water out of the jug without boiling it. Maybe a comments book in the cottage would be good then I wouldn't have needed to put these comments on here. But in summary it was lovely and I'm just about to book again for next year.

The living room is dark, this is particularly the case in the kitchen area - a light is needed there. Enough cutlery and crockery for two, No dish cloths to clean the working area. Most places provide a little milk, tea and coffee for guests on arrival until they have shopped. None were provided. About the location

RICHMOND

Barnard Castle 10 miles; Leyburn 12 miles.

Situated at the entrance to Swaledale, the ancient market town of Richmond stands on a prominent hilltop site to the north of the River Swale. Its cobbled streets and narrow alleys or 'wynds' enshrine over nine centuries of busy history and unique character. The town grew up around its castle, a Norman fortress dating back to 1071, famously situated high above the river - indeed the name Richmond is derived from 'Riche-mont' meaning 'strong hill'. Today there are wonderful walks to be enjoyed such as the Castle Walk - a dramatic terrace walk beneath the castle walls - or alternatively walk alongside the River Swale where there are parks, safe paddling areas and small waterfalls to enjoy. Within the town, narrow streets and alleys radiate from the cobbled Market Place (which has a weekly market and monthly farmers’ market) and there are numerous shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy. The town flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries and the resulting elegant Georgian architecture lines many of the old streets. The Georgian Theatre is one of the oldest surviving theatres in the country with visitors enjoying its regular productions all year round.
