From the minute we walked in, it was warm and welcoming. There were books to help with questions that you may have and manuals for the microwave/oven etc. The bed was extremely comfortable. The location of the cottage was excellent and the information about the walk over the road was great and used to walk the dog. The village itself was lovely, with everything that you may need. It was a shame that the tea room/ restaurant was closed for Christmas, but to be expected. We would visit again.

Was maybe a bit of a squeeze for 4 adults, but we managed fine and still had a great time. The road running through the village was a bit busier than expected (not necessarily the cottages fault). Nice period features in the cottage, especially the beam above the cooker. Found some beautiful walks in the area, especially high force waterfall.

  • "This is a lovely, characterful, well-equipped cottage in a beautiful historic village."

While it’s in the middle of the green near the through road to Barnard Castle, it’s surprisingly pretty peaceful. I’m a light sleeper but we both slept well. The village has a lovely feel to it and everyone’s very friendly. Spar very useful! Surrounded by countryside with walks from the front door if you wish but also only a short drive to great walks in the Dales as well as nearby Barnard Castle and Raby. The cottage is very comfortable - great having 2 sofas, the kitchen has everything you need as we mainly cook in and a decent size fridge freezer. A bonus to find TV with Netflix and Amazon! Lovely to sit outside in the garden in the morning with a coffee and watch the world go by on the green or read a book. Lots of helpful little notes around to help you operate things and Mike was very responsive to queries before and during our stay which was much appreciated.

  • "We were looking for somewhere to stay so we could visit Durham, and Corner Cottage seemed to fit the bill."

Durham was, of course, wonderful but the village of Staindrop was a revelation. Much more charming than we expected. We loved living there for a week. Corner Cottage has the old world character you might expect from a 17th Century house, but with up to date necessities. The decoration is the right balance of homely and tasteful. The sofas are very comfortable, and a lovely place to sit and enjoy the woodburning stove. The kitchen has a good sized fridge and the equipment a holiday chef might need. The main bedroom was cosy, with ample storage and the king-sized bed very comfortable. We didn’t notice the road at all. There are a variety of walks from the door and Staindrop is well placed for touring the area. The pleasant market town of Castle Barnard is a short drive away and the lovely, larger town of Richmond a bit further. Lots of other things to do and see, or you can just enjoy the wonderful countryside.

Corner Cottage very much exceeded our expectations. Staindrop is a beautiful village with many very friendly helpful residents. It is delightfully rural and quiet, with civilisation nicely nearby. The cottage is hard to find, but very well equipped. Cosy and warm with a great log burner. Very spacious and comfortable. There is so much to see and do, though it was sad that under the current circumstances most of them were shut, but we still managed to find things to do. I cannot rate this cottage highly enough, and we will certainly be staying here again. The owners are very helpful and friendly too, we accidently left an electronic device behind, and they posted back to us. Stay here, you will not be disappointed Scott and Julie. P.s. The eggs are lovely!

Staindrop is a large and pretty village and it is very quiet. Only a few shops, a Spar, a butchers and 2 tea shops, with one local's pub, so you need to travel if you wish to go out to eat. • "On a positive note - the cottage was clean and comfortable and it was good to have eggs, milk, tea and biscuits left for us."

Thanks! One thing, though, that we hadn't realised was how close the cottage is to the very busy main road through the village. We found the traffic noise woke us up every morning, which was a shame. I think this fact should be included in the information because we wouldn't have chosen it had we known how noisy the road is. Also - there was a problem with the shower while we were there - which was fixed - but for three days we had to have a bucket catching water by the front door (the seal around the bath had come away and water was just coming through the ceiling). This wasn't great while we were trying to relax on holiday! The other thing is that the cottage says that dogs are welcome - but then when we got there the info in the cottage said that dogs were not allowed upstairs. My partner's dog is a guide dog, and is accustomed to sleeping in the bedroom. I think if there is a restriction on where the dog is allowed to go within the property - that information should be included in the description on the website (apologies if it is there - I didn't see it).

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry you were disturbed by the road noise, this hasn't been a complaint previously. The cottage does have double glazing and faces away from the road. If we had been aware that the dog you had was an assistance dog we would have endeavoured to help, the rules regarding dogs are part of the booking terms and are there as a courtesy to all guests. We hope you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

  • "If you are considering renting Corner Cottage then I would have absolutely no hesitation in urging you to do it."

The cottage itself is compact, but has two double bedrooms so will comfortably sleep 4. The open plan kitchen is small but very well designed and equipped with everything you could ask for. The bathroom is also quite small, but well planned and the roof window makes it really light and airy. The shower over the bath is awesome. The main bedroom has a tv and DAB radio, and there is a tv and another DAB radio CD player in the living area. The two of us found it a great place to stay, and very comfortable. The views out across the green were also really nice, giving it a great village feel. To be fair though, we didn't go to the Dales to sit indoors, and this cottage is perfectly placed to enjoy the area. There are nice walks around the village and Raby Castle is very nearby. Barnard Castle is also close, as is Bishop Auckland (and both of those have numerous places to eat or get take-aways). The Dales themselves are obviously also very close by, (amongst other things we walked from Keld to Muker and back which was superb, visited High and Low force waterfalls and took a trip to the Tan Hill Inn, England's highest pub, which was also very enjoyable with some great views). The Durham Coast (we went to Seaham) to the East and the Lake District to the West are also very easy to get to for a day trip. The cottage has plenty of information and leaflets for the local attractions, as well as a very useful OS map. We would return to Corner Cottage without a second thought, (to be fair we would both like to live there permanently!) and the whole booking process through Sykes was as easy as it could possibly be. If you like the sound of the cottage from the advertisement but are just not quite sure, then in our opinion you should just go for it.

Plenty of space to park the car. The hosts responded quickly to texts in a warm and welcoming manner. They left a box of shortbread for our arrival. Initially the cottage was cold (but it was minus 4 degrees Celsius outside) so was to be expected. Log burner easy to light, and the cottage warmed quickly. Very clean, well-equipped kitchen, extremely good/comfortable mattresses on beds and plenty of storage in the bedrooms. Shower sufficiently powerful, and it proved easy to regulate the temperature. (These things are so important in cold, snowy weather!) Although the cottage feels rural from inside, there is a Spar directly across the road for essentials, and a bus stop close by. It was a really nice touch to find lots of farm eggs in the kitchen. The cottage is lovely and cosy, with a very comfortable king-size bed. We didn't need the wood burning stove, but can imagine the lounge area would have been very cosy with that lit. I really liked the way that there were climbing roses surrounding the front door, with small fairy lights which came on at night, and a small seating area in the front garden which overlooks the green. It is a very convenient spot from which to explore various places in Co. Durham and N. Yorkshire - and great to have the very good café at Raby Castle virtually on our doorstep. The owner was very helpful - and although we only needed to check out a couple of things he was very quick to respond. The information file was also extremely helpful - especially the recommendations about local eating places: we went to two of those and both were really good. There were only 2 of us and we found that really comfortable, but thought it might have felt a little over-crowded with 4 adults, although it may be that we just like to spread out, as others had clearly managed very well!

The popular market town of Barnard Castle is 5 miles away, with its castle, the Bowes Museum, plus of course its wide range of shops and tea rooms. Walkers will enjoy the many walks around Teesdale.
