  • "Arrived found the cottage to be clean and tidy No toilet roll supplied on arrival lucky we had brought x 1 limited firewood and fire lighters for fire and matches (these matches) appeared to have been there since the mid eighties we had to go & buy matches logs for fire & 2024 matches as it was still chilly in April."

The oven was unclean there had been a previous meal cooked on the grill with the tin foil still in place and this needed cleaning before we did any cooking. Whilst we know about the rustic feel to cottages Various items we found were poor. Heating / no control is on central heating - it came on automatic such at 2am created v warm main bedroom which meant I had to use the other twin room as my wife was too hot - the boiler was very noisy in operation so take ear plugs. We think there is a general update needed in this property the kitchen looks tired and the cupboard doors are not fitting properly. My wife’s 60th birthday weekend we left a bit disappointed really.

You seemed very disappointed with our generous welcome fuel pack and offer of more logs for the stove and decided to reflect that in your review. The matches provided are certainly less than 40 years old as they were successfully used by previous guests. The kitchen and central heating are both very recent and in perfect order with detailed instructions and I also texted offering assistance. It must have been gutting to spend the special birthday on your own because you couldn’t turn the radiator off. The boiler is very well sound insulated. We clean the grill pan and provide fresh cooking foil for every new guest also spare loo roll in bathroom cabinet - free Prosecco for next year’s birthday though ! PS loved the way you removed your lipstick every night on the new white towels Thanks ! Property Owner

  • "We enjoyed our Christmas week at Sunny cottage despite the poor weather."

It was warm and welcoming and had everything we needed. The wood burning stove was particularly enjoyable. Our hosts had very kindly decorated the cottage with a lovely Christmas tree and left us some very pleasant treats. We would definitely recommend sunny Cottage as a base for visiting beautiful Teesdale and will be returning in the future.

  • "We enjoyed a pleasant week at Sunny Cottage in the characterful village of Staindrop, even though the weather wasn't great."

Can recommend the cafe. There were plenty of indoor places to visit nearby and Richmond and Bishop Aukland are well worth the short drive. The owner is readily available by text, if needed, and was very helpful in finding and returning an item we left behind.

It was lovely coming back after a day out, settling down with a glass of wine , also complimentary, watching a film. Went to the local pub which was so nice and the people were very friendly, would definitely recommend and go back again, thanks to Mike & Fiona .

  • "Our dogs could get out of the garden under the gate a bit worrying with the busy road at the back of the cottage."

We would of liked to be able to keep the bedroom window open it was very hot but the sash window wouldn't stay up.toilet roll holder & hand towel holder in the bathroom are hanging off the wall so didn't use them.

We were unaware of your issues with the gate and window as you chose not to inform us of a problem - we would have been delighted to assist ! A couple of the bathroom fittings were slightly loose but perfectly usable Property Owner

  • "A lovely cottage in a charming village."

Everything you could need for a most enjoyable stay. Barnard Castle on your doorstep, Durham, Richmond the Dales and the coast within easy reach. We didn't have the best of the weather on our stay but the cottage and the surrounding area ensured this didn't stop us from having a great week away. Highly recommended.

  • "Beautiful cottage, perfectly set in the middle of the village with lots of walks nearby."

Lovely little courtyard that is a little suntrap. Walk around fields right across the green from the cottage, perfect if you have dogs. Hosts were lovely and kept in touch with information, handy information booklet and leaflets provided. Everything you need for a quiet break away.

  • "The property owner was was advised of all issues including health and safety."

He said he was sending his housekeeper who lived next door, however a school girl around 15 -16 arrived I suspect not the housekeeper. She said not a word agreed with our finding, was showed photos also. And was extremely nervous this was totally unfair and not the housekeeper at all. Her mother remained next door. Our weeks stay amounted to 3 days as conditions were to bad to stay. I did contact Sykes who also done nothing. I will not be using this company again, which is a shame as previously had accommodation booked with them with no problems. The landlord is well known in the village for treating people in this way, only after the money I suspect. I could go on but suspect it will fall on deaf ears.

Neither Sykes or myself still understand what the guests issues were with Sunny Cottage as she could not provide any details or evidence of a problem - except the lack of a fire extinguisher- which was on top of the fridge right next to the stove. We take safety issues seriously and she gave us no opportunity to assist. Property Owner

About the location

STAINDROP

Barnard Castle 5 miles; Durham 20 miles.

The pretty Teesdale village of Staindrop has always been closely associated with the fortunes of nearby Raby Castle and its owners. The Castle (open to the public) is one of the most grand in England. Enlarged and beautified over the centuries, the medieval heart remains and a walled garden and 200 acre deer park add to the splendour. Staindrop has many interesting shops, pubs and cafes set round its long village green. The popular market town of Barnard Castle is 5 miles away, with its castle, the Bowes Museum, plus of course its wide range of shops and tea rooms. Walkers will enjoy the many walks around Teesdale.
