In a superb location for touring the North Pennines and County Durham, this cosy, end-terrace, Grade II listed cottage is set in the historic village of Staindrop, approximately one mile from Raby Castle.
You will feel at home the moment you enter this delightful cottage, which brims with cosy character and charm, offering a perfect retreat for couples looking to discover Durham’s many delights.
The comfy sitting room provides a welcome respite at the end of a busy day’s sightseeing, whilst the kitchen next door offers all you need to rustle up a warming supper.
A wooden staircase from the sitting area winds up to a shower room and pretty bedroom with a quirky bay window.
To the rear of Wayside Cottage is a charming little cobbled courtyard, an ideal spot for an alfresco drink or letting the doggies out safely for a bit of fresh air.
The surrounding area is ideal for walking and sightseeing, with a host of historical buildings to visit nearby, including impressive Raby Castle, The Bowes Museum, the roofless ruins of Barnard Castle and Eggleston Hall, set in attractive walled gardens.
Enjoy a stroll along the River Tees or for the more energetic, follow the Teesdale Way up the valley.
A few miles drive brings you to the popular market town of Barnard Castle with quaint tea rooms and antique shops lining the cobbled streets.
The spectacular set of falls, including High Force, Low Force and Cauldron Snout, lie further up the river valley and are well worth visiting, as is the charming village of Middleton-in-Teesdale.
This is a cosy, romantic retreat in an excellent location and an excellent place to return to after each day’s adventure.

Everything about the cottage surpassed my expectations. It was spotlessly clean, there was excellent information from the property owner. We would have even been able to check in early if it hadn't been for traffic delays! The sitting room was large and very comfortable. We didn't cook as we ate out and visited family, but the kitchen was well equipped. The shower was large and powerful and the bed extremely comfy. The village was lovely and there was a green right on the doorstep for easy early morning dog walks. I would definitely recommend this cottage and Sykes to friends and family - in fact since returning 3 days ago, we have booked again through Sykes!- Mr Summerbell, May 2021

Welcome packs for both ourselves and our dog were a lovely touch and also extras that were left for our arrival. “The cottage was a perfect home from home, the kitchen was well stocked with everything you may need, even down to a tassimo coffee machine.”
The outside space was small but again perfect to sit in to drink that morning coffee. We found the location of the cottage very central for the Lake District, the Northumberland coast, Durham and Hadrian wall. The cottage is comfortable and welcoming for a much needed break. “Just enjoyed a wonderful time at Wayside Cottage in a very pretty village.”
The cottage has everything you need for a comfortable stay and is very well maintained and spotless. A shame the village pub doesn't do food but after a recommendation from our excellent host we ate at the Brownlow Arms at Caldwell and the food was delicious. We visited High Force waterfalls which was amazing and also the stunning Raby Castle and gardens a day to remember. Would love to return to this cosy cottage for 2 sometime.- Mrs Bowling, July 2020
“Wayside Cottage was very well equipped to a very high standard.”
It is small, as described so great for a couple alone or possibly with a baby. The bathroom is creatively laid out to maximise space and the kitchen was likewise, well set out to make the most of the space. Raby Castle is stunning and Barnard Castle has lots of eateries, and of course the Castle, close by. The owners are communicative and kind and we were touched by the dog treats (and human treats) left out for our stay.- Ms Ashmore, July 2020
