  • "Cottage was clean, warm and comfortable."

It was not really suitable for anyone, like me, with mobility issues. The over bath shower and bath were unusable, due to the very high sided bath. The outlook was gloomy onto the small shared courtyard. Cottage very convenient for local shops and pub.

  • "A lovely beautiful decorated cottage in a nice little village with the added benefit of a hot tub."

A well equipped large kitchen, washing machine, 2 comfortable bedrooms, we couldn’t get the freesat box to work to watch tv so just watched catch up. Added touches like bathrobes with castle motifs on them along with champagne bucket and glasses. Village has a post office, shop, 3 pubs, Indian, Chinese and fish and chip takeaway along with a tapas restaurant. Parking on-site for just one car but parked a five minute walk up the road no problem. Ideal position to explore Durham and Hadrons Wall.

  • "Bathroom very inconvenient, especially for older, smaller people like ourselves."

Difficult to get in and out of the bath. Showering unsafe as there was no slip mat in the bath. Extractor fan switch over door, impossible to reach to turn on and off. Insufficient towels, one bath towel each and one hand towel between us is not enough for a week. Also the plug in the washbasin did not fit, so water ran out. Nowhere outside to dry anything, and no dryer in the property.

  • "We absolutely loved our stay at Arch Spa."

The rooms where perfect and had everything you could need. The hot tub hot and well secluded and a lovely way to relax after days out. Many amazing places to visit within a 45 minute drive and the views where to die for. In the village it self, the pubs where all different from each other and we enjoyed drinks in each, we also ate at the Bonny Moorhen which was lovely food. We also had a takeaway from the Indian which was spot on. A definite if we came again which we most likely will. We also went a little further afield to the Owl and Otter pub and the Sunday lunch there was incredible. A 5***** holiday for the 4 of us. Dean & Liz Bowman.

The accommodation was first class, very clean and comfortable. Grounds and surrounding area were beautiful and great for our dog who loved it. Would highly recommend the local pub for food (The Bonny Moorhen), dogs welcome also! Overall a prefect getaway to recharge the batteries.

  • "A fantastic stay."

The place is set in beautiful grounds and are very well kept. It was clean and tidy and highly furnished. Hot tub a great addition. The little welcome gifts (egg and wine!) were a lovely gesture as it was Easter! Good location for walks or short drives to attractions ie Beamish Museum. The only minor thing is to be careful when having a shower as the shower screen sometimes leaked but overall a wonderful shower. Would highly recommend and we will be back soon!

  • "Lovely property, clean, warm and cosy - photos very well taken to make size appear bigger than actual."

Would've been better described as "no pets" as there were no facilities to assist with cleaning of dog, so became an obsession to keep everywhere clean/dry, therefore avoiding deposit withholdal for muddy carpets etc. Hot-tub was cold on arrival, would've been nice following a five hour drive to enjoy it on first night. Temperature settings appear tampered with half way through week, as it never got quite hot enough from day 4 onwards. Ruth/Scott seemed lovely & were available when assistance was required during the week.

Thanks for your comments Mark. as a matter of health and hygiene.we have to drain and refill the hot tubs after each guests.the hot tub heats 1.5 degrees an hour, and unfortunatley your hot tub was filled and treated last on this particular day. we set the hot tub temperatures at 37 degrees as recommended by the manufactures. best regards stanhope castle Property Owner

  • "Excellent service."

Everything was clean, serviced and comfortable. Arch Spa is furnished to a very high standard. One of the very very few occasions I have been able to sleep in a comfy bed. Owners were helpful and quickly sorted a ninor issue. Only advice I would suggest is more cleaning facilities, particularly for dog washing if possible to help keep it clean spring the stay, but that's being picky. It was simply excellent.

thank you for your comments. im not sure how we could work it in the way of hanging up or positioning dog towels within the properties. generally the dog owners would bring their own towels to clean and dry their dogs feet. we plan to remove carpets and lay floor tiles in most of the properties that accept pets in the new year. best regards stanhope castle Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely break in Stanhope and the property was a fantastic base for our trip."

It's been done up to a really high standard and is very spacious and comfortable. The beds are comfy, the living room is cosy, the kitchen is huge, and the bathroom is lovely. The hot tub was also a great way to wind down after a long walk in the dales. Ruth, who looks after the place, was also really helpful - she called me up the week before we arrived to let us know that there'd be a bit of noise outside the house the weekend we arrived because of the annual Stanhope Show (we hadn't planned to be there for the Show but it was a nice surprise) and she also arranged to return a coat which I left in the cupboard before I even realised I'd forgotten it! The only additional suggestions we'd make would be for a dishwasher in the kitchen (there's more than enough cupboard space), perhaps a few more chopping boards, maybe an additional towel rail in the bathroom, and bedside lamps with switches you can actually reach from the bed!

Just a short walk takes you to the village square and local shops. Great local walks for the dog and the village is ideally situated for exploring the surrounding countryside. I would have no hesitation in recommending this cottage for a holiday in this area of outstanding beauty and interest. My only criticism would be there is no dishwasher which we would have preferred to the washing machine.

The cottages were beautiful. Exactly as advertised and decorated to a very high standard. I must add that the beds were the most comfortable I have ever slept in.The detail to finish was excellent. The only draw back for us, was you have to be out of the hot tub by 10pm. Which we totally appreciated as neighbouring with other cottages. However, for us personally we would of preferred to have unlimited use especially as it was classed as a “spa lodge” The owner was very friendly and did explain the reasons for 10pm time limit. I could highly recommend staying here and would certainly stay again. Thankyou for our amazing stay and great memories of Stanhope Castle.

All the utensils, cutlery, trays etc you need which is great at the moment if you’re cautious about eating out. The property was also spotlessly clean with plenty of fresh towels and bed linen. Stanhope is a nice little village with a lovely playground and stepping stones just up from the property but to be honest we used it more as a base. There is so much to do in the area - we packed in Raby Castle, Highforce Waterfall, Hamsterley Forest’s Gruffalo trail and a trip to Beamish. Can also recommend takeout from local tapas restaurant, Che - literally the best burgers we have ever eaten! We will definitely be returning to the north east and would stay here again.

One of the best places we have ever stayed in. Comfy beds, lovely and clean everywhere, well equipped kitchen plus lots of essentials were provided, such as washing up liquid, antibacterial wipes, toilet rolls.. The village of Stanhope had a bakery, greengrocer, butchers, co-op, a couple of pubs, fish & chips and an Indian takeaway - all a 2 min walk from the cottage. There were several other shops too and a lovely tapas restaurant that you could order takeaway from. The hot tub was nice and it was in a great location for visiting Hadrian’s Wall, Durham, Hamsterley forest and further afield - Bamburgh and Alnwick castles.

The welcome basket was much appreciated and the accommodation is very spacious. The bundle of tourist guide info was great to browse through. All rooms are decorated to a high standard. There were lots of utensils etc but a few little extra bits and pieces would make it perfect - tea pot, cafetière, fruit bowl, knives for spreading butter/jam (I know this seems picky but the ones supplied were too sharp for this and we ended up spreading with the back of a spoon!). A Bath mat would be helpful (this is a health and safely issue as the tiled floor is very slippy and we had to use hand towels). Would expect a dishwasher in a property of this size but it didn’t detract from our enjoyment! Will definitely recommend this property to friends. Lovely decor, great location and easy booking.
