  • "Stayed at this property for the second time and it did not disapppoint."

Extremely clean and comfortable accommodation with everything you need for a self catering break. Hot tub was fabulous and beds very comfortable. Had a delish evening meal and Sunday lunch in the castle. Staff are so friendly and professional absolutely top notch. Would highly recommend this accommodation and the castle

  • "The property was amazing and suited our needs 100%."

Just perfect. It is in need of updating as there was damp mould around some of the windows and some the radiators were starting to rust. Additional cooking utensils are required, no wooden spoons, serving spoons, etc…. These are just minor, but noticeable suggestions. Overall we were delighted with the property and have already recommended it to our friends. We stay in the North East every year and we ALWAYS stay here from now on.

  • "Excellent property but a couple of points worth mentioning…."

A grab rail in the shower would be useful for more senior visitors plus poor quality toilet paper is disappointing in a cottage with such high standards. Traffic noise is noticeable at commuting time, ie early morning and early evening. On the plus side a short walk to the castle for our meals was great and the staff couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful. Scrummy food too.

The accommodation is spacious, warm and comfortable, everything seems well thought out, and for us there was everything we needed (although it did take all 3 of us some time to work out how to use the oven and microwave, but we got there in the end!). There was a welcome basket with cereal, tea, coffee and biscuits and even a bottle of wine :) All cleaning stuff was provided including dishwasher tablets. The Hot Tub was fantastic, we were so lucky with the weather. As other reviews have mentioned, a few fairy lights would be nice out there... The Hotel staff were all lovely, we had booked in for a delicious afternoon tea when we arrived, then Sunday Lunch in the restaurant was sooo good and plenty of it! All in all, we would be back there in a heartbeat...

  • "The property was very spacious and the garden was huge."

Cottage was very clean as well. Everything in the cottage was to a high standard. Hot tub was a good size. The property was in a great location and the hotel grounds were lovely. Good for dog walking. Convenient having the hotel so close by as could go to reception if we had any issues. Also could take dogs into lounge and could eat food in here. Staff at the hotel were lovely and were able to help us straight away when we needed some more glasses and cups. The housekeeper (think her name was Brenda) was especially helpful and she came over to help us with a few things. A couple of improvements needed....could do with some lights on the path leading up to the cottage from where the cars are as couldn't see where to go so had to use torch. Also the WiFi was really patchy and kept dropping out. Could barely load websites. There isn't much phone signal around there so 4g was useless. Could do with either signal booster or better WiFi. Could do with smaller dinner plates as the existing ones didn't fit into the dishwasher properly. Apart from those small issues we had a lovely time and we would be back.

We are pleased you enjoyed your stay with us and that you found our staff to be friendly and helpful. We hope to see you back again soon. Property Owner

  • "The lodge is beautful, the surroundings are lovely and we much enjoyed our short stay."

The accommodation was very elegant and suited our party (6 adults and one infant) very well. There was plenty of room to relax and gather together. The kitchen was large with plenty of room - though we did struggle with the controls for the oven! We did not use the hotel facilities for meals (as we had a small child), but enjoyed the Lodge's hot tub and the multiple rooms (with TVs). Our small granddaughter found plenty to do - with the small children's play area in the grounds and she visited a local soft play park and separately a small farm shop and play park, with a llama, goat, shetland pony and donkey and a play park, plus good coffee shop. Perfect for a morning outing. The hotel staff were friendly and very helpful and responded quickly to our few requests (for high chair and more towels). We arrived early and the Lodge was not quite ready, but we had a tea/coffee in the hotel before being taken to the lodge and shown around. Our only regret was that the weather in february was cold and blowy so we did not use the spacious garden - and garden furniture for eating outside. Overall a lovely break - much to be recommended.

Dear Janet, Thank you so much for taking the time to let us know how much you enjoyed staying at Walworth Castle Lodge. I have passed your comments onto all the team who were involved in making your stay so memorable. We hope to see you back again soon, hopefully when the weather is a bit warmer. • "I’ve just spent a week at the cottage and I never give feedback but I really feel this needs it, especially for the cost of a week here."

First thing no one really wanted to show us around as they seemed to be in the middle of sorting a wedding but a lady did in the end. No welcome pack with info such as how to work the over complicated appliances. We had stayed in the smaller cottage 2 yrs previous and had a welcome hamper and the manger call on us twice to make sure all ok but nothing this time. The place was freezing I pointed this out the the guy sorting the hot tub his reply was “if no one tells us we can’t fix it” I was telling him but it never got looked at all week. So here are the good points and things I think could be improved on Good: Location, castle grounds, size of the property, hot tub and generally well equipped in the kitchen and large garden. Needs work on: Welcome pack/Info Soap in toilet More outside lighting at the front, we had to use a torch to get to the cars. Black bin was almost full when we arrived so we had to leave bags next to the bin which must have looked a right state. Heating needs looking at and one of the radiators in the TV room didn’t work at all which was pointed out to the maintenance man and a electric heater was provided!. They all need bleeding as some are hot in just parts. The fire makes an absolute racket when it’s windy and it doesn’t even work it just makes noise and causes a draft. We called the castle to sort the fire out but no one knew how to fix it so we were given 2 more floor heaters! It’s only by reading reviews on here we can see this isn’t a new issue. Needs a really good clean not just a dust and vac I put my hand down the side of the sofa to find the tv control and the sofa was full of food and wrappers. I had to move the dinning table to get a child’s toy and oh my god the state of the floor under the table it’s not had a proper deep clean for a long time. Shower in the master bedroom runs hot then cold just a bit of a nightmare. If both showers are on the master shower seems to suffer and the water pressure is like a drip. We’re just really disappointed with some of these things and I’m very unlikely to revisit or recommend which is such a shame. I could go on as the list is endless but the main issue are above.

Thank you for your feedback. Customer comments are very important to us. Our check in time for the property is 5pm. As you arrived early, and we did allow you into the property at 2pm, however the duty manager is allocated specific time 5pm, to show guests around therefore was not available at 2pm due to a wedding that was taking place. The maintenance man was in the property on the changeover attending to cleaning the gutters, bleeding the radiators, changing the light bulbs and removing the waste therefore this was all done. We take a great pride in our properties and if there are any issues during your stay, we are on hand to help and it is a shame that nothing was raised to us at the time. Once again, thanks for passing on your feedback to us. Property Owner

Apparently there were problems with the tv broadcast due to the tv transmitter burning down but that wasnt the hotel's fault and was easily fixed by auto-retuning the tv. • "The Lodge is a lovely property in many ways but it is in need of much in the way of TLC."

Although the living space and the main bedroom are spacious, light and airy, some of the furniture, the sofa in one of the lounges is in need of an upgrade and neither TV is wifi enabled. The kitchen must have been very nice when it was first fitted but the vinyl wrap is coming off one of the drawers, the dishwasher only has half of the racks it should have, the cupboard doors are missing off the washer/ dryer, the hob is decidedly tatty and not over clean. In addition, the kitchen is relatively poorly provided for; there are virtually no serving dishes, there is no large saucepan, and the cooking utensils keep coming apart in the middle. We had a problem with the wifi which was virtually un-useable; it did improve slightly when we pointed this out to the manager and something was done about it, but at no point could you stream anything. There was no wifi out of sight of the actual hub. Unfortunately, there was a fire at the local transmitter, meaning no TV service. This was not the fault of the hotel, but it did mean that, as there were no smart TVs, we could not stream anything either. This lodge needs it's own router and it's own system, it should not be part of the hotel system. We had a problem with the shower in the main bedroom en-suite, which was resolved after a few days, but meant that for much of the stay, all 6 of us had to use the main bathroom shower which had no window and became very damp. The lodge is right next to a road, and 2 of the 3 bedrooms have no double glazing. The windows are constantly covered in condensation and the road noise at night is considerable. It is odd that the 2 rooms that most need double glazing do not have it. These rooms are also quite small and cramped. One couple has a spacious, double glazed and well appojinted room, with a massive en-suite whereas the other has a small, cramped room with single glazing that is hard to open to air the room, and only one bedside table. The twin room only has a small bedside table for storage, and the wardrobe lacks drawers or shelves for storing clothes. This could easily be remedied. The large garden is a great space for kids to play and the hot tub is large and a lovely place to relax .The garden furniture is a bit shabby, the [plastic rattan is uncurling, but provides a space to enjoy the sunshine. ```````````````` We enjoyed our stay at the lodge but felt that perhaps more had been done for 'show' in phots than for the genuine comfort of the guests.

Many thanks for your feedback. We can confirm that both TV's are wifi enabled but wifi to the property is slow due to our rural location. The vinyl wrap on one of the kitchen drawers is being repaired within the next 2 weeks. The washer / Dryer isn't integrated so doesn't have a door. They have checked the pans and utensils and they are all adequate. The wifi signal for the whole of Walworth comes from the castle's roof. There is a line of sight from the roof to the lodge and we are governed by Quickline but it isn't the fastest. The building is a 16th century gatehouse and being a listed building we are unable to install more double glazing. We have installed some secondary glazing but this still wouldn't stop the condensation unfortunately. Also due to the age of the building, we are unable to make the rooms any larger. Once again, we thank you for taking the time to give us your valuable feedback. Property Owner

On the surface it was clean but there were spiders webs under the kitchen top units and when we went to sweep the floor the brush was filthy! The hot tub and garden are fantastic, very safe for dogs. The staff at the castle were very helpful and provided soap and other essentials when we asked. It is very remote and definitely not walking distance from any pub/restaurant apart from the castle itself. It felt over priced for what we got but, that said, there were only 2 of us and a dog, if you were sharing cost then it would be reasonable. If you want total chilling out you’d love it.. but if you want to explore then expect a lot of car time.

Also the Wifi was not working when we checked in and was repaired that day but the Wifi does not extend to the bedroom areas and was a little sketchy in the main rooms at times. When the wind blew there was something in the fireplace that flapped around and made a funny noise. On the plus side there was a huge big fridge/freezer and smart microwave. Beds were lovely and comfortable. Plenty of space and nice garden area. Lots of storage in the bedrooms. Most impressive was the fact that a Christmas tree had been put up for us! The property was slightly lacking in cooking equipment and often rental properties have a store of books and board games, not to mention condiments in the kitchen, but there were none at the Lodge. Just an observation but worth bearing in mind if you are visiting this property. Hotel staff were very helpful and pleasant. We ate twice in the 1189 Bar and Kitchen during our week; whilst the food was satisfactory and again the staff were pleasant, this was probably the maximum as the menu was quite limited. Information about the environs/shopping etc would have been useful if held in the Lodge.

The hot tub was cold the first day and required us to clean it before using, then couldn’t use it due to to much Chlorine being put in, reported this but advised simply to wait until it had subsided which was less than ideal with our young grandson. The cleaning of the house left something to be desired, we hoovered the floors on arrival as the kitchen area was covered in dog hairs from previous occupants I assume. Kitchen is lacking on some basics essentials such as decent frying pans, measuring jugs and lots of little things needed for cooking. One major thing missing was plastic cups or glasses for the hot tub? Surely from a safely point of view it a must? Overall the place is very nice but in need of some attention, leaking conservatory roof, conservatory door locks impossible to use, windows leaking water everywhere. Mould around the windows and curtains etc which was a worry with our young grandson around. I think the house has an issue with water pressure as showers would run hot/cold when ever other taps run etc. Overall a really nice place which just needs some attention to the detail to make it so much better.

From the start, the collection of the keys from the hotel ensured a wonderful welcome to the break. The hotel staff showed you around and how to use the remotes for the blinds and fire. Lovely spacious rooms with fantastic ensuite and main bathroom facilities - including coloured lights, jacuzzi bath and complimentary toiletries! The kitchen was high spec with a lovely American style fridge freezer with cold water and ice cubes on demand. Breakfast bar was a great start to the day. Bread, milk, eggs, biscuits, tea, coffee and sugar made up the welcome basket. The dining room was laid ready for your first meal! Two lounges, both with TVs, ensured plenty of space to sit and relax and then there was the conservatory which even in October was beautifully warm. The bedrooms had plenty of storage space and a TV for each of them. Outside there was a beautiful garden with a fantastic hot tub for relaxing after a day of sightseeing! The garden summer house was gorgeous with settee, cushions, fairy lights in the ceiling and a heater to allow you to sit out even when the weather was a little inclement. Plenty of great tourist attractions in this area; Raby Castle, Mount Grace Priory, Walworth Birds of Prey Centre, Durham Cathedral and Castle, Beamish, High Force Falls and Barnard Castle to name a few. Walworth Castle Hotel (where you pick the keys up) is really pretty and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. Plenty of eating options at the Castle hotel; wonderful afternoon teas in the lounge (sandwiches, sausage rolls, scones and cakes - favourite cake was the miniature Battenburg!), breakfast, lunches and dinners in the Restaurant. We booked an evening meal and ate it in the Tower library which was a lovely experience with very high quality and beautifully presented food! They even showed us around their dungeons! All in all could not fault this Lodge since it was a lovely presented cottage and a fantastic restful break. The only downside - we had only booked one week!!
