“We had a fantastic stay at this beautiful cottage.”

It was spotlessly clean when we arrived and the kitchen was very well-equipped. The hot-tub was a real bonus. Great location for some lovely walks in the countryside. I would highly recommend and hope to stay again soon.

“Brilliant stay at a lovely cottage.”

Hosts helpful and welcoming. Great base to explorer the local area - within an hour (or so) you have everything from Ullswater to Hamsterley Forest to High Force and more. Few too many flies, but it's right next to a farm so I guess that's par for the course...!

“Stables cottage was beautiful and had everything we needed.”

It is finished to an excellent standard and is the best holiday cottage we have stayed in, in the UK. It was thoroughly cleaned as was the hot tub. The hot tub was a novel facility for us adults and our two children, who loved it. The grounds and area are beautiful and peaceful. These included a private court yard, use of large garden and private play area. Our children also loved collecting the eggs from the chickens on a morning. Ruth was lovely and an excellent host and lives next door to the cottage, so is on hand for any issues. We would love to return for a future family holiday. There is so much to do in the area that we have planned to return in the near future to visit further sites and attractions.

“Beautiful, clean and comfortable cottage!”

Had everything we needed plus more, especially with having two children. The playground in the garden was just fabulous for our children and they loved looking out at the sheep every morning! Hot tub was lovely and was cleaned daily for us. We managed to visit some amazing places, including high and low force waterfalls, Raby Castle and Hamsterley Forrest! Thank you so much for everything

“Want for nothing!”

A very comfortable, well equipped, warm (underfloor heating) cottage. Everything we needed was there. Within easy reach of Barnard Castle where there was a large supermarket & lots of individual shops & a weekly market. Very close to Bowes Castle if weather is inclement. Within easy reach of beautiful countryside & attractive towns & villages. An excellent base, with friendly helpful owners.

“Great family accomadation”

This cottage was really welcoming, nicely furnish and well equipped. The additoonal bonus of the extensive outdoor play area was a real hit with our 3 year old.

The property

Situated on a former farm near the village of Whorlton, 3 miles from Barnard Castle, Stables Cottage is an imaginative conversion of an old stone stable.

Care has been taken to convert the building to ensure a high quality holiday cottage, retaining original features and character throughout.

Picture windows offer wonderful views over the lower reaches of the Teesdale valley, there is underfloor heating throughout, and guests can relax in the small private courtyard before dipping into the bubbling hot tub to soak up the picturesque surroundings.

With the owners on hand to ensure a warm and comfortable stay, and an outdoor play area for children, this property is an ideal Whorlton cottage for a family holiday exploring nearby Teesdale, Durham and the Yorkshire Dales.

To the rear is open farmland with a bridleway accessible from the cottage, and there is much walking in the area.

Visit Raby Castle, High Force, the National Railway Museum Shildon, or enjoy the tea rooms, shops and restaurants in Barnard Castle, which also houses a leisure centre with swimming pool, gym, soft play area and indoor climbing wall for the more energetic.

The pretty Teesdale village of Whorlton has always been closely associated with the fortunes of nearby Raby Castle and its owners. The Castle (open to the public) is one of the grandest in England. Enlarged and beautified over the centuries, the medieval heart remains, and a walled garden and 200 acre deer park add to the splendour. The popular market town of Barnard Castle is only 3 miles away, with its own Norman castle plus a wide range of shops, renowned antiques quarter, tea rooms, pubs and restaurants. The Bowes Museum, High Force and Shildon Railway museum are only a short drive, and walkers will enjoy the many trails around Teesdale.
