  • "Lovely comfy cosy cottage, with everything you need."

Lovely and clean, extremely quiet, slept like a log. The only minus is the approach road, gives your bones a good workout but a small price to pay for such a tranquil setting. Met Graham the owner's son, who was friendly and helpful in his local knowledge. Hope to visit again

We stayed for a whole month in this dear to our hearts little cottage , it will always hold special memories for us , very chilled lovely walks , great location to drive over the stunning roads around the north Pennines, lovely and quiet away from the modern hustle and bustle of this mad world we all have to endure , the owners are lovely they leave you in peace, but are always there for a kind cheerful chat , a welcoming bottle of milk in the fridge and plenty of coffee was much appreciated after a long drive to get there,

  • "Access road, really bad."

3rd night double bed frame collapsed so on settee in middle of the night. That was fixed by farmers son. 4th day 5pm notified of a waterleak, water switched off . No water from 5pm until next day. Next day the farmer managed to repair, same afternoon shower over the bath broken valve so no shower or bath. Kitchen, poor frying pan lost all of its non stick. No where to put groceries just had to be left on the bench. No breadbin either. Internet only in sitting room and kept going off. I left the property on Friday morning instead of Saturday as my daughter was fed up with the whole set up. Mike and his son were very nice people they did their best even spending hours filling the pot holes in the access road but I didnt want to go in and out more than once a day, its truly horrendous on entry going down the bank even when filled in. My experience of the week I cant recommend. I,ll spend more time asking around in future.

  • "The cottage was very cosy and comfortable, and had everything we needed."

The patio at the front of the cottage was lovely. Very peaceful with good views over the countryside, and a sunny spot to sit when the sun was shining. The owner was very friendly and helpful. We found some lovely local walks and days out, including Low Barns nature reserve which has a nice walk around a lake and lots of bird life, and also has a little cafe. We would also recommend the deer park in Bishop Auckland, and tea and scones at the Fifteas Vintage Tea Room in Bishop Auckland, where they play 50s music and the waitresses wear 50s dresses.

Apart from one morning when it rained, much enjoyed having breakfast outside overlooking the fields. Friendly owners, a pleasure to chat with.

Really loved the large farmhouse kitchen & layout of the property. The owners were very friendly and helpful.

  • "Beautiful location, perfect for walking and biking."

Surrounded by wildlife - we especially loved the resident barn owl outside the kitchen window. My family are all over 6 foot and so they had to get used to ducking the beam in the kitchen. Owner was very friendly and helpful but left us to get on as we wished. Would recommend.

  • "We visited Wilton View Cottage on the first week we could travel and stay overnight as Covid 19 regulations were relaxed."

The week commencing 6th July. The whole experience from initial booking to returning home was excellent! Big thank you to Michael for the informative phone call prior to our arrival which illustrated his professionalism in his role as “host “ The directions were exact and the arrival procedures smooth. All covid related information was relayed well. We felt completely safe. The cottage was lovely, bigger than we expected from the photos! Very comfortable bed, large bathroom, cosy lounge and the kitchen diner was huge and more than fulfilled all our needs. We were a couple and dog. We had mixed weather for July so only sat outside a couple of times but the peaceful position and beautiful setting of Edge Knoll farm just made the holiday. Ideally positioned for trips to Durham ,Richmond and Barnard Castle you can’t go wrong. We walked a couple of times up to the pub in Hamsterley and sat outside with our dog . Many beautiful walks from the cottage in all directions. We explored villages along both the Wear and the Tees Valley and again found some enjoyable walks. Would have no hesitation in recommending here for a holiday. Thank you Michael

  • "Great retreat."

Very peaceful location. Michael was a formidable host, who helped me at every step when required, but never overbearing. The pictures don't do the size justice. 2 double rooms, a large living room, proper bathroom and huge kitchen. Everything was just spot on for me.

  • "The photos, whilst accurate, didn't really do justice to the property, which was lighter and more comfortable, in reality, than we expected (and it already looked good enough to want to stay there, or we wouldn't have booked it!"

). The hosts were friendly and keen to make us feel welcome without being over solicitous. The only thing we both remarked on was that a few teabags, a pint of two of milk, a few more dishwasher tabs and some hand soap would have been nice. I have no doubt that if we'd asked for it, it would all have been forthcoming, but it is always even more lovely if those things are already thought of, and provided on arrival. Both the courtyard garden and the terrace were particualrly enjoyable sun traps and there was a wealth of butterfly life on the white buddleia, which was lovely to see.

  • "As a family of three (2 adults and an energetic toddler) with a dog, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Witton View Cottage and would love to have stayed longer than just a week."

The cottage is in a beautiful, quiet setting but within easy reach of numerous sights and areas of interest as well as local shops and supermarkets. The accomodation is very spacious and comfortable and had everything we needed (including cot, highchair, and washing machine etc). Although a little bumpy, we had no issues using the road leading to the cottage in our non 4x4 car. We highly recommend this as a place to stay if you are looking for somewhere to stay in the area and in close reach of the Pennines. The owner, Michael, is very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the local area and was able to provide us with some great suggestions of places to visit.

About the location

HAMSTERLEY

Barnard Castle 8 miles.

The village of Hamsterley sits on the brow of a hill between Teesdale and Weardale, on the edge of the North Pennines. Boasting an old village pub, where basic provisions can be purchased, the village is just two miles from Hamsterley Forest, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which covers 2000 hectares of mixed woodland and has an abundance of wildlife. The Forest Visitor Centre, complete with tea rooms, provides visitors with a wealth of information on the many activities available in the forest, including splendid walking, cycling and horse riding trails to suit all levels of expertise. Cycling enthusiasts will be well catered for with the Hamsterley Forest mountain bike downhill trail which has some of the steepest slopes in the UK, together with miles of cross country routes. The forest runs alongside the Bedburn Beck for four miles, providing access to grassy picnic sites and a play area for children, and also stages a wide range of events and activities every summer, from wildlife watches to theatre performances, and the Dark Skies Events are coming to the forest, with introductions to astronomy from trained instructors. With Raby Castle nearby and the delightful market town of Barnard Castle, with its medieval castle ruins and delightful cobbled streets, just 8 miles away, this is an ideal holiday location. The ancient cathedral city of Durham is also close by and is host to a number of events throughout the year so it is well worth checking what you can see while you are in the area.
