  • "We had a lovely stay at Blackburn cottage barn."

Great location for walking and biking from the doorstep, secure little garden for the dog, comfy beds, warm and cosy place to relax. The cottage had everything we needed. Surrounded by lots of wildlife. Although a lovely little place, it does need some TLC and a bit of time spending on it eg bathroom upstairs lights not working so had to keep the hall light on at night, husband had to change some bulbs in the kitchen as half the lights not working.

  • "Arrived to dirty sofa and chair in lounge."

Upstairs toilet lights not working. We heard a crashing noise and discovered the heater, the owner had described as faulty prior to visit, had literally fallen off the wall in the bedroom We had two electrician visits and I had to text owner several times. This property needs some TLC.Some of the kitchen equipment needs replacing-the saucepans and frying pan are very battered. Such a shame. We have visited the property several times because of the location. But this is second time we have had to act as caretakers on our paid for holiday.

  • "The cottage is located in a beautiful peaceful setting, surrounded by nature but also close enough to lots of local days out and activities for all the family."

The children loved watching the rabbits from the window and it is in an ideal spot for walking, running and cycling. The property provides almost everything you need for your holiday and the beds were really comfortable but there were just a few small improvements which would take it from good to excellent. When we arrived, there was less than half a toilet roll in the cottage, which for a property that can sleep 6 and isn't close to a shop, isn't really suitable. Thankfully we had read some other reviews which mentioned this and had taken some with us. There's a washing machine, but no powder or tablets, and a dishwasher which also had no tablets, and providing these little extras would make such a difference. We also found the bathroom extractor fan wasn't working, the light above the cooker and under counter lights weren't working, and throughout the stay there was a faint smell of drains, which we assume is from the septic tank. Whilst these things wouldn't prevent us from staying again, they would be welcome improvements that would make the property even more welcoming.

  • "The cottage was lovely."

Great layout and position, fab views all round and spectacular sunrises and sunsets. It was warm and comfortable and just what we needed this time. There are a few small signs of wear and tear which are to be expected and the housekeeper is aware of these seeming to be on the case for remedying. Nothing that diminished our enjoyment. The surrounding area is lovely. Our walk to Hamsterley and back was a great day out. Wildlife fantastic - lots of grouse and pheasants, rabbits, a fox and moles all seen in some capacity. The locals at Hamsterley advised of more rarer wildlife including adders, toads and a specific mouse! Some farming practices in the area seemed strange to us city folk but when googled made a little more sense. Time without WiFi was refreshing with tree climbing, sword(stick) fighting, twister and monopoly entertaining the kids (and adults) well. A bird feeder would be a fab addition for the nature fans. We found bird seed under the sink and a chaffinch and wren joined us when we put some out. Totally recommend this cottage for a rest and escape.

  • "Lovely cottage and very well placed for some good walking."

Very quiet place. Just take some essentials when you go because we had to buy washing liquid/ toilet rolls/hand wash/ bin liners/ oven trays. There's a slight leak in the hall way overhead windows which the owner is aware of. But its nothing major. In all its a great place and we will be going back at some point

  • "We had a great week at Blackburn Cottage Barn, the location is fairly remote which is exactly what we wanted, and we had fun exploring the local area."

There are lots of nice walks from the property and we particularly liked a walk back from Hamsterley through the forest. The property itself was great for our needs, although it would have been even better if toilet roll, soap and bin bags had been provided. However, it was good value for the price.

  • "Lovely property with gorgeous scenery."

Good facilities in the cottage, we felt very at home. Nice little enclosed garden which was safe for our dog. A little tip, the open fields to the left and right of the public footpath evidently aren't actually for public use (farmer will quickly tell you and move you along), counter intuitively you can walk through their gates and into the fields with their sheep instead. Very pretty scenery on that walk. We had a great break here even in the heatwave. A lovely breeze kept us nice and cool.

  • "Overall, we had a great stay at Blackburn Cottage Barn."

A great 'out of the way' location and perfectly positioned for some lovely country side walks. Take an OS map as there are plenty of footpaths, byways etc. On first inspection the cottage barn appears clean but on closer inspection it's lacking a bit of attention to detail. There were food stains down the wall in the kitchen, finger prints on the windows and the oven needs a good deep clean by a professional. Anything broken or below standard should be disposed of right away (broken coat stand or dirty, stained place mats). The cottage barn was adequately clean but the oven did make me squirm a bit! 99% of the barn is perfectly clean, but when you're paying to stay somewhere you expect it to be spotless, particularly the kitchen. The beds were comfortable, as was all of the furniture and it was super cosy in the evenings. Radiator temperature was set perfectly, shower was great as is the really deep bath. It's got great views from all windows of the surrounding countryside and if you go outside at night you get a great view of the stars. I would definitley stay again and in no way is this review meant to put people off of staying at this brilliant property! If you arrive at night, bring a torch with you as there aren't any street lights etc.

Seated in a comfy armchair, I sometimes forgot to read on in my novel and watched the beautiful scenery instead. The cottage is very well-equipped, and the kitchen is a fantastic place to share a meal. All rooms have window seats; there was a competition about them. You can hike from the cottage through beautiful moors between sheep and cattle. But you can also reach a lot of sights within an hour or so: Hadrian's wall, Durham, the North Pennines, Weardale Railway, Beamish. The only downside is that you need a car, but this is clear from the listing.
