  • "A very warm and cosy little cottage for a winter stay."

The compact kitchen is very well equipped and the welcome pack was lovely, including dog treats! The open fire added a nice bit of atmosphere to the place too! The bedroom and bathroom were beautiful and comfortable. The cottage is right in the heart of the village, close to shops and pubs. The park and river walks are a few minutes walk away too. A few minutes walk uphill gets you a fantastic panoramic view of the dale. We chose not to move our car, once we found a free parking spot just up the road. Unloading the car needed to be quick outside the property as there is nowhere close to pull over and unpack, but it didn't cause too much of a problem for us.

well equipped. It is just off the High Street, so easy for shopping, and also close to wonderful scenery for the walkers, and close to Ripon and Harrogate for the shoppers! As I like to sleep with the bedroom door open, the only - tiny - niggle was the noisy boiler, which clicked on regularly throughout the night.

However, it is rather off-putting on arriving to be hit by a strong smell of cigarette smoke. I understand this comes from a neighbouring house and can be somewhat mitigated by the air purifier and having the backdoor open but nevertheless not pleasant.

  • "This is a lovely and well thought out renovation of a period cottage."

It has all you need for your stay, and still keeps all the character of an old workman's cottage. The cottage is warm and cosy even though temperatures dropped to - 2 on one night. We didn't use the open fire, we were warm enough, but all you need for it is supplied. The cottage is right in the middle of the town and near to shops and pubs, with super quality food and drink. The only issue we had was that there is no private parking, so public carparks need to be used, which although cheap would not suit everybody.

Thank you so much for your feedback. And I'm glad you found the cottage cosy! I understand your point about the car parks. I usually find a space a little bit further up the road to park. and there is actually a free car park on Park Road (kind of at the back of the cottage). There are often - but not always - spaces there. I do hope the issue didn't spoil your stay. Property Owner

  • "Lovely cottage."

Fully equipped with everything you need. It was perfect for what we needed. Only one problem, sadly the smell of smoke coming through from next door spoiled it a little. The owner has tried to combat it with an anti tobacco candle and air fresheners but it can get quite strong. The beams must go right through the properties and the gaps around it let the smoke in. If you can put up with that its a perfect place to stay with fabulous surroundings and plenty of things to do

Hello Allison. Thank you for your feedback and your constructive comment about the smell of smoke. I have the chimney swept regularly but as you say sometimes the smell of smoke persists. I will definitely see if there are any gaps around the beams that could be blocked off! Katherine Property Owner

  • "I have two practical points that I think any dog owners should be aware of before deciding whether to take their dog away with them when considering Winn Cottage."

Firstly I would not recommend taking a large breed of dog to Winn cottage e.g. a big: labrador, retriever, full size poodle, alsatian etc. This is because the downstairs floorspace and the outdoor 'yard-space' is very limited. The outdoor space is also very limited and is unsecured/not contained. The available property pictures do not show this very well but there is a 1-2m drop immediately behind the small outside rear wall. There is no rear access or way up to this back yard from the gated alleyway one door down from the cottage after the corner sweetshop and so the back yard can only be accessed by entering through the front door. I have a springer spaniel and he always gets filthy after a walk so there is no other option but to take your dog straight through the cottage and out the back if he/she needs cleaning up. If you need to you can tether/tie your dog's lead to the double wooden seat by the back door. Second there is no reserved car parking space for this property directly adjacent. So you will need to hope there is a space on the road about 100m further up Church road. True there are several other possible places to park either on road or off within Pateley village, or to use one of the cheap paying spaces available elsewhere but if you are not walking from the front door and venture further away to walk your dog be mindful that you may not get a free parking space this close to the Cottage when you come back from your day out /walking the dog. When I stayed there the locals and local tradespeople know all this and will arrive early park up and often do not move their cars/vans all day/week. None of these are reasons not book Winn Cottage, because the cottage is lovely and in a great location. Plus there is a cracking farm butcher's shop at the end of the road which I frequented regularly. I really enjoyed my stay at the cottage but mostly walked out of the village each day so I only needed to move my car once the entire week.

Thank you for your helpful feedback. In particular your comment about the lack of access round the back is useful, because there is in fact a right of way for the cottage past the adjoining cottage, and I'm sorry this wasn't clear - I will make it clear to future guests. Property Owner

  • "I have fallen in love with Winn Cottage!"

Everything I needed for my week had been provided including a raft of brochures on what the local area had to offer (lots as it turns out-too much for just one week!). To seal the deal I'd been left a basket of goodies including wine and real coffee! Also, thoughtfully, in the fridge a bottle of fresh milk. As I was staying on my own I didn't want to be rattling around like a pea in a box so Winn Cottage was just perfect. An ideal base to come back to after a day of spending time exploring the area with my family (finally time together!). There's every utensil imaginable in the very well stocked kitchen. Fan assisted oven too (new to me but what a difference it makes!). My only minor concern prior to arriving was that there was no mention in the brief 'about Winn Cottage' information about a microwave or a freezer...I shouldn't have worried as both were present, albeit the freezer was in fact a freezer compartment in the fridge but perfectly adequate for my needs. I've been home one night now and I really do miss what had become, well, a home from home! It's in a fantastic location-just off beautiful Pateley Bridge High Street, but you'd never know it at night when you're in bed as it's so wonderfully quiet. The curtains keep out the light long after the sun's come up. Blissful! Oh and the bed...lush, so, so soft bed linen! I got the best nights of sleep I have had in an age. With lots of original features, beams, fireplaces -downstairs and up- the cottage retains its old world character whilst providing all you could need for a 21st century holiday. I loved the splashes of colour in the front room and kitchen and then the peaceful palette of the bedroom and bathroom. I could write so much about Winn Cottage without writing any negative points at all! I guess the outside space is very small and not private, although as I live in a flat with no outside space I loved having even that small bit to sit, in the fresh air, at the beginning and end of my days. I would wholeheartedly recommend this beautifully quirky, charming cottage to friends and family. I would have stayed longer if I could have! Thanks so much to Katherine for letting me experience the full Winn Cottage experience - loved it! :)

  • "The listing could be a lot clearer about the fact that there is no parking near the property."

The property is only really small dog friendly and the tiny back yard is not enclosed, which meant that we had to put our dog on a lead and take her over the road at the front of the house to do her business between walks. It would have been better if the owner had switched the heating on for us the day before we arrived, the property was cold and due to combination of circumstances involving a switch being turned off by the engineer and the instructions for operating the boiler not being the best we ended up with central heating upstairs but none downstairs. Fortunately there was a small electric radiator and the open fire, but that little welcoming gesture would have saved a lot of trouble. The owner went out of her way to help us with the heating and overall it was a comfortable break.

Thank you for your feedback. We do state on the property details that there is roadside parking nearby and information regarding this is sent out to each guest before their arrival. It was unfortunate that there was a mix up with the heating not being set for your arrival, this is normally always the case and glad it didn't impact on your stay. Property Owner

There are some lovely shops in the village (make sure to check out the craft units in the Old Workhouse as they are not well publicised). Inexplicably, a number of interesting looking shops (arts, crafts, antiques etc) didn't open once in the time we were there! We had decent basic pub grub over the bridge at the Royal Oak and better quality but a more expensive evening meal at The Crown. The cottage is an old building yet has been equipped and furnished with pretty much everything that you would want or need. The stairs are steep and curve tightly but are manageable. The kitchen is small but everything is to hand. The living room has one small 2-seater and 2 arm-chairs. It is not the most comfortable. And for some reason the TV is fastened to the wall at the upper height of the wall so it is a bit of a strain on the neck to watch. Overall it is a characterful and comfortable cottage for a short stay. There is one negative to note. The owner's of this cottage have been badly let down by some previous visitors who must have ignored the No Smoking restriction. There was a very heavy and noticeable odour of cigarettes, especially in the living room and the soft furnishings on which you sat. It was quite nauseating. Sykes contacted the owner and their response was very good. But whoever hired this cottage and blatantly disregarded the rules acted very selfishly and shamefully.

Overall the cottage was clean and well kept, helpful instructions if needed, plenty of storage space for clothes which is always a bonus for those of us who find it impossible to travel light!!! As we were walking one massive bonus, although I'd already purchased one, was the OS map which is the first one we have come across in any cottage we've booked before, very thoughtful and more owners should take note. Pateley Bridge is a great centre with all the amenities you could require, very dog friendly, Scampi enjoyed the crack in the Crown and Royal Oak and especially the ladies (and cake!!) in The Coffee House located in King's Court. He also like to press his nose up against Kendall's window which is a must for any visitor. Plenty of good walks for those inclined, we did Brimham Rocks circular one day and then Bewerley heritage walk taking in Cold Stones Cut the next. For those who prefer a bit of retail therapy close enough to the bright lights of Harrogate. Winn Cottage is definitely on our list of cottages to return to in the future.

It is by far one of the best cottages we've stayed in in our last five years of "staycating" since we got our dog. The living room is cosy however if you like to spend your evenings watching tv then this might be the only shortcoming. The tv is in a bit of an awkward spot in relation to the sofa but does have loads of channels. The kitchen is very clever in its layout with loads of utensils and every pot, pan, plate you could need. The bedroom is well furnished and comfortable and there is a good central heating system if you don't want to use the log burner. The bathroom is clean and like the rest of the cottage isn't lacking in anything - bath, shower, good water pressure etc. We usually bring loads of food with us on holiday just in case we can't find a decent butchers etc but this really wasn't needed here. Pately Bridge has a fantastic and welcoming High Street with everything you need to eat at home as well as a great choice of pubs and restaurants if you prefer to eat out. A truly perfect cottage in my opinion, I wouldn't hesitate in recommending and I can't wait to go again.
