  • "Mark and Kath were both lovely people providing a warm welcome to their property."

However, the directions provided to the property need revisiting, as they weren't as accurate as necessary and we drove past the property twice before eventually finding it with the owner's help on the phone. Also the property name on the wall was obscured, being overgrown with vegetation, which needed cutting back. From the property description, we had not picked up that the cottage was an annexe to the main farm building. There was a window in the lounge and main bedroom that directly faced the main house and we kept these blinds drawn as we felt the windows made you feel overlooked. Overall, the property was clean and well presented, but equipment, especially in the kitchen, was of a more basic standard than we would normally choose. The property was halfway up a steep hill and it was a very exposed and windy location.

Thank you for your feedback. We hope that it will not deter future guests from booking our cottage and would like to respond to the comments that you made.I have contacted Sykes regarding improving the directions and Mark has cut the long grass that was obscuring the house sign. We are always available to help our guests if they are unable to find the property. The description on Sykes website clearly states that the cottage is attached to the owner's farmhouse. There is a small window in the lounge that looks on to our house, but we keep the blinds closed in that room and rarely use it when we have guests staying in the cottage. There are two other large windows in the lounge that have beautiful views of the moor and surrounding countryside. There is a small window in the bedroom that looks on to an enclosed garden, not into our house. There is also a large bedroom window with views of our fields and the moor beyond. The equipment in the cottage is far from basic and includes high quality furnishings such as a luxury super king size Staples bed, a new DFS reclining leather chair and matching sofa and 32 inch flat screen smart TV.The kitchen is well equipped and we recently added a Tassimo coffee machine. We also supply lots of extras such as dishwasher and washing machine tablets, Tassimo pods, shampoo, hand soap, eggs, milk, flowers, home baking etc on arrival. Many of our guests have complemented us on the high standard of equipment and furnishings, and the little extras that we provide The property is indeed on a high hill, which is why it has such beautiful views. It is unfortunate that the wind spoiled your stay but the weather is the one thing we can not control. Best wishes Kath and Mark Property Owner

  • "This cottage is truly special with everything we could have wanted and more!"

Kath & Mark made us feel so welcome and have achieved the highest attention to detail you always hope to find, but rarely do...from the fresh flowers in the lovely spacious living room to the fresh milk, tea, coffee & cookies as well as delicious free range eggs in the kitchen, there is everything you could possibly want. The cottage is filled with light & has large windows in every room so you can enjoy breath taking views of the surrounding countryside from every aspect - it is in a magical spot away from it all but with the advantage of being close to all local amenities (good pubs with good food!), & also near enough to all the main tourist attractions in the area. If walking is your thing there are some stunning walks literally from the door step, but if you prefer to chill out & relax, you could use the outdoor furniture & comfy cushions provided to simply while away your holiday soaking up the peace & tranquility (Kath's beautiful white ponies in the surrounding fields & stables raise this place to another level of loveliness!)...Kath & Mark are terrific hosts & always available should you need anything at all, but are happy to leave you in total peace to enjoy your holiday, which is exactly what we did! One of our best ever holidays & a cottage that we can highly recommend.

About the location

COWLING

Skipton 7 miles.

The ancient village of Cowling sits across a hillside in the Pennine Hills, just seven miles from the market town of Skipton. A thriving village, built along a main high street with stone-built, terraced houses set alongside the mills of a bygone age. The village was once sparsely populated, the bulk of the population living in Ickornshaw and Middleton, and before that on Cowling Hill, close to water sources they depended on, and the main roads of the day - now used as back roads by locals to avoid the modern day traffic. In the early days, agriculture was the main occupation, with corn being grown and ground within the village. When canal transport boomed, corn became cheaper to buy from elsewhere and so the mills in Cowling turned from grinding corn to weaving during the Industrial Revolution. The village inn was once part of a farmhouse on Cowling Hill, but was sold as changes to the structure of the village began. The son of the landlord later opened the Bay Horse Hotel on the new road, which still stands as a main feature of village life. The nearby Quaker village of Lothersdale was, at one time, home to Charlotte Bronte who modelled Gateshead Hall in Jane Eyre on Stone Gappe House where she was governess. Today many visitors passing through the village are walkers, on their way along the Pennine Way on the stretch from Cowling to Gargrave. There's the large retail outlet of Boundary Mills, just six miles away, a must for lovers of shoping, and Skipton, known as 'The Gateway to the Dales' is nearby. Skipton is a lovely old market town with much to interest the enthusiastic visitor, boasting an ancient castle open to the public, a beautiful old parish church and a colourful market occupying the cobbled setts each side of the high street. In 2008 the Academy of Urbanism voted Skipton High Street the best shopping spot in Britain, and The Copper Dragon Brewery, opened in 2002 is highly rated in the CAMRA listings. Steam railways with regular excursions are available at Embsay and Bolton Abbey, and the Leeds to Liverpool Canal passes through Skipton with the one mile long Foulridge Tunnel and the 5-rise locks at Bingley within a short distance away. In 2014 the area hosted the first leg of the Tour De France, bringing in many visitors from far and wide to this wonderful area.
