  • "Orchard Cottage is very pretty, extremely quiet, super warm and cosy."

It has every facility you could possibly need and spoilt with lovely welcome treats. Location is perfect for exploring the area, we walked to Jervaulx Abbey most days, visited Fountain Abbey/Studley Water Gardens, Aysgarth and Harmby Waterfalls, Masham and Leyburn. Dave the horse is magnificent, so friendly! Thank you so much, we will definitely recommend you. Gail and Mark.

This was our second visit this year and we are already looking forward to going back in a few months time. We needed some extra help due to last minute changes during our stay, and Sophie helped us out without a moment’s hesitation. Orchard Cottage is the best furnished and cleanest property we have ever been to in more than 40 years of self catering, and nice touches of lovely flowers, milk, wine and biscuits on arrival made us feel really welcome. All in all we had a wonderful week and can’t wait to go back again.

We appreciated the call before our arrival, asking about the bed arrangements. Everywhere was clean on arrival, and the welcome gifts were a lovely touch. The cottage was well equipped, and we managed to cook lots of meals across the week. We also appreciated the added touches like the speaker- as we forgot ours! The beds were comfortable, with lovely linen too. The cottage is situated in a beautiful location, perfect! The owners were very friendly. • "Orchard Cottage was extremely clean and well cared for."

Owners Sophie and Paddy were very helpful in their responses to our pre-visit enquiries relating to online food shopping deliveries and were keen to ensure that we had an enjoyable holiday without any issues. The fantastic weather we enjoyed saw temperatures exceed 96F in the shade and the provision of electric fans in the bedrooms was most appreciated. We did struggle a little with the limited capacity of the under counter fridge and the worktop freezer to accommodate the weeks food provisions for six and a second fridge/freezer would have been perfect. The sofa in the tv room was a bed/settee, the cushions on which had lost much of their support/comfort. This was not however a problem as far as our two grand children were concerned as this was where they spent much of their leisure time when not lusting after Sophie’s delightful horse Dave or friendly terrier who desperately tried to join our family barbecue. We had a lovely time and will happily rebook to return next year circumstances willing.

We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay. Thank you for your feedback. We will look into replacing the sofa in the TV room and we look forward to seeing you again. Best wishes, Sophie and Paddy Property Owner

It is in a very rural and quiet setting which suited us fine. The hosts were very welcoming and were very helpful and considerate. The cottage is modern, well equipped and comfortable and there was plenty of room for the two of us. The WiFi worked well; we just had to remember to go upstairs or outside to use our mobile network, but that's to be expected in the middle of the countryside. The garden was small but lovely and secluded and we enjoyed sitting outside in the sunshine listening to the bees and watching the birdlife. Speaking of which, the area is great for wildlife and walking, but you can be in Leyburn in about 15 minutes. The River Ure is close by, Jervaulx Abbey is within walking distance and Brymore Ice Cream Parlour is a tempting stop on the way home from a day trip out! We'd definitely go back again.

  • "We had a lovely stay and would definitely return."

Dave the horse was a real character and made us love him instantly! Lovely peaceful location and Jervaulx Abbey a nice walk from the doorstep. We saw lots of hares on the hillside early one morning which were amazing to watch. The only down side was the TV - the reception was intermittent and there weren’t many channels available. No BBC at all. However there is Netflix and lots of DVDs available.

We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay. We're sorry that you had problems with the TV channels. The Bilsdale mast was struck by lightning several months ago and has caused issues in this area. Recent work on the mast has upset the channels again so we have arranged for Scotts Electrics from Bedale to retune the channels to rectify the problem. We look forward to seeing you again soon. Beautifully comfy beds with crisp white linen and a peaceful location. The house has a new water system too with oodles of hot water bursting out of the shower which was a pleasure! We enjoyed evenings by the log burner in the tranquil sitting room investigating the supply of family games at the house. On several evenings we ate in and the kitchen was very nicely set up to enjoy cooking in. Dave the horse made an appearance at the kitchen window now and again! Sadly a little too cold to use the BBQ which was set up ready to go. Fabulous pub restaurant recommendations in the welcome note. We enjoyed the terrace at The White Bear in Masham and the yummy food at The Blue Lion in East Witton. The walks from the property were superb and also recommended in the welcome note which was super useful. Bolton Caste, Fountains Abbey, The Forbidden Corner and Aysgarth Falls within a 20/25min drive and fun days out with the kids. A super holiday location!

  • "Nice cottage in a very good location."

Living room is very comfortable. Kitchen is well equipped. Not 5 ticks by my experience but more like a 4. One problem we had was that the shower, as mentioned by previous guests, was very poor bordering on non functional and needs attention; hence the low rating on facilities. Some people may not have a problem with it but I wouldn’t re-book on that basis alone.

As of 8 April 2022 we have installed a Grant Vortex Utility Condensing Boiler with a sealed pressurised system. This means that the water pressure is equal, if not better to that which is supplied by the mains. We are very sorry that the shower did not meet people's expectations and we are pleased to be able to confirm that this has now been rectified. We very much look forwards to welcoming you back and we are grateful as always for your feedback. 8/04/2022 Property Owner

Ready for a good shower when we got home.

We are very sorry that the shower unit and mixer did not meet your expectations. Our water comes from a natural spring and therefore it does not have the same pressure as the mains. About the location

EAST WITTON

Middleham 3 miles; Leyburn 6 miles.

The pretty and ancient Wensleydale village of East Witton is situated in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, between Jervaulx Abbey and Middleham, the area famous for its race horse training. A traditional old village made up of stone-built cottages and farmhouses, with a wonderful village green running the entire length of the main high street. To the west of the village lies some of the most beautiful countryside in the Dales with the hidden gem of Coverdale, one of the most beautiful, but relatively one of the more isolated, of the Yorkshire Dales. Coverham at the eastern end of the dale is dominated by Middleham Moor, Penhill and Flamstone Pin. The village boasts an award-winning pub, The Blue Lion, a gourmet pub awarded The Good Pub Guide Inn of the Year 2014. The village which is catalogued in the Doomsday Book, was originally sited along what is now Lowthorpe, which leads to the old church (St Martin in the Field), and acquired a town charter in 1307. The Earl of Ailesbury, owner of the Jervaux Estate, rebuilt most of East Witton in the early 19th century, with the houses and gardens in the same places as they were in 1627 according to an old estate map. Jervaulx Abbey was founded in 1156 and was once a great Cistercian Monastery. The Abbey now stands as a charming and atmospheric ruin, open all year round for visitors, with lovely tea rooms. Middleham with its Norman Castle, famous racing stables and pretty old market square surrounded by delightful shops, pubs and restaurants, and the picturesque Aysgarth Falls, are just a short drive away. A superb base for a walking holiday, for enjoying the delights of Wensleydale, or for touring the Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors or the Lake District.
