  • "Cottage and owners were great, would highly recommend."

The back gate was damaged but Ellen and Neil came straight round and fixed the problem lovely friendly owners. The only downside was the main road which was really busy but you get used to it. Parking space a bit tight but everywhere is these day. Very clean and well equipped will be back

Thank you Kevin Sylvia and Sid. It was great to meet you and we would be very happy to welcome you back Property Owner

  • "The stairs needs a handrail they are very steep."

Parking is very tight not much room and there is a very busy road at front of property which we weren't aware of and my husband has mobility issues and crossing the road was a nightmare I wouldn't have booked if I had known about the road it should be in the details or spoilt the holiday also we couldn't sleep it was busy all night

  • "Excellent cottage, clean and very well equipped."

One drawback was parking space, which was an issue every day. Also local amenities were few and far between as the pub was closed and the chip shop was dreadful, however the local shop was really good. On the whole though, a good holiday cottage

Thanks for your feedback. I’m sorry to hear you struggled with the parking space. Unfortunately the pub opposite closed unexpectedly in the summer but has now reopened Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely stay, the cottage was immaculately clean, everything we needed and more."

The bed was the most comfortable we have ever slept in. Parking was tight but the kind lady next door moved her car while we got in.The Bay Horse across the road served excellent meals and the staff very friendly. My only recommendation would be a handrail on the stairs, Being of a certain age it would have been helpful.

  • "The cottage was well equipped and central to tourist attractions."

The Bay Horse pub across the road is great for good beer and food, the staff and landlord were all very friendly. Just one criticism the parking space at the rear of the cottage was quite small, we had to park on the side road.

  • "Grateful for the early access to the property."

House was very clean, main bedroom comfortable and for a mid terrace house a generous size. Kitchen was well made and modern, new Sky box and good wifi a nice addition. Off street parking wouldn’t suit a big vehicle but a 1 series was an ok if snug fit. Pub over the road doesn’t get rowdy after hours, food was good there. There are lots of lovely walks in every direction. Corner shop is well stocked and Crosshills has a good sized Co-op a short drive away

A large bedroom with loads of wardrobe space also a smaller bedroom with a double bed. The yard /garden was well enclosed and really safe for our dog . We would not hesitate to book again Thank you

  • "The accomodation was clean, cosy and comfortable, ideally located to explore the dales and surrounding area."

The only criticism would be that there was little or no room within the cupboards in the kitchen to store our own food essentials as there were a number of old food items and tinned food possibly left from previous guests.

  • "Had a lovely stay at Hemingway Cottage."

Very clean, cosy and comfortable, especially the bed in the main bedroom. Road noise didn't bother me and slept well after a days exploring the beautiful Dales and Lancashire countryside. Views from Lunds Tower behind the cottage are magnificent. Lots of places to visit around Colne, which has lovely parks for dog walks, and Skipton as well as shops in Crosshils.

Thank you for your feedback. It’s always nice to hear that people have enjoyed their stay and discovered new places Property Owner

Close to all the sites with easy access to the dales for hiking and sightseeing. Hemingway Cottage has everything that you need and a nice touch leaving some dog treats and dog bowl. Would definitely stop here again.

  • "Lovely cottage and very clean."

We had a lovely stay between Christmas and new year and went discovering the beautiful sights of the Yorkshire Dales. The downside is that the off road parking is on a very narrow back street, with raised ironworks and as we had a large vehicle could not park outside due to the other vehicles not being able to get past. This is also on a very busy road and even though it is a 30mph limit, cars, vans and lorries speed past and it is very very noisy throughout the day and all through the night. So not much rest was had. All in all, apart from this we enjoyed our break but feel that this information should be shared to others before booking.

  • "Hemmingway cottage is a lovely warm, clean, comfortable cottage."

A lot of thought has gone into the presentation of the rooms. Comfy furniture, beautiful bedding, bathroom and Kitchen look new. When we informed the owners our grandson of 11 months was joining us, a safety gate was provided without asking. A dog bowl and treats were also provided for our little dog. Pam and David Kent. The cottage would benefit from a handrail down the stairs and a couple more sauce pans. But a real find.

  • "The so called cottage was below expectations, not worth the£650 we paid the kitchen equipment was basic, one plastic jug,a small frying pan, and a pan with a loose handle,no bread knife or bread bin, only one key in back door so if there was a fire in the kitchen you couldn't get out, no bannister on the stairs, double bedroom only fit for one person with nowhere to put your clothes, big bedroom,no bedside lights, I have complained so Sykes who promised to get back to me about my complaint but nobody has."

they sent me an email saying the property was now cheaper, we couldn't sleep properly in the bed so we left on the Monday night, its the first time we have had a holiday with Sykes, but if this is the way they treat their customers it will be the last

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry to hear you didn’t feel able to stay for your full booking. We have made a number of changes since then: we have added a larger frying pan and a large stockpot, both being made of harder wearing materials. We are looking to put a handrail on the stairs shortly. There is a large box of knives including a bread knife and many others, which is kept in the crockery cupboard, out of the way of children for safety reasons. Due to the layout of the larger bedroom we do not have bedside lamps as this would cause safety issues with loose wires from the sockets on the opposite wall. What we do have is a bedroom lamp and tower fan next to the sockets, a a couple of steps from the bed, and likewise in the smaller bedroom. The storage in the large bedroom is extensive covering a whole wall and suitable for 4 guests. There are keys for both the front and back doors, ensuring safety of all in an emergency situation Property Owner

Nice touch supplying dog bowls, biscuits and poop bags. Not many facilities in the village but so close to everywhere with a car. Enjoyed a couple of sunny evenings in the garden.

  • "The cottage was nicely appointed, however there were things missing in the kitchen which we felt are necessary eg."

Pyrex bowl, grill handle, oven gloves, tongs. The description stated that dogs were allowed. While being dog friendly, we did not expect to find dog hairs in the bed nor on the soft furnishings in the lounge. As a result, we had to give antihistamines to our daughter as she is allergic to pet hair. The description stated the cottage was on a “main road in a village.” The traffic noise was horrendous continuing until about midnight, then starting at 5:30 am. Despite being a 30mph limit it was clear that drivers were not adhering to this. Shutting the windows had little effect and due to the hot weather made the rooms excessively hot. We felt like we had pitched up next to the M6! There wasn’t a quick way of controlling the heating as the thermostat did not appear to work. We turned it off on the boiler in the end. With a few extra touches with extra kitchen supplies and some advance notice about the road noise, this cottage could be really comfortable.

About the location

COWLING

Skipton 7 miles.

The ancient village of Cowling sits across a hillside in the Pennine Hills, just seven miles from the market town of Skipton. A thriving village, built along a main high street with stone-built, terraced houses set alongside the mills of a bygone age. The village was once sparsely populated, the bulk of the population living in Ickornshaw and Middleton, and before that on Cowling Hill, close to water sources they depended on, and the main roads of the day - now used as back roads by locals to avoid the modern day traffic. In the early days, agriculture was the main occupation, with corn being grown and ground within the village. When canal transport boomed, corn became cheaper to buy from elsewhere and so the mills in Cowling turned from grinding corn to weaving during the Industrial Revolution. The village inn was once part of a farmhouse on Cowling Hill, but was sold as changes to the structure of the village began. The son of the landlord later opened the Bay Horse Hotel on the new road, which still stands as a main feature of village life. The nearby Quaker village of Lothersdale was, at one time, home to Charlotte Bronte who modelled Gateshead Hall in Jane Eyre on Stone Gappe House where she was governess. Today many visitors passing through the village are walkers, on their way along the Pennine Way on the stretch from Cowling to Gargrave. There's the large retail outlet of Boundary Mills, just six miles away, a must for lovers of shoping, and Skipton, known as 'The Gateway to the Dales' is nearby. Skipton is a lovely old market town with much to interest the enthusiastic visitor, boasting an ancient castle open to the public, a beautiful old parish church and a colourful market occupying the cobbled setts each side of the high street. In 2008 the Academy of Urbanism voted Skipton High Street the best shopping spot in Britain, and The Copper Dragon Brewery, opened in 2002 is highly rated in the CAMRA listings. Steam railways with regular excursions are available at Embsay and Bolton Abbey, and the Leeds to Liverpool Canal passes through Skipton with the one mile long Foulridge Tunnel and the 5-rise locks at Bingley within a short distance away. In 2014 the area hosted the first leg of the Tour De France, bringing in many visitors from far and wide to this wonderful area.
