  • "Stunning property, Mark and Joanne the owners we're equally helpful and always there if we needed anything."

We hire group houses pretty much every year over the new year period, honestly the best one yet. Truly beautiful property in beautiful surroundings. Really close to Hebden Bridge, bus stop literally right at the end of the driveway with hourly busses right into the village so highly recommend doing that if you want a drink, the other way goes into Keighley which we only went to to do a food shop but apparently there's load to do there too. Internet and mobile service weren't super fast, but we had no problem streaming films/TV so long as everyone else wasn't on the wifi. Most of the houses we've stayed at have the same problem when theres load of us all on the internet at once though so it's not anything we were fussed about to be honest. Bond was also returned in full on the same day so no issues there. Mark may aswell have kept hold of the deposit because we'll deffo be back..!

All the bedrooms were beautiful, beds very comfortable. We used the hot tub each day, it really was delightful, robes, towels and flip flops are provided. The lounge is comfortable and cosy, we used the log burner with the logs provided and we asked Mark for more logs which he provided for a small charge, nothing was too much trouble. We would definitely recommend The Retreat, it is a beautiful place to stay with utterly wonderful views .

  • "The property itself was lovely, however, ten minutes before leaving we were contacted by Mark (the owner) claiming we had damaged the hot tub two nights previously."

It was not clear to us why Mark did not discuss this directly with us at the time. Mark claimed that we had broken a piece off the hot tub and that this would cost £500 but that he was willing to reduce this to £250. I discussed with the group who confirmed they had not broken the hot tub piece and we were luckily able to provide time-stamped photos showing that this piece was missing on our arrival. We assumed this would be the end of it, however, Mark refused to accept these photos and over the next few days, we were contacted repeatedly by Mark over the phone, at 10pm at night as he continued to push his narrative that this was our fault and try to get us to accept the blame and pay the fee (despite the photos). Mark suggested the only solution was to go to court if we did not pay the money and he suggested we could not leave a negative review in light of the fact the property was clean. In addition to the above, we were told we would be charged for four broken glasses in the property itself (which would be covered under ordinary wear and tear in all other properties we have stayed in - of which there have been many). It's a shame as the property itself was lovely, however, we would not stay at the Retreat or any other property owned by Mark again.

What an absolutely stunning property set in the beautiful countryside with stunning views! The property had so much character, was immaculate, and well-equipped and every thing had been thought of in advance from towels on the (very comfy) beds, to hairdryers in the rooms, to the hot tub cleaned, filled and ready to go. Mark greeted us upon arrival and explained everything to us, and even put our grocery delivery away for us before we arrived. We even got a little welcome package too - the attention to detail was just amazing. Mark and Jo were on hand throughout the weekend for anything we needed, just via a simple text, and communication prior to our arrival was fantastic too. I'll certainly be booking again in the future, if we have another big family get together.

The location is just stunning - we loved watching the sun set over the hills and the views across the peaceful fields from every window. The house was spotlessly clean, nicely decorated and comfortable, with plenty of room for us all around the dining table. The kitchen is big and well-equipped for cooking up a storm and we made great use of the hot tub and garden bar (and fluffy dressing gowns!). There are plenty of nice walks from the door or it's a short bus/drive to Hebden Bridge or Oxenhope. The owners were kind and friendly - Jo was always ready to help with anything we needed but otherwise left us to enoy ourselves. Only minor issue is that the internet connection was a bit slow, but still useable and this didn't impact our stay much. In short, The Retreat is a great spot to relax and get away from it all and we'd happily go back Thanks Jo & Mark for having us!

would have enjoyed the stay if not for the owner being present there most of the time accessing the storage morning and evening. Although this cottage is supposed to be the only building for a few miles as in the advert ,there is one building right adjacent to the property where probably someone was living overnight or the owner was there which made the trip very uncomfortable. Although we were supposed to check out at 10 am in the morning we were suppose to leave, the owner was in the property cleaning the hot bath without asking or informing us by 6:30am in the morning gettting it ready for the next booking which i dont think is correct since we have the right to use any facilities till 10 am.

Thank you for your feedback. Sykes Cottages was immediately advised by the owners of the property that you had grossly exceeded the occupancy level in the property during your stay. As you are aware the property sleeps 12 people and you admitted that there had been between 14 and 16 most of the time but that there had been additional people there throughout the weekend. This is a breach of the tenancy contract and would not be covered by the owners insurance. This will not be tolerated by Sykes Cottages or our owners. Over occupancy with people sleeping in the floors of the property and the use of the hot tub by fully clothed bathers led to more cleaning and preparation being required and, as you are aware, your bond was withheld for this reason. We have spoken to the owners of the property and been advised that the use of the facilities was provided until departure time and that enjoyment of the property was allowed at all times. The property is great for bird watching, walking, visiting local places of interest as well as a fantastic place to unwind. A tame (ish) owl is the icing on the cake. We loved our stay and hope to return. A great find!

He was there daily making sure the hot tub was topped up daily and there was ice for drinks, he also received our online food order before we arrived so that everything was put away on arrival.

All 9 of us ladies had a wonderful time at The Retreat, and the little touches that the owner added made sure it was an extra special weekend for everyone. Everything was perfect from the hot tub, to the underfloor heating, to the music system and then beautifully decorated rooms....and not forgetting the sheep!! Thank you to Mark and Jo for looking after us so well and letting us experience the best Retreat you could hope for!

  • "I booked the retreat for my sister Hen party weekend when the balance had been paid I had a lovely email from Mark and Jo advising me about our arrival and telling me that they would meet me to show me around the house when I arrived."

Upon arrival Jo was there to greet us and showed me around a house, I can only describe the house as stunning. The attention to detail that Mark has put in to this house is unbelievable. Underfloor heating makes the house feel all cosy and welcoming, there is a fire in the main room and Jo told me they could bring me some more logs down if needed (which we didn’t need as the heating was fabulous) The house is IMMACULATE I actually went around the house trying to find dust and we turned it into a game with a prize … Nobody won as there was none. The house is stocked with EVERYTHING that you would need…. dishwasher tablets, Dishcloths, tea towels, toilet rolls, soap absolutely everything (I had actually brought all of this with me as I didn’t know it was included so took it all home) Mark and Jo had put a lovely little welcome box out for us with some lovely Yorkshire treats and homemade biscuits which were divine. The Kitchen was stocked with everything you could need accept a zester lol but I did bring my own so it was fine. When I opened a cupboard there was a number of items (spices, salt, pepper, oil) which I am assuming have been left by other people which was fabulous and we did the same leaving some things that we had just opened. The Bedrooms were warm, comfy and had plenty of storage for everybody. The bedding was spotless and very good quality, my room had this amazing grey comforter at the bottom which I would love to know where it came from. In the room every bed had 3 different size towels which were brilliant white. Outside the house ….. Well where do I begin ….. Absolutely breathe taking, you drive down the hill to see a completely unspoilt landscape with nothing around (as Mark told me the landscape has not changed since the 1800 apart from the electricity that now comes to the house). Your neighbours are Sheep so Jo told me that making noise or playing loud music was not a problem. Outside has a large enclosed wooden bar which has a wine fridge and heating in. Also robes, towels and flip flops were provided which we made use of when going in the Hot tub. Every morning Jo and Mark came to check that the hot tub was working and the chemical levels were correct so if you had any problems (which you won’t) you could see them. If I could go to THE RETREAT every weekend I would as I just felt so relaxed and comfortable there. The weather was horrendous constantly rained apart from 2 hours but is was still amazing. I cannot recommend this highly enough and I am a women who like to moan but there is absolutely nothing to moan about

  • "The Retreat is a great little find!"

Mark and Jo really have thought of everything that guests would need to make their stay as easy and comfortable as possible (welcome hamper including milk and tea, robes, flips flops, heated cabin for post hot tub drying and the Sonos sound system were particular highlights). A really great place to get away from it all but with Hebden Bridge so close (and walkable) it really was the best of both worlds. High recommend!

! 11 of us stayed at The Retreat for my best friends Hen Weekend and what an amazing chilled weekend we had. The house is incredible and the views are beautiful. It's really hard to put into words how amazing this place is. We even got the pleasure if witnessing little baby lambs been born in the field next to the house. There's nothing that the owners haven't thought of - Robes, slippers and flip flops stored in the bar next to the hot tub, DVD's, games and books for a PJ day, speakers throughout the house. There's more equipment in the kitchen than what most of us probably have at home lol...The list is endless. There's enough room to not be living on top of each other and if you want a quiet moment to yourself to chill out you don't have to look far. We'll be booking a return trip, none of us wanted to go home! Thank you Mark and Joanne. From Brownie's Hens

So peaceful and relaxing. Perfect just to unwind and escape life for a few days. It has the most gorgeous views and wonderful surroundings. The place is done out to a very high standard with no expense spared. We stayed as a party of 12 women and felt another bathroom would have been a great help and outside seating at the front of the property. That said it was a perfect get away and we loved it. We’ll be back.

The outdoor environment is stunning, the bar lodge to the hot tub was a great addition and was used at all times. The cottage itself, every single room had been decorated and furnished to a very high standard. We didn’t want for anything, there was more than enough room and our group of girls loved this cottage more than any other we have been in and we have 2 weekends a month in similar cottages! The owners Mark and Joanne were so accommodating, very friendly and respectful of our privacy! We will definatly stay again. The negative feedback is in regards to the booking system for Sykes and the fact they do not follow their own policy in regards to cancellations! Fortunately for us we were able to manage the situation ourselves not through any service from them though! The reason I have not put didn’t meet expectations is because I didn’t want it to affect the rating of the cottage which would have been extremely unfair!

The photos do not do the house (or surroundings) justice. The owner was there to greet us and gave a thorough tour of the property. The house is extremely well equipped and we wanted for nothing. It was extremely clean and tidy and everything felt brand new. It is a huge space with varying levels (no good for wheel chairs or people who would struggle with accessibility). Towels were provided and the owners had left a fabulous welcome pack and homemade biscuits. It is an extra special place to stay!! If I had to make any criticism it would be that the owner was on site a lot, mainly due to working on another house on the same plot. As lovely as the owner is, it could possibly feel a little intimidating to some as the holiday property was his own home not so long ago. That would be the only negative (and not really a negative at all). In all this is a wonderful place to stay and I would strongly recommend it. Thank you for a lovely stay!
