  • "Woodside Cottage made an ideal base for our stay in North Yorkshire."

The cottage is very well equipped, extremely clean and comfortable. Plenty of hot water and heating if you need it. The owners have provided a lots of useful information and leaflets about the cottage and local tourist attractions etc. in summary a great cottage - I didn’t want to leave and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend!

  • "Very well equipped and clean property."

Kitchen facilities were probably the best we have experienced and we have stayed in a few self catering properties. The week we had was mainly spent outside and this is a good location to travel around but good walk from the door to the woods. If we needed to spend time indoors there were plenty of toys, games, dvds and books for all ages. When we were in my daughter took full advantage. The property was very comfortable and plenty of space for all of us. We would highly recommend this property and would like to visit again in the future, we always went to the lake district but might reconsider now.

  • "Property was clean on the surface, beds comfy and fresh, good standard of cleanliness throughout apart from higher areas ( both bathrooms had black mould and cobwebs on ceiling)."

Living area had everything needed for a short break but was very cluttered, although there was a lot of information provided (maps, local attractions info, etc) a lot of it was out of date. Property information folder was very out of date, not been updated for many years, most importantly was the last carbon monoxide check was 2019! Should be noted that the hot water tank is not a sufficient size for the property (3rd shower of the day ran cold). Property would benefit from an outside tap or area to clean dirty boots / dogs. The Crown Inn was closed (has been closed for at least a month due to illness) and although we were told about this by the property owner the day before we arrived, we would not have booked this property if we had known in advance, this was part of our search criteria and should be advertised more accurately. We feel we were mis-sold on this property ( we only booked the week before our stay)

In response to your comment regarding the crown pub, Sykes were informed of the situation and asked to delete it from the description until we know what is happening to it , Sykes were informed by e mail on 07th March at 10.04 hrs of this , but did not change the description until I had to ring them a few weeks later. We feel you are "spitting your dummy out" regarding this and taking it out on our cottage , we have had nothing but good comments on the 6 years we have owned the cottage taking many repeat bookings. Perhaps if you wanted a "boozy" holiday you should look to book in a large town where there are numerous pubs and not in a lovely peaceful village like Grewelthorpe. When you mention clean on the surface , there are 3 of us clean the cottage before your arrival and it was certainly cleaner than you left it , food on the floor and under and behind the settee , food on the back bedroom carpet , kitchen bin was full of your rubbish even though there is a wheelie bin outside , dirty water left in the bowl in the sink, dishwasher left full , games you had used just left out in the lounge , dirty make up stains on our towel had to be thrown ,everything pulled out of the wardrobes ,(throw overs etc) and just left out ,all the furniture in the back bedroom moved and the single beds pushed together then not put back before you left. Clutter is our choice and enchances the cottage ,no complaints from previous guests ,since we bought the cottage. Your comment about black mould is slightly exagerrated there is a 2 inch patch in the corner of the en suite bathroom in the back bedroom , cobwebs are a fact of nature in the countryside and reappear within minutes of cleaning them . Regarding the information leaflets we try to replace them when we can , but unfortunately even the tourist information office in Masham are having problems obtaining them , we put leaflets in the cottage to help guests with places to visit , we are not obliged to do this , apologies if some are out of date but realistically nobody is going to move Hackfall woods, light water valley , york etc , so dates are not that important really. We stopped leaving records of carbon monoxide checks a few years ago preferring to keep them in a file at home ,I can assure you they are checked on every service ,in fact a qualified electrician did a complete electrical check on the cottage a week before your arrival including checking the 2 carbon monoxide alarms at a cost of £300 + vat ,we consider it essential to have these checks annually for our guests safety. The hot water tanks are pressure tanks with heating elements in both , there is a small tank on top of a very large tank ,it was noted on our service that the bottom thermostat switch on the large tank was switched off hence there was only hot water in the small tank, we had not turned the switch off , obviously someone had tampered with it , both switches are on a timer and timed to come on at appropriate times, We have no thoughts or intentions of installing a outside tap to wash your dog , we let dogs stay free and even leave treats for them , to be honest if you can't be bothered to fill the sink bowl with water and carry it 3 yards to the patio to clean your dogs or boots i don't know what to suggest. We find it difficult to believe how after only a 5 day stay you could leave the cottage in such a state for other people to clean up after you. Property Owner

  • "A pleasant cottage in a nice village."

Shame the pub was closed, which we were not informed about unfortunately. I would recommend the hot water temperature is reduced ie at the kitchen sink, boiling literally, could scald someone.

hi, Perhaps you should have looked at your info e mail i send to all guests prior to their arrival ,regarding the pub I informed you very clearly that the manager had a stroke and was not able to run the pub in his condition , it is in the brewery hands as to what they are going to do with it , As regards the hot water it is a MIXER tap as it is in both shower units , no complaints about the hot water in the 5 years we have had the cottage . How you have the audacity to mark us down on cleanliness is unbelievable , you left the toilets the dirtiest we have ever seen at our cottage , my cleaner who used to work at a hotel network couldn't believe the state you left it. You also never mentioned the temperature gauge for the log burner you broke and just left it on top of the log burner. So my advice to you is to read your e mails ,report any damage you do and leave a place as you find it Property Owner

  • "We chose Woodside Cottage based on the location and the pictures, but were still very pleasantly surprised on arrival."

The cottage is really lovely – compact but without feeling small. The open plan living area worked well, feeling suitable for cooking, dining, and then moving away to relax too. The kitchen was clean and well supplied and had everything we needed (including for some nights eating in due to Covid period). Both bedrooms were clean and nicely decorated, although the beds were a little short (maybe our only criticism and this only really affected the tallest family member!). Both bathrooms were clean and nicely designed, with wonderfully powerful and hot showers. The cottage was pet friendly as described, and our dog quickly felt at home. The owners had left treats for us which were very appreciated, and included dog treats! The immediate location is lovely – the cottage is tucked behind the pub in the car park so felt safe for the kids to wander out and our (very nervous) dog felt safe too. Allocated parking space was great, but there was loads of space around anyway. There is no private outside space, which may have been an issue if we’d wanted to barbecue but this wasn’t an option for us with the weather. However, sitting outside the front of the cottage would not have felt too exposing as the car park/beer garden area is quite private, pretty, and was never overly busy. Grewelthorpe itself is a very pretty village, and the pub is friendly and serves nice home-cooked food. Just outside of the cottage is the beginning of the walk to the Hackfall Woods, which makes a very lovely walk. The drive to Masham for fish & chips, pubs etc is around 5 minutes, and Ripon is also very close by. We’d highly recommend visits to the Himalayan Gardens and the Lime Tree Observatory – both are in Grewelthorpe itself. We are already thinking about when to visit again.

  • "Our expectation from the description was of a private patio area in which you could barbecue."

It may be technically private - but the word private implies to most people that there is privacy - in fact the available area is simply on the edge of a busy pub car park. It is not somewhere you can relax peacefully. It is very noisy outside because of the pubs extractor fan. I would have no complaints if this was all clear from the description but it isn't.

I am sorry you were disappointed in our cottage and it didn't meet your expectations. The description describes the privacy of the patio , the patio is exclusively for guests staying at the cottage. The photo of the cottage clearly shows the patio area, a BBQ is available for guests to use, there is ample space on the patio to do this There is also a 2 seater bench on the patio and a fold up table and extra chairs for guests to use.The cottage is situated behind the pub , the car park never gets busy, however the cottage is at the gateway to the famous Hackfall woods, the pub kindly lets visitors to the woods park free .The noise you say you can hear from the pub, is a cooler fan and not a extractor fan , to hear this fan you have to have sensitive ears as other guests have said how quiet and peaceful it is , in the 3 years we have had the cottage we have not had one complaint regarding any noise, in fact at our other cottage at the other end of the terrace ( Lavender cottage) which is about 5 yards from the pub nobody has complained about any noise. For the last two years we have won awards for guests positive feed backs ( 98% positive) at Woodside cottage and had many returning guests.
