  • "Myself and 3 friends really enjoyed our 4 night stay at Emerald Cottage in December 23."

The cottage was extremely clean, comfortable, beautifully decorated, warm and cosy and very well positioned to visit everywhere in the village of Haworth and surrounding areas. We had a really great time and enjoyed most of what the cottage had to offer and especially enjoyed reading the information on the history of the inhabitants of 6 Green Street-this was really great and someone had obviously done a great deal of research. We have been renting holiday accommodation 4 times a year for 20 years staying in various houses, apartments and flats around UK so feel we have a reasonable amount of experience in what we think is great, good and not so good and, having read the reviews of previous guests and owners comments, we hope you appreciate some feedback with some constructive criticism. The small things we have mentioned certainly did not take away from the enjoyment of our stay in Haworth(apart from the beds maybe!)and we would have no hesitation in booking Emerald Cottage again for another stay in wonderful Haworth! The description of the galley kitchen/dining area suggests these are in the same place but the dining table is actually in an extremely restricted area of the lounge. I could not get my legs under the table or sit on the benches so had to sit on the arm of the chair and reach over to the table to eat my food. A suggestion would be to have smaller sofas/chairs and a slightly larger or even a round table so people could sit and eat comfortably. The kitchen is described as quite compact-it is extremely restricted for space, only one person can stand in the area at a time and it would be difficult (though admittedly not impossible)to do a full blown meal for 4 people due to lack of work top area. It was very well equipped with sufficient cutlery, crockery etc (though only 2 wineglasses for 4 people?) It does not have a garden as stated-it is a concrete area at the side of the house with 4 bins enclosed in wooden structures -I assume this is classed as the patio? The king-size bed in the beautiful loft bedroom was very comfortable. The twin room was lovely but the single beds were reviewed by a previous guest as hard, so a folded duvet had been put on the beds presumably to make them soft but all this did was make them uncomfortable as the quilts moved about as I turned over in the night because they were only 'tucked under' the mattress-not ideal. A big improvement would be to either put decent mattresses on the beds or decent mattress toppers.

  • "From the little garb left - there were no instructions to use any electric facilities in any room, and I think it needs rewriting, no clean knives and forks etc in sealed bag, nor were the TV remotes, and no torch in the bedroom."

The heating did not come on in the morning, COLD. The best thing, having arrived Friday after a 5 hour travel the hob didn't work, so we couldn't cook our tea. Contacted Andrew the handy man, but because of the bad mobile phone reception, we didn't get to speak to him until Saturday. We lost Saturday of our holiday waiting for the hob to be replaced. Surely this should have been checked before hand. Not sure it is suitable for 4 people re living area.

  • "We had a lovely week at Emerald cottage."

The decor and cleanliness of the house was superb. However, a few minor points did niggle us, the small welcome pack was all out of date, only three logs were left for us to use and we found the beds were very hard. The kitchen was very well appointed ,however, really small ,if we had been a family of four we would have struggled

  • "Emerald cottage was like the curates egg, good in parts."

We found it to be very clean & comfortable & could see that a lot of thought & effort had gone into the decoration & it was a good location in which to explore Haworth. We think that the description was a bit misleading in regards to the patio area, in that, the picture with the patio furniture on, isn`t a true reflection of reality, it shows three wall mounted planters, when in fact there are now four wheely bins there, two for Emerald cottage & two for the neighbours, that are now in place of the planters, if that wasn`t enough of a disincentive in using the car space/patio, then dragging the furniture up from the cellar, certainly was. The galley kitchen was very compact & was reasonably equipped but not really adequate for a self catering stay for four people due to there being no food storage, apart from the fridge, & limited preparation area, which is quite evident by the fact that "wall depth" cupboards had been fitted as base units due to the narrow space, which still left little room to actually access the cupboards. The converted hall stand, bathroom sink looks very nice in the photographs but was practically useless & would serve better as a garden water feature, the spout stuck out well past the centre of the bowl which prevented any practical use in getting washed. Also due to it not having an overflow & therefore no plug, then it had no facility to hold water in the bowl so you had to leave the taps running which is not very eco friendly & would benefit by being changed to a more practical, usable sink. We appreciated that the cottage is very small & the owners are limited to what they can do to it, but please, just be honest with the property details. We noted on a previous review that someone else mentioned that the kitchen was not suitable for self catering & the owner gave a rather condescending reply on the lines of that, if you wanted a large kitchen to cook in every night then this was maybe not the cottage for you. I`m sorry but if you advertise a self catering cottage for four people then that is what should be available.

  • "On entering the property we were met by an overwhelming smell of a stale space."

In the sitting room particularly, I think the fabric corner sofa, which is not in the description or the photos, needs freshening up. Having said that it was beautifully decorated and each room had Bronte information. Reading previous reviews we thought the kitchen would be fine for two people. It is small (looks like it was the hallway) and there isn’t anywhere to put stuff but we moved things around to fit our food and drink. There were no instructions for the hob so we had to look online for help. The dining table is also small, covered in an awful cover and not in a good place to use. We had a BBQ the one evening and while cooking & eating our meal a neighbour walked straight through us to use his bin! This wasnt mentioned on booking, I think it needs addressing. The oudoor seating area is next to the bins but they are contained in wooden units and didnt cause any issue. We did not use the garden furniture provided as it was too difficult to access - steep stairs, we used our own folding chairs. No views other than houses, the view of the fells shown on photos is via the velux upstairs. Finally the welcome pack was not what the photos suggested. We had an out of date bar of chocolate that had turned a funny colour, stale crisps, biscuits and UHT milk almost out of date. A pint of fresh milk, not UHT, in the fridge can’t be that difficult. All in all was ok for a short stay.

  • "The property was absolutely spotless, I don't think I've stayed anywhere that was so clean."

However due to the size and design of the property I would recommend for a weekend but not a week. The galley kitchen is tiny with no storage space for food. The cupboards were well stocked with crockery and cooking utensils. But considering the size of the kitchen, I can't imagine a lot of cooking taking place and some of the kitchen utensils could be moved to create storage for food. The decoration of the house was pleasant but very dark.A couple of lamps in the twin bedroom and lounge would help brighten the rooms. The house is a perfect location for the pubs, restaurants and cafes of Haworth which is a lovely place. The property is very unusual but the lack of kitchen space and the dark rooms weren't for us and we left early.

Hi Sheila, we are sorry the kitchen proved to small. We are delighted you found the property so clean and we thankyou greatly for your custom. We do have a much larger property via sykes, Dean Mews, in Horsforth Leeds, please feel free to take a look. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was clean and quirky, the location was good, Haworth Main Street just around the corner, bus stops and a very good fish and chip shop at the bottom of the street, but on the downside the rooms were very dark and quite small."

I appreciate the owners are trying to keep in with the Bronte family's likes and traditions. There are no cupboards in the very small kitchen to store food items, we had to use the table in the front room, luckily i hadnt taken too much. Only had toast for breakfast, not enough room to do much else. We ate out every day/night. Even though garden furniture was provided, the location of where to sit was poor. Not very nice to sit at the side of the house amongst the rubbish bins, even though they were in wooden boxes. I am sorry, but I don't think this property is worthy of 5 stars, I have stayed in better 3's and 4's.

Hi Denise, thanks for your honest assessment and we take on board your comments. With this being a small cottage, which if reflected in the price, i do not feel we have misled with what the outside space offers, however if you do not feel this was portrayed accurately, we take this very seriously and see what we can do. I am glad you found the cottage quirky and clean, but ultimately if this was not the cottage for you, then we are sorry that you did not have the best time. Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely weekend in this cosy and slightly quirky cottage."

The cottage is in an excellent location being very close to the main shopping street in Haworth and close to pubs and restaurants as well as footpaths. The cottage was well equipped for a weekend stay and immaculately clean. The beds were very comfortable and we slept well. The top floor bedroom is a lovely space, and the bathroom and shower are also very nice. The kitchen is small as others have noted in their reviews, but it was clean and we felt had everything we needed for the four of us, though we were mainly eating out. I can't quite give this property five stars because we found the heating situation frustrating. We arrived late (10.30pm) and the house was very cold. It took a few hours to warm up as it was a cold January night. The heating could only be put on for 2 hours at a time so overnight it was off again and in the morning we were very cold again. I think the owner might want to rethink this system for the colder months of the year. There is a log fire which is good, but it didn't seem to throw out a lot of heat and still took a while to warm the room. The parking situation isn't great if you have a larger car, and the road outside has a poor surface. However, these things didn't spoil our stay - we loved the cottage decor and general vibe and would recommend to a couple or small family :)

Hi Vicki. Thankyou for your feedback and it is duly noted and we are sorry you found the heating system frustrating, we are in discussions with the owners on how best to rectify this. We are delighted you enjoyed the cottage and the proximity to all Haworth has to offer and we were so close to 100% score. The research and presentation of occupants in times past is commended. The kitchen is a bit cramped, but I acknowledge it cannot really be improved, without building an extension. The bathroom wash basin tap/pipe is annoying as it impedes access to the basin. It’s great in its context but not on practicality. We have noted your suggestion on more logs and it is something we had debated between ourselves on how best to resolve. We were conscious of dominating the living space with logs, but also conscious of the need for additional logs in times of cold weather. The additional logs are in the cellar and we need to be conscious of safety as the steps are steep. This is something we are meeting to discuss next week and see what solutions we can come up with to provide enough logs whilst not compromising the living space or safety. Thanks again. It was exactly like the photographs on the website. It has been furnished as to take you back to a Victorian time but with all the latest facilities. We arrived to find the Christmas tree and fire surround aglow with fairy lights. The cottage was warm and cosy, a few treats were left in the living room and we felt right at home. Howarth Main Street is just a couple of minutes walk around the corner, they had Morris Dancers and choirs plus a firelight procession going from the bottom of the street to the top of the street. It was magical and happens every Saturday and Sunday in December running up to Christmas. This property is a credit to the owner and we would unreservedly recommend it, and Howarth, as an escape from the modern world.

Hi Gary. Thanks for the feedback and we are glad the fairy lights were appreciated, we did think they added to the atmosphere. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay we hope you return. Many thanks Ian and Amy Property Owner

  • "A stunning cottage in a prime location - 5 star decor with the bonus of not needing to use the car at all as everything is on the doorstep."

The only negative is the comfort - we appreciated the decor had to be in keeping with the property however, after a cold day hiking we couldn't 'relax' as the lounge furniture was just not suited to a 'cosy night in'. Hopefully it was just us being picky......the kitchen is beautifully fitted but again not practical for cooking main meals due to the size..we found 1 coffee pod, a couple of milk pods but no sugar 2 days in... but were grateful for the snacks - thank you!!...luckily there is an amazing pub 5 minutes walk away and the best fish and chip shop we've ever visited!! Do please take the time to read the information folders around the cottage.....after swatting up on the village history it was fascinating to then walk around and spot all of the mentioned streets. Would we go back - of course - but please change the sofa!!!!

Hi Sarah, we hope you are already planning your next trip, as the new sofa has just been ordered and will be installed this month! We really appreciate the feedback, we aimed to go with the chesterfield sofa's to provide an authentic experience, but your feedback has helped us, and we have decided to focus on comfort. Especially after a hard day's walking we understand that it is a priority So the next time you stay with us a comfy sofa will be waiting for you. We also have new house keeper so the lack of coffee pods and sugar should not happen again. Thanks for staying and all the positive feedback. Many thanks. Ian and Amy Property Owner

Had a lovely stay. Haworth is a great base. Ceiling in top bedroom is very low, lots of head bumping. Lounge could be more comfortable. Kitchen cramped, but well enough equipped.

Hi Chris. We have now addressed the sofa and have just purchased a new sofa for the lounge which should be much more comfy. We hope to see you again so you can experience it. Many thanks. Ian and Amy Property Owner

About the location

HAWORTH

Skipton 13 miles; Hebden Bridge 8 miles.

The small village of Haworth was home to the famous Bronte sisters, who were inspired by the surrounding moorland to pen their novels, which have become classics of English Literature. Haworth is a village that time almost forgot, with its myriad of curiosity and antique shops, alleyways and cobbled streets creating a wonderful period atmosphere, all set against a framing backdrop of countryside famously described in the novel Wuthering Heights as wild, rugged and barren. Nearby, the famous Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, an authentic steam railway brought to prominence in the film The Railway Children, provides a lovely day out with a regular service to the old village of Oxenhope. The area abounds with popular places to visit, including the Bronte Parsonage Museum, East Riddlesden Hall, and the National Railway Museum in York. The market town of Skipton, often fondly regarded as the Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales, is just a short drive away, and also within reach are elegant Harrogate and vibrant Leeds and Manchester.
