  • "We had high hopes for our break away, unfortunately the reviews we had previously read seemed to be written whilst wearing rose tinted spectacles, the area itself is very picturesque and we felt the accommodation was in a great position for the activities we would be doing, we unfortunately encountered a power cut, certainly not the hosts fault but it did put us in a position where we couldn't get a warm drink or shower after a fairly hard slog through the rain, the gas cooker doesn't have an ignition system for the hob, and with only use of two matches left in the box and a lighter with no gas left really wasn't much help, power came back on, wanted to settle in for an evening of cuddles infront of the fire (disconnected due to fire risk ) and watch a dvd to which there was a great choice only to find the dvd player wasn't working, the apartment was clean and tidy and was of a good standard probably 5 years ago but could do with a little freshen up, the bed was very comfy but getting a good night sleep was interrupted by a strange banging noise every 20 mins or so repeated two or three times (couldn't pin point source), luckily our dog isn't reactive to other dogs barking unlike the 6 or 7 dogs kept near to the property which became quite irritating towards the end, paddock was nice to allow the dog a quick run but has a couple of dead what looked to be moles so wasn't used much, the little notes dotted around the apartment became quite comical as we would find a new one each day but not really required, we can understand how hard it must be whilst the hosts partner isn't feeling 100% but unfortunately there is a level of standards that we like to encounter when staying away, we wish the host the very best for the future and hopefully they read this as an honest feedback and not see it as a negative response."

    Kind regards

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry about the power cut, which was out of our control. The power was off between 9.15 and 2.30 pm and thankfully the electric ignition and DVD player all worked afterwards. We have a note explaining the outside light, as it has been mistaken for a solar light, and a note explaining checkout instructions. The heating is set at 21 and keeps the flat warm and cosy. The paddock is mown and checked regularly . As regards the banging noise - we were puzzled until we spotted the woodpecker right outside the window. We have put a picture of an owl on the bedroom windowsill and it has moved a few trees back. We are happy to help with any issues raised at the time as we live on sight. Property Owner

  • "We have stayed at a number of holiday cottages and had high expectations for Highview which we booked for 4 nights over the New Year."

To cut to the chase we stayed only one night and our review is as below: Positives: 1. The enclosed paddock area was great for our dog. 2. The bedroom and bathroom were cosy and warm. 3. Face to face greeting from the owner who lives on site. Not so good: 1. The heating in the main area was inadequate and comprised of an electric fire wired up only for the light and no heat. The other source of heat was a radiator which was hot for the top 25%. The heating issue we note had been raised previous nothing done to resolve and meant the room didn't exceed 16 deg C. The thermostat is in the owners half of the building. Not great for a romantic get away. 2. We arrived on a very wet day and the steps up to the entrance are quite a short tread, steep and were very wet and slippery. The hand rail was also slippery as well making it difficult going up and down from a safety. They are wooden grooved steps which are sodden. At night this became more dangerous as yes there are lights at the top and bottom. Both stopped working at night - one having run out of battery from the solar panel (in winter?). This made it unsafe at night. 3. The fridge in the kitchen is a fridge freezer and only has capacity for a few days storage. This wasn't clean when we arrived. 4. The view out of the window whilst looks over the rolling hills as advertised also looks over what can only be described as a dump of farm equipment and fencing etc. We have stopped at working farms before and this for us was not acceptable. 5. Generally we felt the cottage was looking tired and needed some work to bring it back to standard. We couldn't recommend Highview as a getaway in the winter in its current condition. Feedback for Sykes - after talking to your representative who didnt seem to be interested in any complaint other than to pass any comments back to the owner.

  • "Absolutely perfect for us and the dog."

Everything you needed, apart from could have been warmer in the lounge/kitchen area. I did try the electric fire but it looks like it’s been disconnected. The bed was extremely comfortable, I didn’t want to get up!!! Would also recommend a light at the top of the stairs, we had to use a torch on our phones for the dog to see to get down the stairs on an evening as he’s 10 and his sight isn’t perfect. The paddock was fantastic, no worries about our dog getting out. Will definitely return as it had everything we needed for a perfect, quiet, relaxing Christmas

Thank you for your kind words. We could have sorted the radiator out in the sitting room so easily- it just needed bleeding - so sorry - please just let us know and we are happy to sort out any problems. The light switch for the stairs is just inside the door. I am going to put a label on it! Looking forward to seeing you both again. Property Owner

Warm, clean, cosy and well-equipped…sharp cooking knives and a decent cooker are rare finds in a holiday cottage. The views from the living room/kitchen were wonderful. Katie was lovely - friendly, welcoming but unobtrusive. It’s in quite a rural location but it’s easy to get to some great places ( though check your map as well as your sat nav as some roads are very narrow,) and be aware that you have to go to Keighley or Halifax for fuel. We were very lucky with the October weather with just one wet day.We visited Hebden Bridge twice ( it buzzes on a Sunday), Haworth, Shibden Hall (home of, and setting for, Gentleman Jack), Bolton Abbey where we were lucky enough to see the Museum of the Moon, Grassington, a road trip round the Dales for the scenery , quirky Saltaire and Salts Mill for some superb art and photography exhibitions. We thought this was a great property. We would love to return.

The owner was friendly and there is a number if you need to call them. The enclosed paddock for our medium sized dog was our favourite, he loved this unspoilt area to roam safely around, he had never done stairs , as we live in a bungalow, but he mastered them by the end on day 1 and loved watching the goat and geese from them. Lots of lovely views and places to walk ,and history to learn. We took a cool box as we new the fridge and freezer was small from the description when booked, our dog eats raw so we needed the extra space but its enough for breakfast and sandwich stuff. We were out for most of day exploring and came back for baths and rest. Our only request if we came again would be more pillows for the bed as we are used to more plump ones, but the bed is comfy and the bedding is clean ,we put a blanket over in case the dog jumped on and took a dog towel for dirty paws, we would definitely stay here again , simple ,no fuss farm setting ,ideal for a couple with 1 or 2 dogs, we stayed in September 2022 for 4 nights . Most gift shops in Haworth open wed-sunday but there are some open all the time down main street and theres a local coop or farm shop close by , by car .There are very steep hills so good walking shoes is a must . We loved Penistone Park ,especially our dog, just a short drive away , however we did walk it there too! And the brontes waterfall is a lovely setting, good to take a pinic too and worth the walk. Overall a good doggie friendly holiday.

We are glad you enjoyed your break. For any future customers reading this - please ask if there’s anything you need, plumper pillows etc! Always have different ones in stock. Property Owner

However, we were pleasantly surprised with Highview. It is on a working farm, and so you should expect some countryside noises, but for us it added to the feeling you were a bit more rural. Everything was there that we needed, and the dogs had a huge paddock they could run around in. It was about a 15/20 minute walk to Oxenhope and about 25 minute walk to Haworth. There were hourly buses but we had really good weather so were happy to walk, although it’s uphill on the way back from both. You can walk (or run) from the front door so don't have to get in your car to drive elsewhere to walk once you have arrived. You can cook/prepare meals comfortably in the flat (or order in) but if you want to eat out you will probably need to either walk or drive into Oxenhope/Howarth or further afield to the pubs or eateries nearby. Check/ring pub opening and serving times and book ahead as the local pubs only offer limited service at weekends (info available within flat). if you are thinking of bringing your dog(s) I'd advise you to check with either Sykes or the owners to see if your dog would be suitable for spending time in an upstairs flat. There are easily accessible large areas nearby/outside the flat suitable for exercising your dog(s) but there are also grazing cows/goats and sheep present in surrounding walled/fenced fields so it depends what type of dog(s) you have and how well behaved it is/they are around/near grazing animals. If you are interested in spotting birds there were lots of species around in June, pack some binoculars!

Thank you for your kind words and also the ice Creams! We are so thrilled you enjoyed your stay. Re the dog paddock, thank you for your concern but we’ve never had an escapee from the dog paddock yet...! There is a grid across the back of the gate next door to the goats (although they are not often in that field) and there is a footpath on the other side which is also fenced off and a pretty thick row of trees and hedging is also alongside the wall on the paddock side. It was always my husbands intention to give any visiting dogs a holiday with a lovely large paddock to run around in Property Owner

  • "Very suitable property for anyone outdoorsy."

Although it was clean and tidy, we would have felt happy to bring a dog as the owners have provided little extras that would make you feel relaxed about it. Katie came to meet us once we had got in and unloaded all our belongings and she made it clear that we were to contact her about anything that we might need help with. She was extremely friendly and welcoming and taking the Covid extra cleaning policy very seriously. She had also, kindly, left us some little treats. On the one occasion that we did need something extra, she responded really quickly. Other than that, she left us to it which was nice, so although the owners are on site, you don't feel watched. The bed was extraordinarily comfortable and warm and we slept really well. The temperature dropped while we were there but the heating comes on quite frequently and quickly warms the flat up. We made use of the little electric heater on the first cold evening but after that we found the heating was more than adequate. The kitchen had everything we needed for two and enough space to make a decent meal. All the electrical goods worked well and there is a lovely heated towel rail (which seems to come on several times a day) and some over-radiator-racks for drying washed clothes. The bathroom was fantastic - the shower was good, the bath was wonderful and there was always plenty hot water. The view from the flat is outstanding, it really is. It looks out across the moors and if you're an early riser, you will enjoy some incredible sunrises. The weather over the moors is very changeable but this means you can enjoy watching the drama from the window as the low clouds roll in - we loved this! On site, there are lots of farm animals to look at and lots of grassy footpaths to explore nearby. We did the 9 mile classic Bronte circular walk from Haworth village up to Top Withins which was thought to be the inspiration for Wuthering Heights. Haworth itself is beautiful and within 1.5 miles walking distance along well signposted tracks. We didn't visit any coffee shops or pubs (being very careful due to Covid) but the Spar and excellent wholefood shop in Haworth met most of our needs, the convenience store in Oxenhope was handy and the pharmacist was helpful when we needed him. There are some big supermarkets over towards Keighley if you have greater needs or special diets. From our base we travelled into Nidderdale and Wharfdale to enjoy some excellent walking and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We would certainly recommend this place as perfect for enthusiasts of the moors and we hope to return.

Also much appreciated were the bread, eggs and chocolate biscuits found on our arrival. Some beautiful places to visit, Shibden Hall being a particular favourite.

  • "A very relaxing place to stay and well situated for walks from the cottage."

There are pubs within walking distance serving good food. Many thanks to the owners Katie and Dave for bread, milk, butter, eggs and honey, much appreciated. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend and we are hoping to return.

  • "Highview is a lovely little place to stay."

The apartment itself has two big windows which give great views across the valley, one of which you can admire while sitting in bed ! There is also a lovely big garden area to relax in, which is secure and great for dogs to roam around. There are loads of things to do and places to visit in the area, a long weekend wasn't enough! We really loved our stay and would love to go back.

  • "The cottage was lovely - very spacious for two people, with fantastic views from the big living room windows."

It was lovely to be right out in the country - the birdsong was wonderful. Our hosts were very welcoming and helpful. We appreciated the "welcome package" of milk, teacakes etc. All in all a lovely stay.

  • "Well situated and comfortable apartment, with everything you need within walking distance."

The tourist village of Haworth is about a mile away, and Oxenhope, southern terminus of the Keighley and Hope Valley Railway, half the distance, at the foot of the valley. Great views from the premises, with a variety of animals from the small-holding adjacent for added interest. Welcoming owners Katie and David on hand next door to deal with any questions. Excellent bathroom facilities, and generally everything else you need. Wifi reasonable for a countryside location. Ideal for a walking holiday (open moorland, industrial archaeology and farmland, with half a dozen waymarked long-distance footpaths all at hand); no need for a car to get places.

  • "We spent a lovely week at the apartment."

The view from the living room was a picture, the bed was really comfy, the bathroom a good size and we found the location perfect for touring the area which offered so many options. We spent all day out and about and the evenings in the apartment. Our hosts were very welcoming and their smallholdering had ducks, hens, sheep and a donkey, which we were given the okay to feed with titbits. From our experience we’d happily recommend the flat for a great holiday for walkers or tourers.

About the location

HAWORTH

Skipton 13 miles; Hebden Bridge 8 miles.

The small village of Haworth was home to the famous Bronte sisters, who were inspired by the surrounding moorland to pen their novels, which have become classics of English Literature. Haworth is a village that time almost forgot, with its myriad of curiosity and antique shops, alleyways and cobbled streets creating a wonderful period atmosphere, all set against a framing backdrop of countryside famously described in the novel Wuthering Heights as wild, rugged and barren. Nearby, the famous Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, an authentic steam railway brought to prominence in the film The Railway Children, provides a lovely day out with a regular service to the old village of Oxenhope. The area abounds with popular places to visit, including the Bronte Parsonage Museum, East Riddlesden Hall, and the National Railway Museum in York. The market town of Skipton, often fondly regarded as the Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales, is just a short drive away, and also within reach are elegant Harrogate and vibrant Leeds and Manchester.
