The welcome food pack was really appreciated. Secure front garden for our small dog, there is a low gate across the opening. We enjoyed our first ever geese eggs! Super walks from the cottage and surrounding area. We also loved the reclining sofa when watching television in the evening-great to have Netflix. We hope to return.

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay."

The first time for us in this part of Yorkshire. Beautiful country side. The cosy cottage was very comfortable with a well equipped kitchen. TV channels were limited but had Netflix and Wi-Fi and a good selection of books. We will miss the ducks, geese and chickens and the amazing views. Highlights for us were Haworth and the Brontë Museum, Shibden Hall (book a time slot but allow plenty of time for parking as we could not get in the nearest car park) and the Bankfield Museum (free entrance and costumes from the TV series), and the Piece Hall. Hebden Bridge can get very busy at the weekend and again we had difficulty parking.

Owners lived next door and were more than happy to answer my questions of where to go in the area. Everything everyone could need was at hand. Fantastic welcome pack. Bread butter milk tea coffee sugar and milk. Plus a bottle of wine. Not sure why people moan about no washing machine, there is a dish washer but I never used it. Fantastic views peaceful plus you can buy eggs from the entrance to the drive, honesty box in place.came home with hen, duck and goose eggs. No complaints or moans from me.

  • "I had a very comfortable and quiet week here in December."

The owners were very friendly and helpful. The cottage was clean and the kitchen was well-equipped with a great starter pack (useful because I had forgotten some essentials). The views are fantastic across the valley and with plenty of footpaths nearby it would be a great place for visiting in the spring or summer.

  • "The property is lovely."

The views are exceptional. The suite in the lounge has been updated and is now a comfortable brown leather, with double reclining couch. The main bed is very comfortable, but it only has a double quilt. I brought my king-size quilt in, because I find a double quilt on a double bed is not big enough. And the mattress protector and sheet were very tight and kept moving in the night - they were a bit of a nuisance. The kitchen is well-equipped, but some things are missing like foil or cling film, or tongs. They may not be a problem for most. And I was surprised that there is no washing machine, with it being walking country. The bathroom was very clean, but the grout and sealant need replacing all around. The front garden was fairly secure for my little dog, although more adventurous ones would jump the low fence. And I would plead with other guests to please pick up after your dog. I picked up lots of mess that had been left. The rear yard is not enclosed and my dog decided to explore and ended up in someone's garden at the end of the block! All in all, a very nice place in a lovely setting. Would recommend.

  • "The cottage was excellent in all respects but it is worth making a comment about the access instructions."

We had some difficulty because some local roads were closed on the day of arrival which is not the fault of Sykes or the owner, but the instructions need updating anyway. The directions refer to turning at the Weavers Arms which no longer exists. Satnav could not find it from the postcode given either. Also the parking for the cottage refers to an area of grass next to a camper which we could not identify. Very minor issues which did not diminish our satisfaction in the cottage, though.

The property

This attractive cottage, once part of a Pennine sheep farm still holds a glimpse of that old tradition and is situated on a beautiful hillside within the village of Midgley above Hebden Bridge, the home of the National TrustÂ’s Cragg Vale.

Having two bedrooms, this retreat is ideal for both families and couples who want to escape from their busy lifestyle and become at one with the rural delights.

From the southerly facing front garden you will enter a large well laid out porch with a rattan three piece suite that can be placed outside on the patio in good weather.

This is an ideal spot for quiet reading or just enjoying the spectacular, panoramic views across the valley below.

From there you will pass through a small hall into the sitting room with woodburning stove and comfortable seating.

Here you can relax through the evening watching a large flat television with free view channels, WiFi and Netflix or play some of the games provided.

French doors lead into the large diner/kitchen.

Fully equipped with all modern appliances it still however retains that country feel, with its oak cupboards and large ‘farmhouse’ table and chairs.

A rear door leads out into the sheltered paved yard, useful for hanging wet clothes.

Back in the hall take the lovely carpeted stairway up to the next floor which houses a nicely decorated bathroom with elegant fittings.

To the front of the cottage a large double bedroom continues that traditional feel with pine furniture and pretty bedding, although a walk-in wardrobe hides that modern touch.

Views from the large windows bring in light and sunshine and again the lure of the beautiful hills and valleys of Calderdale.

To the rear a warm, cosy twin bedroom is the perfect setting for peaceful sleep.

The old mullion windows overlook the farm woodland which has become ‘home’ to a variety of birds and wildlife.

Frequent visitors include rabbits, deer, grouse and owls, all of which, if you are lucky, may be viewed from the comfort of indoors.

When the weather is pleasant you can enjoy the garden or even wander down into the villages of Midgley and Luddenden with their nearby picturesque attractions.

A village shop selling all essentials is close by.

This area is a magnet for those seeking outdoor activities such as walking the many paths across the Calder Way or cycling the narrow hills and valleys around the moors.

Whilst more gentle pastimes include photography and painting which the numerous galleries in the area will testify to.

Enjoy scenic drives to the nearby beautiful tourist destinations of Hebden Bridge, Haworth with its famous Bronte Parsonage and Holmfirth, home of ‘Last of the Summer Wine’.

There is much to enjoy on this fabulous cottage holiday.

About the location

LUDDENDEN

Hebden Bridge 4 miles; Halifax 5 miles.

Luddenden is a conservation village in Calderdale, close to Hebden Bridge. The community is first mentioned in 1284, and in 1375 a corn mill was moved from Warley Town to exploit the Luddenden Brook. Nearby, the attractive town of Hebden Bridge is the home to the picturesque Rochdale Canal and a delightful Victorian railway station. The town of Mytholmroyd is an easy drive away, the birthplace of Poet Laureate Ted Hughes, and famous for the Cragg Vale Coiners. This is excellent walking country, with the National Trust Hardcastle Crags and the Pennine Way, plus the area hosted the Tour De France in 2014. Enjoy scenic drives and cycling across the moors, whilst nearby Haworth boasts the Parsonage Museum commemorating the famous Bronte family who lived there. The area is also a must for steam railway enthusiasts who will enjoy the thriving Worth Valley Railway, whilst the highly-acclaimed Eureka Museum in Halifax is noted for its unique Piece Hall and its Victorian architecture.
