  • "The house is comfortable and homely however the staircase is very steep."

It has 15 steps more than the usual 12 steps in most houses. The house can be cold as the central heating did not function well according to the thermostat. Other than that it was a very enjoyable stay. I do think that Sykes holiday cottages is a little bit too expensive. Would I stay in Castlewood "Cottage" (its actually a terraced house) again? Maybe, as I do like to explore further places.

Hi Melanie, Thank you for your review. We are sorry about the heating. We did not know until after you had ended your stay and then from the note you left. It turned out the boiler thermostat needed resetting and took only a couple of minutes to sort out. The cottage is in a terrace, as one of the photos in the Sykes listing shows. We are glad you had a enjoyable stay and hope the longer staircase and the lack of heating didn't impact you too much. If you choose to come and stay again and have any issues with something not working please do get in touch immediately. We always endeavour to ensure everything works properly but things do break. Our contact details are in the property's visitor guidebook. Thanks again. Property Owner

  • "Tastefully decorated, thoughtfully equipped and furnishings and fittings all of a high quality."

So good to have sharp knives, decent hooks on the doors and a really nice shower! There was plenty of crockery etc without it being over the top, so things were easy to access. Plenty of empty cupboard space in the kitchen. Possibly an extra remark about the steep staircase would be useful for older or less agile people. Parking was generally ok but we were told by a resident that his car had been damaged by other vehicles manoeuvering in the tight space available. The owners were really helpful and have done a great job of creating a lovely place to stay.

It is in an excellent location both to town and the countryside and we had no problem parking. We really enjoyed strolling along the canal and the different markets in Skipton. The information folder in the house was a great help when planning our week and had loads of great suggestions for restaurants and attractions. Thank you

  • "Castlewood Cottage was ideal for us."

There was ample space, and we all appreciated the tasteful interior decor. The beds were comfortable with towels and linen of good quality. There was plenty of hanging space and hangers. A lot of thought had been put into the finer detaills (not always found in holiday rentals) - hand soap by every sink, large toilet rolls, dishwasher tablets and laundry liquid were supplied. The welcome pack for the humans was a lovely touch, as was the Scooby Snacks doggy chocolate! The double bedroom window had views of the church and castle. For insomniacs, the closeness to the chimes of the church clock were a reminder I didn’t need. The weather was somewhat disappointing for our rare and important family reunion with the Aussies, but the comfort of the cottage and the genuinely warm welcome and great service we received in shops, restaurants, cafes and bars was outstanding. We highly recommend The Woolly Sheep pub and restaurant , Cock and Bottle, VSQ Gin & More Bar and Kibble Dog Friendly Coffee House in Skipton. The Fountaine Inn in Linton continues give great value for money and delish, hearty meals served by friendly staff. The Retreat Tearoom and Black Horse Hotel in Grassington and Wonky Cafe in Settle were also very good. Castle Woods behind the impressive medieval castle is ideal for dog walkers. A thoroughly enjoyable stay was had by all - thank you. We highly recommend Castlewood Cottage as a base for exploring the beautiful Yorkshire Dales.

They have put a lot of thought into planning the cottage. We loved it, our family and friends did too. So glad we found you. It is truly a Five Star accommodation.

Had a slight issue with leaking kitchen sink pipe on arrival, this was quickly rectified after contacting owner. Nice touch with welcome wine/biscuits/popcorn on arrival. Would have welcomed a cleaning cloth/potwash brush/toilet bowel cleaner being left as had to purchase; just a small point but has always been appreciated at other holiday lets over the years. Would return/recommend property to others.

I am glad you enjoyed staying at Castlewood. I am so sorry about the dishcloth as you should have been left a scourer and a cloth by the cleaners. We have recently changed cleaners and this had not been brought to light before so really appreciate this feedback. Property Owner

  • "Lovely property in central location."

Warm and inviting and well decorated throughout. Just a couple of things which are small and in no way meant to be picky: 1. the lounge rug has a permanent crease which made it easy to trip over, I tried to straighten it but it didn't work 2. the weekly planner\key ring holder in the kitchen dropped off; a better wall fixing is probably required Lastly, the house is on a very steep hill and if you are with elderly guests with walking difficulties might make it difficult.

We received a fabulous welcome pack which was appreciated. The cottage had everything we needed (and more) and was very clean. We had a call from the owner to check everything was ok which it was. Perfectly situated in a quiet street but very close to town. The only minor negative was there was no designated parking and it’s a narrow steep street. We would definitely stay again.

Very close to shops/restaurants etc Spacious accommodation. Good height doors and rooms (one of our party being 6' 5"). Well equipped with crockery / glasses / cutlery etc. Although we didn't use the lower ground space, it would be great during wetter weather and for families. Loved the individual personality of this property with lovely design and quirky features.

  • "The house was in an ideal area for access to all amenities and a short drive to Harrogate and York and other tourist attractions."

Only down side was the steep hill up to the property and the steep stairs in the house. Maybe worth mentioning it in the description to warn elderly customers, we started to find it a bit of a struggle and we’re in our 60’s. Younger people wouldn’t find it a problem. Please don’t take this as a criticism.

Known as “The Gateway to the Dales”, Skipton is well placed for visiting all that the Dales has to offer, whilst York, the Lake District and the West Coast are also within easy motoring distance. This lovely market town has much to interest the enthusiastic visitor, boasting an ancient castle open to the public, a beautiful old parish church and a colourful market occupying the cobbled setts each side of the high street. In 2014, The Sunday Times named Skipton as Britain's "best place to live" and two years later placed it among the nine best towns in Yorkshire and the North-East. Steam railways with regular excursions are available at Embsay and Bolton Abbey, and the Leeds to Liverpool Canal passes through Skipton with the 1 mile long Foulridge Tunnel and the 5-rise locks at Bingley within a short travel.
