It was really beautifully clean on arrival, and had all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. I have some mobility issues, and had no issues getting around the cottage, and also found that the downstairs shower room was ideal. The cottage is also really well situated, with lots to do right on the doorstep. Will definitely be back.

  • "The property is ideally placed for exploring the dales and the fittings were excellent - the bathrooms and kitchen appliances (super new cooker) very good."

The general ambiance was good with a lovely back garden to sit and enjoy the wildlife. However we did have concerns about clothes storage and the kitchen utensils. The former consisted of one hanging frame and the latter was a pot pouri of antiquated cutlery and crockery - is was difficult to see how these features got past Sykes' quality assurance measures. Also the cleaning and maintenance products were sparce. This parsimony was reflected in the 'welcome pack' which would have cost around £1 so we did not really feel that welcome, especially given the price of rental.

Thank you for your feedback, it is of course disappointing when guests have a negative experience but I do very much appreciate you taking the time to write with your comments. I always listen to feedback and am in the process of making significant changes. I hope 'when' you come again you will see a difference. Property Owner

  • "We enjoyed our stay in this traditional Dales farmhouse."

We checked around carefully before we left to ensure all should be as we found it but must apologise for not emptying the kitchen waste bin. We completely overlooked it! It was lovely waking up each morning, drawing back the curtains and seeing the variety of birds on the bushes in the back garden. The property is well placed for exploring the Dales and is quite close to two well provisioned shops and a number of places to eat. The living room is on the dark side and could benefit from additional lighting as has been done with the equally darkish farmhouse we are currently in, which makes it cheerful and snug. We appreciated the welcome carton of milk and pack of biscuits. The beds were very comfortable and the property is well appointed. .

Thank you for your positive feedback. I am so glad to hear you enjoyed your stay at Shiers Farmhouse and found it comfortable. I note your comment about the lighting and will add some extra lights. Property Owner

  • "We enjoyed our stay in the farmhouse."

It was reasonably comfortable although the bed in the largest room was a little unsupportive. Having said that though, the house is spacious with lovely bathrooms and a well-stocked kitchen making it ideal for a family get together. If you want to use the stove in the living room it’s necessary to buy logs. The house is well situated with many walks and close to many other picturesque villages in the Dales.

Thank you for your feedback, I am sorry to hear you found it only reasonably comfortable. The sitting room sofas are certainly comfortable and the log fire makes it a warm and cosy room. Perhaps it was simply that the mattress in the main bedroom was a little worn. I have ordered a new mattress. If you book again, I'm sure you will find the bed much more comfortable. I do appreciated feedback and always try to respond to make improvements. Property Owner

  • "Some areas of the kitchen we not properly cleaned, for example the cooker hood was covered in a layer of grease and there were numerous cobwebs here and there."

The high chair needed a good scrub as well for the baby. What was most unfortunate was there were workmen right outside the property as we arrived, digging holes and putting in a new water pipe. This went on all week, so we had noise and problems getting in and out and parking our cars. We appreciated that this was unexpected by the owner, but in hindsight, had we known, we would certainly not have booked this cottage. Although some areas of the cottage and rear garden were nice, we all agreed that we wouldn't return for another stay, despite the workmen.

  • "I loved the peace and stillness of this old stone cottage, with its thick walls keeping out anxieties about the Co-Vid."

The peace and quiet of the location was a joy. Also loved the quirky old furniture. I do think however, that potential visitors should be aware that as the cottage is very old, they may find some things difficult - the main one for us was the heating. It took us quite a while to work out how to keep the cottage as warm as we would like. NB the caretaker was very helpful in this regard as was the owner who remotely organised a heating engineer the same day we mentioned a problem. It's not that it doesn't work, more that with the walls being so thick and there being two different heating systems, it took some getting used to. A further point is that the stairs are a little uneven which is again due to the building's age, but could be a problem if visitors had mobility problems. Overall, I would describe this as a home full of charm and peaceful atmosphere.

CRACOE

Grassington 6 miles.

Cracoe is an idyllic hamlet situated approximately five miles north of the market town of Skipton and around six miles south-west of Grassington. The village lies on the Way of the Roses, a coast-to-coast cycling route which opened in 2010 running between the seaside resort of Morecambe on the Irish Sea and Bridlington in East Yorkshire. In nearby Grassington tourists can visit the Folk Museum which is housed in two miner’s cottages and features many exhibits and artefacts on village life through the ages. There are also regular events and gatherings in the town, including a festival running during the three Saturdays leading up to Christmas and a 1940s-themed weekend.
