  • "Had a lovely week at Hallams Yard."

Cottage was warm, clean and comfy. Very convenient for town centre yet very quiet. Washing machine and dishwasher were a bonus. Would certainly come back.

Clean and well equipped. Milk , tea, sugar and coffee provided for arrival plus a delicious cake and packets of biscuits. Most welcome after a journey. Only problem was we couldn't figure out how to get heat from the pretty living flame fire. That is just us. We hope to return next year.

  • "This is a perfect property in an impossibly fantastic location."

Peaceful with the canal so close, yet a minute away from the town. Wonderful place. Upgrade to kitchen was very welcome, as was the new shower unit. Only teeny thing is that we are both tall so the bath towels were a bit on the scanty side. Will bring our own modesty covering towels next time. Still the most amazing place to stay though. Would thoroughly recommend

  • "The roof needs to be fixed not patched The railing ar the top is coming loose on both sides."

We found that some finishes were a bir tough. The bathroom door should not have a crack. we did like the centralized position close to the market and pubs. In regards to the roof leak faster response is needed There should be a local number in case of emergencies to address serious concerns such as a roof leak going into/onto a bedroom/mattress

Thank you for your feedback and we are of course disappointed to hear your concerns as we always want our guests to enjoy their stay and given so many return we believe most do given the feedback we have. However we understand your frustration and obviously we were unaware of the roof issue which happened we understand after a storm in the area. With respect to the roof once we were informed of the leak through into the bedroom we arranged for a roofer to attend the property who did so and I believe met you at the property. He confirmed with us that the leak was not significant and as there was no rain forecast should cause no further problems in the immediate future. We then arranged for a new repair to the whole roof starting as soon as possible (June 12th) with the roofer. I genuinely do not believe that a faster response was possible. Once we were informed by Sykes we arranged for the roofer to come out and this was done in less than 24 hours. I understand our cleaner who attended the property the following day gave you her number if you had any other concerns. Our number is in the information folder and we also emailed you within 30 minutes of receiving your message from Sykes as we did not have a phone number for you. We kept Sykes informed each day and we were not informed of any concerns from you at all after the initial contact. With regard to the stairs there are two hand rails and the reason is the stairs are relatively steep so we had the second put in for safety. The original cannot be secured any further and has been locked at and we have been informed is completely safe. As for the finishes being a little tough I am not entirely sure what you mean by this but the kitchen is less than a year old, the shower is new this year and the cottage is regularly updated for example new carpets recently and new blinds and a new fire. The cottage is two hundred years old and therefore has the quirks of an older property, such as old doors. We are obviously sorry you appear not to have been satisfied but we are confident that we responded in a timely manner at all times and believe the criticisms made are extremely unfair. As our other guests before and after your visit have provided very positive feedback we feel the cottage is a lovely place to stay. We are sorry that you do not agree and of course entirely respect that and hope you had a safe trip back home to Canada. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was lovely and comfortable, and most of the facilities were exactly what we needed."

The position of it is amazing, bang in the middle of town. The only issues we had were that the kitchen drawer opened, but didn't shut properly, and you had to wiggle and slam it, I imagine there was a knack. Also, there was no lock on the bathroom door, and as the only female among 4 of us, and the fact we spent a lot of time in the cottage due to Covid19 restrictions, we had to put the towel rail outside the door to say it was engaged.

  • "Only that, in the current circumstances I would have felt more confident if a dishwasher had been available."

Relying on the previous occupants -or indeed anyone else- to wash up scrupulously by hand is unsatisfactory in my view. Of course I did know beforehand that there was no dishwasher but I wouldn’t book another property which didn’t include one. This is a general observation, not targeted at the Hallams Yard property.

  • "There simply is no better location in Skipton for a stay than this cottage."

And having a reserved, easy to use parking space opposite your backdoor is wonderful. That is something many other nearby lets do not offer. You are only a short walk from the High Street, the Castle, M &S Simply Foods, pubs, etc. The train station is also within walking distance if you do not have a lot of luggage. I stayed here before in 2013 and the owners have made some nice improvements since then with a new gas cooker, new linens, etc. Hallams Yard just feels like home the minute you walk in. The lounge is so comfortable with the gas fire, nice TV, and loads of books, DVDs, and games for your use. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need. Upstairs the bedrooms are rather compact, but the beds are very comfortable. The bathroom has a nice power shower and in the cabinet they even supply a few rubber bath toys for children. Truly the only possible negative to this holiday flat is the steep, narrow stairs--not a problem for many but would be an issue for anyone with mobility issues. I have large suitcases so I simple leave my case downstairs and take up what I need for the days of my stay. I highly recommend Hallams Yard to anyone coming to Skipton. I know I will certainly book again when I am in the area.

The location was fabulous - right in the middle of Skipton - and having its own parking place made it even better! Plenty of cafes and pubs nearby, excellent shopping and seriously pretty walks thru the Castle Woods! We visited several National Trust properties and also used our Historic Houses Association and English Heritage cards! And of course the Castle itself is definitely worth visiting! They loved it: the location, the high standard of furnishing, towels, welcoming Yorkshire Parkin cake and the wide selection of DVD's . It would have been good to have a washing line as the weather was good. I know they are expensive to run but a tumble drier for the wet days would also be good. My family would like you to pass on their personal thanks to the owner, for the obvious care and attention to the fabric and decor. Thank you. .

  • "The main thing about this listing is the same thing that occurred with the other Holiday cottage I rented through Sykes last year - lack of pertinent information."

The first thing that happened was that I didn't know how to lock the door. It may have seemed to the owner that it was obvious how to do it, but coming from abroad I was unfamiliar with that kind of door. It was extremely difficult to contact the owner, though Sykes tried very hard to do so. It was only that I had talked to a neighbour previously, who showed me how to get to the cottage - again not in the details - that I knocked on his door and asked him how to lock/unlock the door, and he kindly came and showed me, by which time Sykes had got through to the owner who said that I had to lift the handle to engage the mechanism. How would I have known this? Why not put it in the details. Why did I have to bother the neighbour about it? The cottage was as described in the details, it was the only suitable cottage available at the time I wanted to come over. Being a cottage for families, having three bedrooms, I would suggest they get a washer/dryer combined, as it was very inconvenient having to go to the Whiterose laundry on Brougham street to dry clothes. It would have been helpful if there had been better information about rubbish collection. When we got there both the blue and green bins were full to overflowing and obviously had not been emptied for a while. Although there were instructions about which of the two bins would be collected in which week, they were not clear as it said leave the bin at the end of the yard by the wall. Did they mean the end of Hallam's yard or the end of the bit of yard that belonged to number 21? And which wall were they meant to be left by? It was obvious other renters didn't know either. On the day the binmen were meant to come we left the bin where it was - the same place where all the other bins for the cottages were kept - it was the wrong place - because it wasn't collected. It was important to us to have a parking space as we had a rental car - if I was the owner I would put a sign on the wall stating which space was for number 21.
