  • "Warm welcome from Sharon."

Very peaceful and quiet - warm and comfortable. Lovely area including Snape village and close by Bedale. We loved the unique setting and the dogs loved the enclosed garden.

  • "Great place to stay in Snape which is a very quiet village."

The owner lives in the main building and is very helpful and friendly. The castle dates back many years and was for some time the home of Kathrine Parr, Henry 8ths last wife.

  • "Top marks for the property."

Everything that we needed was provided. To be really picky, it would be helpful if the window in the roof of the upstairs bedroom could be fixed to allow it to be opened (and maybe a curtain provided for summer mornings). Lovely location for a great holiday and we would certainly return in the future.

  • "Beware! The landlady, Sharon, has taken £142."

99 from our credit card to repair some minor scratches on the front door which might have been due to our dog. The £142.99 appears to be for a complete overhaul of the door. Honsetly the scratches are invisible on many of the photos which Sharon sent. The door is a rustic door, exposed to the elements 24 hours a day, not a pristine door in perfect condition. Sharon was friendly, and we enjoyed our stay in the castle - and left it clean and tidy. However, this unreasonable demand for maintenance costs leaves a very sour taste - I would caution against staying there.

  • "Had a wonderful stay at Snape Castle, The Undercroft."

Our four dogs had a fantastic time, slightly marred by someone complaining on our last night, from the nearby holiday lets claiming “your dogs are loud!” Our dogs were very well behaved and chatted to Sharon’s dogs on a regular basis! Upstairs would benefit from the skylight being fixed as it was impossible to open when it was very warm. The shower dripped downstairs in the shower room and the kitchen tap was very wobbly! Sharon was a gem, leaving biscuits, wine and milk for when we arrived. A perfectly relaxing week with an abundance of wildlife. Would recommemd

Absolutely magical setting in Snape Castle; a beautiful property in amazing grounds. Excellent that it is also dog friendly. The house has comfy beds and is very well equipped, with everything you need. Sharon is very helpful and friendly.

  • "This property oozes history from the minute you turn into the drive."

Inside, the Undercroft is a modern, well appointed holiday let, albeit one with a 3 foot thick wall between kitchen and living room. The underfloor heating kept the evening chills at bay (in June!). Outside are two well maintained lawned areas with plenty of seating to take advantage of the sun. The chapel, located above the Undercroft, is well worth a visit, as is the Castle Arms, the village pub, which serves very good food. We had a wonderful holiday, and would certainly hope to visit again.

  • "The Undercroft was lovely and cosy, with excellent underfloor heating which our dogs loved."

The sofas and bed were very comfortable and the showers were wonderfully powerful. It had all the amenities that we needed, and having the front garden for the dogs was a blessing. There are lots of restaurants and pubs locally, most of them dog-friendly. The property is in a great location to visit the Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors, Whitby, Harrogate and York. We would stay again.

It was fantastic for our 3 dogs. The owner was very friendly and gave us some good info re eating out etc. The only very small negative is checking in times which was misleading, the write up on the property said 4pm,confirmation said 5pm( latest we have ever had to check in most of first day gone by the time we could check in) and the info sheet for us in the property said check in was 3pm. Sharon provided everything that you could possibly need and more, more than I have found in any other holiday home. The bed was comfortable from the first night, unheard of! The tv had lost its signal prior to us arriving and we were looking forward to watching the FA cup final, but no problem, Sharon worked out the issue and retuned it in minutes. The dogs absolutely loved the garden, we played ball for hours! A fantastic week. One which we didn’t want to go home from. We will be back.

  • "The undercroft has a good sense of history, as part of a castle once occupied by Catherine Parr."

It is spacious and both bathrooms have good strong showers, with a view of a large ruined tower from the en suite. There is a constant supply of hot water and the master bedroom is very comfortable. With stone-flagged floors and rugs, you are always aware that you are in a castle, while also having good wi fi and two TVs downstairs. You need to go into the courtyard for a mobile signal (but then again the walls are four feet thick!) and the stairs to the upper bedroom are very steep and not suitable for anyone with mobility problems. The open plan kitchen makes eating in easy, but there is also an excellent pub within walking distance in Snape village and plenty of take-aways a short drive away in Bedale. There are lots of great places to visit nearby. We can recommend the Georgian Theatre tour at Richmond and the lovely small town of Hawes.

And it is obviously very special to stay in Snape Castle. The accommodation is very secluded and cozy and has all you need. Swaledale and Wensleydale are within easy reach, with the North York Moors if you fancy going slightly further afield (though we did not go east of the A1). Masham and Bedale both very interesting and within easy reach. The Undercroft really is underneath the castle’s original chapel. It’s very private, with a gravelled forecourt and coffee table, ample parking, and small garden area. Comfortable bed, and good showers. The second (twin) bedroom is upstairs, and it would be a stretch for four adults, but perfect for two or 2+2. Thank you, Sharon, for two weeks’ respite from the dreaded Covid-19.

The owner, Sharon, was helpful and friendly, available but not intrusive at all, and she made check in easy. You need a car to get around, but the town of Bedale is close and has most of what you need day to day, also some fun spots to nose about. We found our stay restful, with a comfortable bed and adequate (underfloor) heating. Kitchen provided every sort of pan, dishes, and utensils needed, and a large fridge. Our only negative is that the living room is dark, but that is because the castle walls are 3 feet thick and using the original openings for windows to stay true to its historical significance.
