“The Old Mistal was great for our family stay, really comfortable beds, lovely big bathroom and everything you could need in the kitchen.”
It was warm and cosy even on really chilly days and the big kitchen table was well used for gathering round.
It was warm and cosy even on really chilly days and the big kitchen table was well used for gathering round. We took my elderly parents who struggled with the steps outside, although it does state not suitable for wheelchairs, could maybe add or people with poor mobility. The owners were very pleasant and helpful.
“The cottage was lovely but needed a bit of extra care and attention to detail, but nothing that spoiled the holiday.”
However we were recommended to consider this property by Sykes Cottages as it is all on one level. My mum is in a wheelchair and the reason we decided to get a cottage over Christmas is that she is unable to get into our house and we don't have an accessible toilet. We were looking forward to spending Christmas together somewhere accessible. It wasn't. There are 13 steps up into the cottage. The doors are only just wide enough for a manual wheelchair so would not be accessible for a powered chair. The en suite is too small for the chair too. We had a fabulous time despite these issues, but Sykes need to make sure that properties they are recommending as disabled friendly actually are. I'm very disappointed in this day and age that Sykes do not have filters to find disabled access properties and as we have found, a ground floor bedroom option does not necessarily mean it's accessible.
“We found that the Mistal was exactly as advertised on the Sykes site.”
The property was amazingly spacious and was an ideal location for our planned visits to local Towns and villages never visited before. The facilities within the property were over and above what we expected and the information supplied by the owner prior to arrival was comprehensive and accurate. With four bedrooms / a large kitchen dining area as well as a separate sitting room and large garden, the Mistal offered an excellent venue for our larger family break that included elderly parents. Great Venue that more than met our needs.
“We had an engaging email to welcome us and let us know that the heaters would be on, the fires laid and there would be a nice welcome pack.”
..the welcome pack was there. Someone forgot to say that the cottage was positioned in a local flight path, with a variety of planes overhead. The standard of cleanliness was average and we found it very interesting that we needed to strip bedding and leave everything as tidy as we found it, because the cleaning crew don’t have time to do this...they don’t have enough time to properly sweep, dust and vacuum either. The king bed, in the master bedroom, was indeed a king, and was indeed quite comfortable.
“Fantastic holiday home for our family of 2 adults and 4 children.”
The huge kitchen made every evening perfect for bringing us all together to chat about our day . So much space in a beautiful setting too plus we had every amenity we required and more .
“Old Mistal, Otley, West Yorkshire”
This was such a lovely converted farm building in which to spend a family holiday. Comfortable without being fussy it was easy to relax here after a day sightseeing. The longest drive we did from here was to The Deep, Hull, everything else was within an hours drive. The walk along the bridle path took us up to The Chevin - not at all far. With the current heatwave it was pleasant to return to a cool house. A lovely house on a special location. Well worth a stay here.
“This is a lovely, relaxed converted farm building in which to stay.”
The kitchen is spacious even if we never cooked a full meal here as we were so busy exploring Yorkshire. It was a fine place to come back to, cooler building - a blessing in this current sunny weather. Having lived in Leeds previously we knew the location and proximity to the airport. Didn't disturb us at all - surprised that we still had to wake up our teenagers in the mornings! Beautiful location and house.
“The Old Mistal is a spacious holiday cottage in a picturesque, rural setting, beautifully clean and well appointed.”
The Welcome Pack was a thoughtful addition. The neighbours were very friendly and helpful. The Garden Room with its en-suite bathroom and walk-in wardrobe was well furnished; the other bedrooms would all benefit from both hanging and shelving space with a chair and bedside table(s) if room allows. The house bathroom would benefit from a chair and storage for toiletries plus a bathmat. The garden would also benefit from deckchairs and sun loungers.
“Very well equipped cottage, convenient for both towns and countryside.”
Milk, bread, butter, eggs, tea bags, instant coffee powder and sugar all provided which was nice after a long journey. Very comfortable.
“Wonderful old cottage”
Wonderful location, great cottage, eclectically furnished, wood burning stoves, comfortable beds and it was very clean. Many little "extra"s in the kitchen which meant we didn't have to purchase everything we needed for cooking a meal, etc. The downside: 1. It is in the flight patch for Leeds/Bradford Airport but you don't really notice the noise and the airport is only operational for 18 hours/day. 2. The wood burners had wood supplied for only 1 day and we had to source firewood. It would have been nice if we had been given the option of purchasing a "firewood package" so we didn't have to traipse around Otley looking for it. 3. The en-suite shower was pathetic yet the family bathroom had a great shower! 4. The heating went out during the day and at night and we had no idea how to turn it back on/could not find any controls for the heating, which is November is quite important. However, this did not make our stay any less enjoyable. It would be nice to have more information in the folder regarding the cooker, fires, etc. Overall I would recommend this property to anyone who wants to get away from it all yet be within 10 minutes drive of a small market town (Otley) and/or airport. The road to the cottage is very narrow (Carlton Lane) and the cottage is situated on a bridleway off this road.
“A beautiful cottage in a beautiful location.”
The cottage was warm and cosy on arrival and the welcome pack was very useful. Everything we needed was on hand and contact with the owner was excellent. We had a most enjoyable week.
“A comfortable and homely property and the best equipped cottage have ever rented, catering well for 7 adults.”
Owners were most helpful and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
“If I had a holiday cottage I would hope to be as helpful as Luke & Emma.”

The historical market town of Otley lies on the boundary between North and West Yorkshire and is situated in the beautiful countryside of Lower Wharfedale, just eight miles from Harrogate. Steeped in history, Otley has much to interest the visitor including many events throughout the year to attract all the family. Otley has a street market three times a week, a monthly Farmers’ Market, a wide range of specialist shops, award-winning bakeries and butchers, as well as high street chains and three supermarkets. The many traditional pubs and inns offer good food and a range of beers. Along the River Wharfe, which runs through the heart of the town, is the attractive Riverside Park, offering beautiful walks, whilst the wooded hillside, rocks and moorland of Chevin Forest Park provide spectacular views over the town and the glorious surrounding countryside. Adding to its charm, Otley has its own Bellman who calls out the town’s news and events! Nearby Bolton Abbey is one of the region's most scenic areas and the walk along the river to the 'Strid' is a must.
