The property

Arum is a bright and welcoming bungalow tucked away in the peaceful village of Wakeham on the Isle of Portland.

With its convenient single-storey layout, off-road parking and inviting patio area, it’s a fine choice for couples or small families keen to explore one of England’s most dramatic stretches of coastline. Inside, you’ll find a smartly arranged kitchen with everything you might need for an easy self-catering stay – an electric oven and induction hob, fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher, and washing machine.

There’s even a handy utility room to help keep things tidy after long days out exploring.

The living/dining room provides a relaxed space to put your feet up, featuring an electric fire and Smart TV – ideal for quiet evenings in after a bracing coastal walk. Two restful bedrooms – one double and one twin – offer comfort and calm in equal measure, while the sleek shower room includes a walk-in shower, basin and WC.

Step outside to the small patio, where you can enjoy a morning coffee in the sea air or simply pause to plan the day ahead. From Arum, you can set out on foot to explore the rugged beauty of Portland.

Wander along dramatic cliff paths, discover hidden coves, or visit local landmarks like Portland Bill Lighthouse and the 16th-century Portland Castle.

The island’s unique charm lies in its mix of windswept scenery and maritime heritage – perfect for photographers, walkers and anyone with a love of the coast. A short drive brings you to Weymouth, where a traditional seafront, soft sandy beach and lively harbour await.

For a change of pace, head inland to Dorchester to uncover Roman history, browse independent shops or enjoy a bite in one of its welcoming cafés. For a laid-back escape packed with coastal character, Arum makes a lovely base on the Dorset coast.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £250.

EASTON, PORTLAND

Weymouth 6 miles.

Wakeham is a small hamlet situated in a conservation area on the eastern side of the rugged ‘Isle’ of Portland above the beach at Church Ope Cove. The wide road running through the centre was constructed to accommodate the transport of Portland Stone by horse drawn carts from the numerous local quarries. You can learn all about the stone quarrying at a fascinating exhibition within the local Portland Museum, and then explore the nearby coastal path, a steep walk down to the cove, passing the ruins of the Grade I listed Rufus Castle and St Andrew’s Church along the way. Sheltered Church Ope Cove offers a popular base for diving as there are numerous wrecks to discover off the shore, whilst there are also plenty of opportunities locally for fishing, climbing, sailing and bird watching. Alternatively take the drive down to the very tip at Portland Bill, which juts out into the channel and watch the boats brave their way through the rough waves. Whilst the nearby family friendly, seaside resort of Weymouth offers visitors plenty of family friendly attractions. A most attractive and unique holiday destination at any time of the year.
