  • "Comfortable and convenient small cottage very close to the loch, with great views and with walks straight from the doorstep."

A bit too close to other cottages to have a real "wilderness" feeling, but saw dolphins and sea birds from the window and just outside. Well placed for day trips to Skye, to Eilean Donan, and many scenic locations around Kintail.

Delighted you enjoyed the cottage and its location. Thanks for visiting and enjoying all the beautiful scenery in the surrounding area. Property Owner

  • "Beautiful location couldn’t be better."

The bed is the most comfortable bed ever shame we couldn’t get it in the car!! LOL Mainly spotless just the bathroom tiles felt grubby but realise they are old and property is in process of being updated.Windows in conservatory need some work but again realise it’s a work in progress and doesn’t distract from the property at all. Potato peeler blunt and missing a potato masher but otherwise well equipped although dinner plates a little small. Would definitely go again as it really is an idyllic place.

Delighted you had a great time and enjoyed the wonderful location. Thanks for your comments, it's all helpful to know especially when planning maintenance. The dinner plates are a little smaller than average however they were bought to fit the dishwasher so guests have the option to use this facility if they wish. Very glad you found the location idyllic, thanks for your visit. Property Owner

To awaken each morning,to see sunrise,& to watch the sky at the end of the day, creating shadows over the hills on Skye.was just wonderful .We envied the residents next door. The cottage was clean & comfortable & ideal for a short break . We were able to make the most of a fabulous week,by walking the woodland trails shown in the Balmacara leaflet. We swam in the loch , saw dolphins playing,& even spotted sea eagles on two occasions..Skye was incredible,& easy to reach. We expect that the owner will tidy up the exterior over the winter., but it wasn't a problem,as one reviewer made it out to be. But overall we had a fabulous holiday. Many thanks

I'm delighted that you had such a wonderful week and were able to experience all those aspects of your holiday from Boatman's Cottage. The location is very special and it's great that you were able to take benefit from that in so many ways. Thanks for your lovely review. Property Owner

  • "First impressions count."

This was my second visit to the cottage, so I thought I knew what to expect. I was shocked to see what looked like a building site. I soon realised that the work was actually being done next door but the area was generally untidy and the cottage I was aiming for looked derelict as I approached it. The exterior paintwork was very tired, with window paint peeling, the door dirty and roughly finished. The concrete sills were black and the paving approaching the door dirty. The "garden" was a small area of grass that hadn't been cut for weeks and the cuttings from the last cut were still there. Potted plants/shrubs looked neglected. Having got over the shock of the arrival, the interior was very much as I remembered. It was adequately equipped and clean where it mattered. The Sykes app was extremely useful in reporting minor issues and I was grateful for a call from the owner. Overall, thanks in part to the glorious weather, a good week and the views were as good as I remembered.

Thanks very much for your comments which are very helpful. We needed to accommodate a break in the maintenance schedule earlier this year but this is being caught up with now. I'm sorry your impressions on arrival were not as good as they could have been. It was good to chat with you during your stay and I'm glad you had an enjoyable week's stay. Property Owner

Boatman’s cottage was rundown since Sykes took over, the previous owners kept it tip top The small garden was overgrown and bush blocked view over loch The window frames were rotten and require replacing The facility’s were very limited, no Wi-Fi, no hairdryer, no tea spoons and sparse cutlery, only two cushions were provided Required major TLC On the whole we were disappointed, fortunately the view was the saving grace

Thank you for your comments. The garden and some maintenance on the window is due to take place later this month. There is no wi-fi mentioned in the property description and I understand that there are a good number of teaspoons provided as this has been checked, they are a little larger than average. The following items have all been added/replaced since the change of ownership....Bed, mattress, duvet and all linen, towels, dinner service and many kitchen utensils, toaster, cafetière, rugs in lounge and sun room, television, shower curtain, a number of lampshades and decorative items. The constant upkeep of a property is acknowledged and this is undertaken where possible within any constraints that may occur. Thanks again for your feedback and hope your holiday in many other ways was enjoyable. Property Owner

  • "The bathroom in particular was not very clean, there was a lot of black mould visible, the shower curtain was not particularly clean, I had to clean the shower head as it was full of black mould and not at all pleasant, I really wish I had taken a photograph of it but sadly didn't."

The cutlery and crockery were of the bare minimum and nearly all of the mugs were chipped. The location of the cottage was absolutely beautiful so it was a shame the interior did not deliver. All in all it was not up to the usual standard that we have previously had with Sykes Cottages.

Thank you for your feedback, it is much appreciated and apologies for any inconvenience. It is useful to have the information to make improvements and have ordered some replacement mugs and shower curtain in the meantime. Property Owner

The location of the cottage was ideal. It was quiet but if you wanted busy it wasn’t far away. We also enjoyed the various walks from the cottage. It suited the two of us and our dog, perfectly. It had everything we needed. The bed was very comfortable. The only thing we missed was a sofa but the two chairs were comfortable enough. We also loved the sunroom at the front. There was always something to look at. We also think that wi fi would be something to think about to add to the cottage. Thank you.

Delighted that you had a relaxing week and thank you for your comments. There is now a sofa and the chairs in the sun room have been replaced too so hopefully these will be good improvements. As there is no phone connection wi-fi options are limited for us however 4G is normally strong enough on Vodafone for streaming/videoconferencing etc if required. Thanks again. Property Owner

Instructions on changing temperature of shower would have been useful, as water very hot and couldn’t seem to alter it - TV very temperamental too - would be better to be simple and reliable.

Thank you for your feedback. The cottage is professionally cleaned internally between each guest however will take your feedback in to consideration as it is good to constantly review. The window cleaning procedures have been updated as well recently. For the benefit of future guests the television is operated by a Sky Q remote, instructions are included in the welcome notes. • "There is no doubt that you are paying for the view and location of this cottage, which are both fabulous."

The cottage itself is adequate for two people, but did feel like it needs a bit of TLC. Whilst not a big deal, this was the first cottage we’ve stayed in where there was not some kind of welcome pack and a message from the owner or manager checking things were all okay. Wardrobe needs attention as the doors or top draw do not open freely and it is somewhat wobbly. Bedside table had a layer of dust on it which we had to clean off before use. Kitchen has most of the basic cutlery and appliances and the lounge area was also okay. Sunroom was nice and offered great views over the loch. I think if it had been a wet week then you’d struggle to dry boots and clothes as there is little provision for that. 4G on Vodafone is good if needed. We enjoyed our stay but would not return to this property.

Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay at Boatman’s Cottage, it is very helpful to have your review to help with continuing improvements. With regards to the sticking wardrobe door this has now been attended to. The cottage has only recently been purchased and was returned to the rental market during the recent relaxation of Covid guidelines. For the benefit of future guests I think it is worth pointing out that the following items are all brand new as of May 2021: Bed, mattress, duvet and all linen Towels Dinner service and many kitchen utensils Toaster and cafetière Rugs in lounge and sun room Television Shower curtain A number of lampshades and decorative items Should drying facilities be needed there is a dryer (separate to the washing machine) provided, a clothes airer and a shoe/boot rack all available in the cottage. These are mentioned in the welcome booklet along with other items that can help arriving guests. Thanks again for your feedback and your visit to this beautiful corner of Scotland and I am glad that you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner
