Framed by the rolling Cotswold Hills, the county town of Gloucester features a superb Gothic cathedral (backdrop in Harry Potter films), Victorian Docklands and Roman foundations - heritage sites comfortably mixing with modern-day shops and entertainment. For lots of half-timbered, Tudor houses and a graceful Norman abbey, try Tewkesbury.

Another fantastic town not-to-miss is Cheltenham Spa, known for its striking regency architecture, tree-lined streets, impressive shopping and dining, not to mention its racecourse.
