A Guide to Travelling to Wales

Wondering how to get to Wales? Use our comprehensive guide on travelling to Wales, with information on airports in Wales, trains to North Wales and road information. Travelling to Wales is relatively easy and quick when travelling from the rest of the UK.

Airports in Wales

If you are travelling to Wales from overseas, North Wales is an easy destination for international travellers. Liverpool and Manchester airports are within an hour’s drive of the region, with Anglesey and Caernarfon being smaller airports, ideal for domestic flights.

There are direct flights to Cardiff Airport from around the UK and Ireland several times a day. While this will get you to Wales faster, keep in mind that you’ll have to travel by road or train from Cardiff to North Wales once you arrive, which may end up making your journey time longer.

Trains to North Wales

There are multiple trains to North Wales to choose from, with direct routes from London Euston and Manchester to Llandudno, Bangor and Holyhead available.

While it takes a good deal longer than driving, the train to North Wales is a scenic and relaxing way to make your way to the region, enjoying the dramatic landscape as you travel. Most trains hug the coast above Snowdonia National Park, making for a beautiful journey.

Travel to North Wales by road

From nearby Liverpool and Manchester, it’s best to take the A55 (or N Wales Expy). If you’re travelling from further North – in England or Scotland – the M6 will take you to the M56, where you can then link with the A55.

From the South West, take the M5 on to the M6 to Wolverhampton, then continue on to the M54 and eventually the A5 to Conwy.

From London and the South East, take the M1, then merge with the M6 and A5 in Telford and Wrekin. From here you can follow the A5 to your destination.

To plan your journey we recommend using the AA Route Planner
