Directions

  • Stroll through charming Grange to being your walk, past the ancient monastic farm and follow the road until you find a gate on the left-hand side just before the Borrowdale Gates Hotel.
  • Follow the path to its highest point, then you can temporarily head off-track to explore the beautiful Peace How – overlooking Derwentwater and the historic Castle Crag.
  • Pass through the gate at the end of the woods, and follow the track towards Hollows Farm. Take the right-hand track after around 200m and cross through the camping field to reach a wooded knoll, Holmcrag Wood.
  • The path from here takes you towards the River Derwent, cross the bridge across the first beck and take the trail climbing up to Dalt Quarry. As you head away from the quarry, take the smaller right-hand track which becomes larger further down.
  • Follow the larger track away from the woods and follow the Broadslack Gill up. Below the crags on the left-hand side, find a small path where you have the option to climb Castle Crag which can be seen from Peace How.
  • To tackle Castle Crag; a steep climb leads you to a ladder and a stile, hop over and follow the fence to another stile, turn left and keep climbing. This challenge is rewarded greatly with sublime views across the land below.
  • Back onto the Borger Dalr Trail, follow the grass path until you reach a stone path, head down to the wall and gate. A slim track takes you through woodland and towards a gate and stile, bear left and find another set of gates to go through.
  • Carry on through the woods and quarry works until you find the River Derwent, near to the campsite previously crossed. From here, retrace your steps from the beginning; pass through Hollows Farm and back towards the lovely village of Grange.
