The Royal Mile

The notable area of The Royal Mile stretches between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse in the city’s Old Town. No visit to Edinburgh is complete without exploring this area’s cobbled streets lined with eateries, shops, and attractions!

The top of The Royal Mile is Lawnmarket; this area has ancient origins, which you can see during explorations of the passageways and wynds. You will come across Gladstone’s Land here, a National Trust for Scotland property providing exhibits of its former residents’ lives.

Continue down the high street to spot the hidden gem of Riddles Court and the architectural delight of St Giles’ Cathedral. Just past these rests St Mary’s Street, where there is a range of independent shops and cafes for you to sample.

The Real Mary King’s Close is a must-see when visiting the area. You can embark on one of the costumed tours here, featuring spooky explorations of The Royal Mile’s underground streets!

If you’re travelling with little ones, why not treat them to a visit to The Chocolatarium or the intriguing Museum of Edinburgh?
