See a comprehensive overview of the staycation industry in the past year, including popular destinations, travel trends and who's booking UK holidays.
Almost two-thirds of Brits (63%) are expected to take a holiday within the UK this year, showing strong domestic travel intentions across the population. This indicates that staycations remain a popular choice for British travellers.Â
There appears to be a notable trend among younger people, especially Gen Z, who are the most likely of all age groups to choose a UK staycation.
Last-minute booking behaviour is also on the rise, with nearly a quarter (24%) of breaks being booked within one month of departure. This reinforces the trend toward more spontaneous and flexible holiday planning.
Interestingly, city breaks have overtaken other holiday types to become the most popular among UK holidaymakers.
One of the fastest-growing travel trends is the rise of solo staycations, which have increased by 28% compared to last year. This surge reflects a growing appetite for independent travel within the UK, particularly among Millennials and Gen Z.Â
The shift is likely influenced somewhat by the rise of remote work, which offers greater flexibility and freedom. The momentum is strong - nearly one in three people (29%) say they’re more likely to take a solo break now than they were five years ago - a number that jumps to 60% among Gen Z travellers.
The UK holiday let market continues to show dynamic growth, with several emerging destinations standing out for their strong booking performance and rising popularity.
For new owners looking to enter the holiday let market, focusing on these up-and-coming locations could offer promising opportunities to capitalise on growing traveller demand.

This graph shows the dates that people were searching for on the Sykes website last month. Shaded areas represent key holiday periods such as Christmas, New Year and school holidays.Â
As the summer months and school holidays draw closer, it's clear to see that the focus of UK holidaymakers shifted towards these periods - summer holiday searches rose by 48% month-on-month. As well as this being a popular holiday period, the sustained warmer weather has likely further increased demand.
A notable spike in travel searches occurred for 5–11 July, with a 68% month-on-month increase. This is likely mainly driven by couples seeking a getaway just before the school holidays begin.
Interestingly, searches by couples for that specific week outnumbered family travel searches for any individual week during the summer holidays.
While family demand is more evenly distributed across the longer school break, this concentrated surge suggests a strong preference among couples to travel ahead of the peak season.
Searches for October half term breaks also saw a healthy 24% month-on-month increase, suggesting early planning for autumn getaways.
Interest in Christmas breaks also rose by 22% month-on-month, highlighting that consumers are also thinking about their next big occasion.
The 'ranked' charts are calculated using Sykes' internal data. It takes into account; net occupancy rate (of the time a property is available to be booked, the percentage that is occupied by guests), total number of bookings, average bookings per property and average value per booking.
'Booking value' refers to the amount that a property is booked for, prior to any deductions/expenses etc.
