  • "We definitely overpaid for our 7 night stay at this cottage."

Disappointed overall. The Good: Pleasant living space and bathroom. The Bad: The mattress is horrific! A soft foam topper has been plonked on top of an old and failed mattress which had multiple, questionable brown stains on it. We ended up sleeping on an inflatable mattress for the majority of our stay. Unloading and loading your vehicle is difficult due to limited access and distance to the front of the property. Large vehicles will struggle to drive up David Yard. Limited privacy and noise as the adjacent property is also a holiday home with guests who use the seating arrangement right in front of your kitchen window.

It's a great pity that you found the super king size bed uncomfortable as we haven't had previous comments from our guests to this effect. My husband & I have slept on it & found it very comfortable. The Mattress Topper is memory foam which may or may not be liked by some guests. We have now however, replaced the memory foam with a new mattress topper, which I hope will also be suitable for our guests. On removing the mattress topper we were at a loss to see any stains on the mattress, which can only be viewed on removal of the memory topper which being super king size, was very bulky, very large & quite heavy, & not something usually done by guests. The access to Corner cottage is explained to you by Sykes prior to your arrival. We pay for & provide, free of charge, a Parking Permit for use by our guests in order to facilitate their access. It can be used in both car parks in Sedbergh & both are in fairly close proximity to the cottage. I trust you were able to make full use of this throughout your stay. The nearby narrow lane is not intended for every day use & only used by vehicles for picking up or drop off purposes. The pedestrian alley way makes access to Sedbergh's amenities within very easy walking distance & also for setting off on country walks from the front door. Corner Cottage is very old as are the adjacent properties, & in a quiet position just behind the main street, so many guests prefer this to being on a road further out of town where traffic passes regularly. As you will have observed, Main St. is very narrow. I was unaware of the next door cottage's garden furniure being replaced close to the kitchen window & will endeavour to get this changed. Given the unusual boundaries between the cottages, unfortunately there is't a great deal of space for either cottage to place outdoor seating. All the buildings in the town of Sedbergh are very old & when constructed, I doubt that much consideration was given for relaxation outdoors. We have tried to make the most of the outdoor patio area by providing seating & a table for you to enjoy using, should the weather permit. Your week's stay 18th - 25th August was prime time in the school holidays, over the Bank holiday weekend & with pupils returning to school early September, so guests would normally expect to pay a premium ratefor that time of year, so I consider that the rate you paid was reasonable. • "We booked a last-minute short break to Corner Cottage, the location was great, however we had some pretty serious issues with comfort and cleanlinesss."

    (1) The walk-in shower was completely blocked and could't be used for more than 2 mins without flooding the bathroom. We tried unblocking it ourselves but this didn't work, so we ended up putting a towel on the floor each day and rushing through a quick shower to manage the problem, then ringing the towel out after each shower. (2) The mattress was VERY old, had some large stains in it (including a large, dark brown stain) and had no sheet on. The 'mattress topper' was a piece of yellow foam with a sheet on it to try and mask the problem. Although clean, the sheets had not been dried properly so smelled of damp, especially 2 of the pillowcases. (3) General cleanliness throughtout was pretty poor, including crumbs and a sour 'off milk' smell in the fridge, crumbs in many places around the kitchen, cobwebs throughout the house (some pretty large), dirty cupboard doors and lightswitches. To summarise, the property needs a new mattress, the bathroom addressing and a thorough clean, not just a quick changeover bed-change. We reported these issues to Sykes on day 1, but did not get a reply until day 3 or 4 given that it was the beginning of the school holidays. Sykes eventually spoke to the owner, but we received no acknowledgement or apology and no reimburesment. Very disappointing indeed. I don't normally leave negative reviews as I'd much rather address the issues personally, but in this instance, I feel like the problems were pushed aside and we were dismissed.

I was both disappointed & upset to read your review of our lovely cottage. We pride ourselves on providing a comfortable, clean & welcoming property. Almost without exception our guests have been complimentary & appreciative about their holidays at Corner Cottage & we have received very positive comments, as we did on the weeks leading up to your stay. I feel your review gives a misleading picture of what our guests can expect. Of the photographs you forwarded to Sykes, one expanded one, taken through the window, was not in fact part of our property but of an out house belonging to next door. You allege cleaning deficiencies but failed to report your concerns to our cleaning company, whose contact details are clearly shown in our guest information folder. You would then have received immediate assistance. However, looking at most of your photos, it was quite difficult to ascertain where the minor problems you pointed out, were. I have personally run the shower for several minutes & cannot confirm any overflow. Again, had you contacted the number of our management team about the shower, you would have received assistance & so avoided any possible inconvenience each time you showered. Your point about the mark on the side of the mattress is cosmetic & is always covered by a clean fitted sheet & mattress cover which are always on the bed. I fail to recognise your description of damp sheets & pillow cases & I have not received any other comments to this effect. There has been no reimbursement as we feel you have been provided with excellent value for money, & I have replied promptly to your comments just published regarding your stay from 21st to 28th July. • "A perfect cottage in a great location."

Corner cottage was just what we wanted. Very well looked after, with everything that we needed. Tucked away just off the Main Street, it was close enough to the many places to eat and drink, whilst being quiet and private. Sedbergh itself is well placed for trips, irrespective of whether you are energetic and want to go walking, or were lazy like us. It doesn’t matter that there isn’t parking immediately by the cottage. It’s easy enough to unload at the end of the path, and no problem in parking either on the road or in one of the town car parks. Thoroughly recommended. We hope to be back soon.

It was good to read your great review about Corner Cottage, thank you! We’re very pleased you enjoyed your stay there & your comments are much appreciated. Property Owner

  • "An excellent property in a great location."

The house was clean and tidy. It was well appointed with everything you could need. It’s situated within the town but in a quiet space. Sedbergh is an ideal walking location with plenty to keep you occupied. The owner could examine their check in time- having to wait until 17:00 is unreasonable.

Thank you for your positive feedback & we are very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Corner Cottage. Your comments are very much appreciated . Regarding the check in time…. it is very much in the hands of our management team who organise the cleaning of Corner Cottage & other properties in the Sedbergh area. In order to maintain the high standard of cleaning & maintenance required on the change over day, enough time is required for them to attend more than one property & to undertake the work involved so that the property can be left in the state we know that guests expect & look forward to. I hope you understand. Property Owner

  • "Corner Cottage is a lovely cottage, centrally located for the high street and walks from the doorstep."

The cottage is nicely decorated with a lovely bathroom and plenty of hot water. The setees' are very comfortable with lovely scatter cushions. The bed is in need of a new mattress as a large piece of foam has been placed over the mattress however, one still sinks in the main places. The cottage is in need of a deep clean. The toilet hadn't been cleaned thoroughly for some time and I, myself used half a bottle of bleach cleaning it. There was also a few cobwebs and the oven required a clean. The backs of the dining chairs also required cleaning. Feedback for Sykes: When customers are booking accommodation on your web-site is it possible to have a 'Special Requests' section like most other booking sites. I have a dust allergy and always prefer to inform the owners so that particular attention can be paid to the standard of cleanliness. Thank you.

Thank you for your positive comments concerning Corner Cottage & we were pleased to hear that you thought the cottage was lovely, nicely decorated & comfortable, & in a very good location in Sedbergh. Regarding your negative coments, I am very sorry that you thought that certain things were not up to your standards. It is unfortunate that the mattress topper didn't suit you. Both the cottage & the oven have recently had a deep clean & the bathroom will have been cleaned prior to your arrival, after the previous guests had left on Sunday. If you arrived & found things were not right for you, the phone number for Winder Services is in the information book, & they would, I am sure, have immediately put right your concerns, without your having to seek out cleaning materials in the room we normally keep private. We have previousy had excellent reviews from our recent guests concerning cleanliness & suggest that, having a dust allergy, make sure that this information is communicated to the holiday company so that it can be passed on to the owner & the cleaning company, then your concerns can be acted upon so that your stay & comments, prove to be very satisfactory. • "The location is great, being so near the shops but very quiet."

Parking a short walk away might not be ideal for some, but didn't bother us. The cottage is beautiful: tastefully decorated and very comfortable. Amazing bathroom! I agree with earlier comments about the outside space not being quite as expected, but we didn't need it in October so it wasn't a problem! The only very slight downsides for us were the TV being so hard to work and the volume far too low, and the carbon monoxide detector squeaking loudly each evening with no obvious way to replace the battery. If we owned it we might try to fit a downstairs loo in the understairs cupboard (we did this in our last house), with a replacement store cupboard next to the fridge. A blackout blind in the bedroom would really be great, as there are several very bright lights on all night close outside. All in all, a great place to stay.

Thank you for your useful comments. The carbon monoxide detector issue has been rectified & shouldn’t now be a problem for future guests. We were delighted to hear that over all, your stay at Corner Cottage was great! Property Owner

It is in a fantastic position to visit both the Dales and the Lakes and had all the facilities we needed for our two week stay. (We noted that prevoius comments had been taken onboard by the owners and rectified). We had lovely meals at the Red Lion and Dalesman pubs. A reasonable size Spar supermarket is found as you come into Sedbergh together with local shops and market days mean you have everything local. Having booked the holiday before we changed our car to an EV we were concerned about parking a short way from the property but discovered fast EV changing points within a six mile radius of the property (eg.M6 services, Dent Village, Kendal, Kirkby Lonsdale, Hawes). We had no problems charging whilst exploring the towns and countryside as several car parks had EV points. We would certainly recommend Corner Cottage and will return when we visit the area again.

As I have balance issues which vary day to day this was good for me so my husband could go off walking on his own. 2 minor points which would be ok for most people, no handrail on the stairs so it was hands & knees and the wet room shower was too powerful for it's own good and crept round the end of the screen soaking the room & heading for the carpet outside the door. Had to use towels to stop that happening but screen perhaps could do with an extra angled bit on it!

Thank you very much for your feedback. We will certainly look into the handrail situation. We are new owners & are unaware that it has been a problem. As for the shower, we will follow that up, though to date, that problem hasn't been drawn to our attention by previous occupants. About the location

SEDBERGH

Kendal 11.5 miles; Kirkby Lonsdale 11.8 miles, Hawes 15.8 miles.

The attractive old market town of Sedbergh (pronounced Sed-Ber), with its old-world atmosphere, is not only set in the magnificent western dales of the Yorkshire Dales National Park but is also close to the rugged eastern fells of the Lake District. The town, with its narrow streets, little shops, traditional pubs, famous school dating back to 1525 and its 12th century church, has been a thriving community for hundreds of years, with a market dating from the 13th Century. Leading from Sedbergh is Dentdale, the jewel of the Yorkshire Dales with its rolling hills and dry-stone walls, stretching 14 miles from the windswept moors below Whernside to the confluence of the Rivers Dee and Rawthey. At the centre of the dale is Dent, with its cobbled streets, which has existed since Norman times and nearby Dent railway station is on the renowned Settle-Carlisle railway line. There are three golf courses nearby, as well as tennis, riding, and fishing, and the area is a paradise for walkers, ramblers, runners, and cyclists. This, together with the tranquillity of the surrounding valleys, the two National Parks and it being England's book town, makes an ideal year-round holiday destination.
