  • "Very large property, perfect for bringing anyone disabled and very comfortable."

The dogs had a huge private garden, we had two car parking spaces and only a short walk to the pub. This made life easier and more comfortable for us.

  • "This a great base for exploring the local region, more than enough space and fantastic enclosed garden."

York is within easy reach, either driving or using the park and ride, the east coast seaside resorts are only an hour away as well.

  • "We loved Thistle, the middle cottage of three in a barn conversion on a suburban road through Barlby."

The property was clean, spacious, beautifully decorated and well-equipped. Lots of extra little touches were very much appreciated - plenty of things to do on a rainy day! Parking was ample for two cars and the garden was safe and fully enclosed for our dog. The bedrooms worked for us, but might not suit everyone - the upstairs ensuite master sleeps 4, with another upstairs double room and a downstairs single. Having two bathrooms and a downstairs loo was great and, although there was an issue with a leak from one of them, this was dealt with quickly and efficiently by the owner who lives next door.

  • "Spacious property in a great location to explore the whole region."

Dog friendly enclosed garden. Very well equipped and carefully arranged. Unfortunately we agree with a previous reviewer that all the mattresses are extremely uncomfortable. As there were only two of us we thought we could just choose the best. We ended up using the spare duvets to make the bed more comfortable. Not so much Goldilocks, more The Princess and the Pea. A bed topper might be the answer.

Nicely located for easy trips into York and Selby with regular busses stopping a couple of minutes walk away. The mattresses on the beds weren't quite to our liking but that could just be personal preference! Would definitely book again if travelling to York or surrounding areas.

35 mins on the bus from across the road.Local shop 10 mins walk. Lovely house. Just query that the downstairs bedroom for a person with mobility issues could have a wet room shower or general shower in the downstairs toilet area. Plus lighting could be brighter in the lounge and downstairs bedroom. For our family though it was perfect.

  • "This was a lovely quiet relaxing visit."

Our main visit to Yorkshire was to see family and friends so we were not tourists as such. If you are a tourist then we could see there are lots of visitor attractions. If the weather is inclement lots of things are provided in the Thistle holiday accommodation. There is a pub, fish and chip shop and Budgens all close by.

  • "Lovely clean spacious holiday cottage in a great location."

We were impressed with all the ‘extras’ provided tea, coffee, milk, biscuits, tissues, dishwasher tablets ,soaps etc. Great to have a real cot, Highchair, stair gates etc for our granddaughter too. We would have liked better lighting especially in the downstairs bedroom and lounge, as it was far too dim even with lamps. Would also suggest mixer taps downstairs especially in the cloakroom. We would stay again.

  • "The property itself would have been fine."

However the despotic nature of the owner, who turned out to be a control freak made it extremely difficult for us. The weather in UK, for the fortnight we were there was the coldest for many years on occasions at minus 5. The heating AND hot water timings of coming on and going off was completely controlled by her. We were unable to get showers before 7 am because the hot water was not available until then. The heating came on about the same time. This was very inconvenient. During the days if I wanted instead to have a shower, again the water wasn’t on or the heating until gone 4:30. I did phone and ask about having the heating on earlier, as I explained I was sat with my coat on, but was instead given a lecture on the price of oil, and was reminded that they were described as holiday cottages and as such we shouldn’t really need heat in the day as we should be out ‘holidaying’ !!! I was directed to an electric heater which naturally was totally inadequate. Although my diagnosis of lung cancer the day before we went to the cottage, wasn’t the owners fault. When I asked her if my sister could come down from Scotland to see me and stay a few nights. She seemed most put out even though it’s a six birth cottage. So she directed me to Sykes. I rang Sykes who couldn’t understand why she’d done that. The man at Sykes was most helpful and said it was fine. When I called her back to tell her, she didn’t offer any bedding for my sister, who did end up having to bring her own. However the owner did ask how much more I’d been charged, and said it should be more because that’s how Sykes charged. She seems most put out when I explained it didn’t work like that. I’ve rented many cottages over the years a lot of these with Sykes. I’ve never left a negative review. I’ve never had to. This time was an exception thankfully.

  • "Huge barn/cottage four mins drive from Selby."

Walking distance from local shop selling fresh pastries and dog friendly pub with food and pool table. Train or bus to York 45 mins. Hour and half from Scarborough, Filey and Whitby. Cottage is warm and roomy with disabled loo and downstairs single room plus two large rooms and bathrooms upstairs. Well equipped clean and nice little touches. Good sized garden with a Wendy house! TV and wifi, even a caffetiere. Milk and tea coffee provided. The lighting downstairs could be brighter (too dark for the jigsaw!) but they’ve added lamps already so I can’t see how to improve it. Owners nearby for any problems. Highly recommended for a family getaway touring Yorkshire
