"This is our second visit to the cottage this year."
A delightful cosy cottage in a rural setting between Grosmont and Goathland.
"This cottage was the best we have stayed in."
Very clean, very comfortable and in a brilliant position with fantastic views and walks. Some nice little touches such as the fresh milk and bread awaiting us on arrival. Very informative booklets informing us on how to use heating, internet, to, immersion, etc. we would love to come and stay again a, perhaps next summer. Wonderful weekend.
"A lovely cosy cottage set in stunning scenery full of wildlife with an added bonus of steam trains passing now and again."
Thanks to the owner for the delicious flapjacks she left for us. We would love to come back again.
Glad you enjoyed your break. Sally my cleaner makes a goof flap jack and chocolate brownies. I shall pass on your thanks Property Owner
"Charming, comfortable cottage in a fantastic location for walking and watching the steam trains."
"We have enjoyed a happy and very comfortable few days at Chapel Cottage Excellent position for walking and enjoying the NYMR."
Very clean and well maintained, the selection of books and games a real treat. Oh, and not forgetting the amazing flapjack!! We will certainly return, we need to find all the carved mice at Goathland church. Thank you
"House was comfortable and met all our needs."
The only issue was lack of Wi-Fi. House in a beautiful location. Ideal for a relaxed holiday. Close to many excellent places to visit. Especially "train buffs".
"General maintenance of a very poor standard."
Skirting boards coming away from walls, tiling cracked in bathroom, mold around bath trims, no 2 doors same colour, wallpaper peeling on staircase, loose post on staircase, wallpaper badly done, tiling in kitchen extremely untidy, sealant around fireplace terrible. I have photos of these items if you want me to send them. I know this is a very old cottage but the standard of maintenance is terrible and well below what I would expect. Brian Stanworth.
thank you for your comments. We are expecting to close for maintenance as the bathroom and staircase were our next maintenance jobs. I am sorry you feel that it is such a poor standard. Property Owner
"We really enjoyed our stay at Chapel Cottage."
The scenery is idyllic and the cottage was clean and comfortable. Being so close to where the steam railway runs is a joy! I think the only thing that would have been nice in the cottage is a dishwasher but appreciate the space in the kitchen probably doesn't allow for this. It didn't however detract from our visit.
"We very much enjoyed our stay at Chapel Cottage - it was peaceful, cosy, very well equipped and in a superb location for a relaxing holiday."
The scenery is beautiful and there are lots of walks from the doorstep. Even the weather was kind to us - what more can you ask for?
"We had a great stay at Chapel Cottage."
Great base in the middle of the North York Moors, with plenty of walking and cycling routes nearby, and right next to the NYMR. The cottage had everything we needed for a lovely stay and the homemade flapjacks kept us going all week. Thank you for a lovely stay
"Warm & cosy quirky cottage."
Towels & linen smelt lovely. Lots of great walks from the door. Loved watching the birds from the window. Great 3 tick cottage.
"Microwaveable bowls would be an advantage."
Remote controls for TV and Set Top box unreliable but both could be controlled ok on the units.
Thank you for the update which has now been hopefully resolved Property Owner
"Had a lovely stay at Chapel cottage it has everything you need."
It's a bit tired and in need of an upgrade with four people there the sofas are not big enough the quilts on the beds are too thin for colder weather. It's in need of a freezer because there are no supermarkets near by. But this said enjoyed our stay.
I am very sorry that you feel that the cottage did not offer the quality that you expected. The quilts were new on the beds the day before you arrived so your comments will be taken and I will look at the tog value and increase them, I shall also increase the number of fleeces provided for those who still need a little more heat Property Owner
"Great cottage, excellent walking around the area and good amenities either a walk or short drive away."
"This stay was brilliant."
Lovely cottage in an idyllic location. We got to see steam trains right past our window and lots of wildlife right by us including deer, pheasant and rabbits again right outside our window! The cottage is lovely and has everything you need for a weeks stay. It was homely, clean and felt really cosy. The owner set up the high chair and travel cot for us as they knew we were arriving late which was really helpful. Valley Esk is a wonderful location close to many different attractions. Grosmont is a 20min walk away and in the other direction you could walk to Goathland. Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay and Scarborough are a fairly short drive away for the beach and sea. Hutton Le Hole is picturesque and definitely worth a visit. Thanks for a wonderful stay!! This cottage definitely exceeded our expectations!
"This was our third stay at Chapel Cottage."
It is set in an idyllic situation. It is in a row of Victorian cottages which look out over the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. We really enjoyed the fact that, once we had arrived, we hardly had to use the car at all. There are lots of walks from the doorstep, including to Grosmont, Goathland, Egton Bridge and Sleights. If you love railways and the countryside, as we do, it is an ideal place to stay. The owner is very helpful when you contact her and the cottage is homely and comfortable. The owners of the other cottages are all very friendly too.
"The cottage is in a beautiful area with lovely walks on the doorstep."
It is comfortable, some fixtures are a little tired but not enough to spoil our stay. The only problem for us was the lack of an enclosed garden, our dog is well behaved with good recall but this wouldn't be suitable for a dog who likes to wander unless you take them on a lead for every toilet trip. We had a lovely stay and will be back!
"This cottage is set in beautiful surroundings."
The steam railway added to its beauty, taking us back in time. I would highly recommend this cottage for those looking for a quiet countryside holiday. There’s plenty to see and do all within a short drive. The cottage is equipped with everything for you to enjoy your stay the attention to detail is great.
"A charming comfy cottage in a very special location."
We had a truly memorable short stay, so much so we hope to return for a longer visit. So much to see and do round and about, coast or rural, made even more magical by the steam trains puffing by. Wonderful photo opportunities! Always felt like coming home.
"Lovely warm and comfortable cottage, had all the facilities we needed."
Had a great week at Chapel cottage, lovely walks with our 2 dogs straight from the door.
"Lovely setting very comfortable close to all local amenities and woodland walks, made special by steam train passing daily."
"Niebours were very friendly the location suited us down to the ..."
Niebours were very friendly the location suited us down to the ground l looked forward every day to seeing the trains go past and even traveld on one the owner was very helpful well done allison and many thanks
"For me and my two grandchildren it was just what we wanted."
Nice cottage tucked away in the North Yorkshire Moors with plenty of places to experience. Nth yorks steam railway extremely close a sight certainly worth seeing. The coast not far to travel but above all during this Covid 19 we were self contained and safe. I would certainly recommend this.
"Lovely cosy cottage just as described nice & warm despite the blustery weather."
Great location with lots of walks on the doorstep. Enjoyed a lovely Sunday Lunch at the Mallyan Spout Hotel ( recommended by neighbour) As well as the walks we visited Pickering, Whitby & Saltburn by the sea. There is a bit of a detour if the ford is impassable. Would recommend this cottage for a relaxing break. We had a online grocery shop delivered from Sainsburys.
"A cosy cottage with smashing views great fun for train fans just the place for a peaceful break"
"Lovely cottage in a beautiful area."
We know the area well so it was great to be back. Alison was so helpful giving us some tips for best walk to see the steam trains and Grosmont engine shed. Cottage was spotless and had absolutely everything we needed. Brilliant stay. Highly recommend.
"Comfortable little cottage, rustic in charm."
Very wet week but still very cosy sat by the fire, ideal place to get away from it all.
"Such a cosy cottage in a beautiful valley."
So peaceful, great walks and lovely watching the steam trains go by.
"A very peaceful and pretty area to stay in."
"Lovely charming cottage with plenty of walking straight from the cottage."
There were only two little niggles, a mop would have been handy to clean kitchen floor and a better companion set for the open fire. So saying these did not spoil the holiday.
"Had a lovely time at Chapel Cottage."
Was so relaxing and loved watching the steam Trains go past the front window. That was definatley the highlight of my 9 year old autistic sons break. Would defo go back.
"Absolutely beautiful cottage in the most amazing location!"
Perfect for our little family and dog to have lots of walks, watch the trains go by and venture to the coast!!
"A lovely, cosy cottage with everything you need."
Ideal location for great walking without taking car out.
"Lovely homely cottage in a wonderful setting."
"Had a wonderful week’s break at Chapel Cottage."
The cottage met every requirement we needed. We hope to return in the near future.
"A very nice little cottage in a very nice location !"
"Over all we had a good holiday at this cottage."
We had just one major problem with a broken light fitting, but after a phone call that evening to the owner, an electrician arrived the next morning and fixed it. Very satisfied with that response. We have just two minor things to bring to your attention. First: And this can be a problem at many cottages we visit, and that is the lack of sufficient storage space for food items in the kitchen. This cottage was no different from 95% of cottages we have rented in that it had insufficient storage cupboard. What cupboards it did have, and it did have quite a lot of them, BUT the were almost all being used for Plates, pans, etc. All of which is needed and it was well appointed with these things, just lack of space for the items we wished to store. Second: This is basically a very minor item. The sink in the bathroom had a crack in it. It didn't stop us using it, but I feel it would be better if it was not there. I have no wish to be negative about this cottage because that would NOT be a true reflection of it, I would say that we 98% satisfied with it.
"This cottage was very relaxing and in a good area for walking."
Very peaceful and quiet.
"Cottage was very tired and was ready for decorating throughout."
A large crack in bathroom hand basin, bath very worn on the bottom, toilet wouldn’t flush on the day after we arrived. Rang owner and she called a plumber. Plumber put a new part in the toilet and all was well until on the Wednesday evening it would not flush again. Thursday morning rang owner told her we were already out of the cottage for the day and would not be there to let the plumber in. Two neighbours had keys for access. We returned back to the cottage to find a card through the letterbox from the plumber saying called today but no one was in. From Wednesday evening to departure on Friday morning we were filling a bucket of water to flush the toilet. The bathroom suite is ready for replacing. I would not stay in this cottage again and would not recommend this cottage. Fantastic setting but cottage needed some money spending on it.
"We loved the location of this sweet cottage."
Set down in Esk Valley, It was just perfect for us. No parking straight next to the cottage, but we were made aware of this beforehand and there is a little car park a few houses down. Plus you go in the back entrance, which is not a problem at all. We could look out in the mornings and see the cows and calves in the field in front of the cottage. From the bedroom window, there was a clear view of the rail tracks for the steam trains, we looked out on numerous occasions and watched it go by in awe. Plus in the next-door-but-one neighbours front garden, we watched every morning the birds on the feeders, regularly spotting and watching a woodpecker. We are keen bird watchers and this was just so lovely for us. From the car park there is a footpath which was an old rail track, which can take you two ways. One way you can walk to Grosmont, which has a fantastic steam railway station and the other way we walked as far as Goathland which was lovely going through a sheep field, past a stream/beck and runs over rocks and through woodlands and is very picturesque. The whole area is beautiful and we thoroughly enjoyed going out every day from this cottage. The only thing we were sad about, is that we were only there for 4 nights, we wanted to stay much longer. Hoping to come back and stay longer next time.
"The information about Chaple Cottage was good exept for the fact that mobile phone contact was not any good and the wi-fi was not conected but this did not bother me but it could be important."
The area and location are just great the North Yorkshire Railway runs just a field away. The weekend was very enjoyable plus some good pubs mear by.
"All the essentials worked in this cottage, heating, wifi, etc."
The location is lovely - peaceful and a view of steam engines. Would return.
"A most relaxing place and the cottage was well equipped for everything we needed."
Even the weather was better than forecast. There is little to zero phone signal bur WiFi was fine.
"We had a fantastic time, such a lovely cottage and village."
"Had a great time."
Great communication with the owner. Would love to stay again - great location for walks and watching the steam trains.
"Great quiet location, ideal for walking and steam trains very close by which can be photographed from the main bedroom window."
Also very close to the Grosmont to Goathland rail trail footpath.
"The hedge needed cutting so you could see the steam trains from the front room."
The overall maintenance of the cottage was a bit poor.
"Small point the lighting in the sitting room needs up grading it was impossible to read and sew at night"
"The only problem was that there was insufficient information regarding the facilities in the cottage (TV, DVD etc) Although we sorted it all out reading through the visitors guest book remarks some had not been able to."
Apart from that the cottage was exactly as we expected, very comfortable and very clean, with one exception, and that is the oven. It was filthy! Presumably the cleaner is not asked to clean to this level. It is a shame because each time the oven is used the kitchen filled with smoke when the door was opened.

An attractive mid-terrace cottage nestled amidst beautiful countryside, in the small hamlet of Esk Valley, near Grosmont.
Originally an old railway property, it is the perfect spot for a relaxing holiday, with the advantage of watching the steam trains on the North York Moors Steam Railway passing close by.
Entry to the cottage is via the back door, into the spacious kitchen with a dining area to one side.
This bright and cheerful room leads into a charming sitting room, with comfortable sofas set around a cosy open fire, ideal for warming your toes on a winters evening!
With a lovely homely feel, the cottage feels warm and inviting.
Upstairs there are two bedrooms, both with superb views over the glorious scenery.
The immediate surrounding countryside is a haven for nature lovers and a walkers paradise, with a network of public footpaths from the doorstep, including the popular Rail Trail that takes you to Goathland.
The small village of Grosmont can be reached either on foot or by winding country lanes and is the home to the steam railway.
Wander around the engine sheds, watch the trains puffing in and out of the station, or partake in tea and cakes in one of the tempting tea rooms, including the converted school.

About the location
Whitby 5 miles.
The pretty village of Grosmont sits at the junction of the River Esk and Murk Esk in the midst of striking North Yorkshire Moors scenery. The area is characterised by its narrow roads, steep hills and scenic views over valleys of patchwork fields and wide-open expanses of moorland. Grosmont itself lies in the ‘Heartbeat Country’ and is famous for being the home of the North York Moors Steam Railway. The Railway has been preserved and run by enthusiasts since 1973 and today carries upwards of 300,000 passengers a year. The village has a general store, post office, book shop, art gallery, cafes and a pub. It makes a great base for exploring the many pretty farming villages along the Esk Valley and the wider North York Moors National Park, as well as the North Yorkshire Coastline with characterful harbour towns and villages.
