"Beautiful cottage with a definite wow factor in a fantastic location."
Spotlessly clean and lovely furnishings. Great walks from the door step and a good choice of pubs in Ashover within walking distance. Will definitely be back!
"Thank you for a gorgeous stay."
We stayed for a wedding nearby and we only wish we had more time to spend at the property. Gorgeous location with a gorgeous home. Incredibly comfy beds and the most relaxing setting. Ideal for a total switch off and re charge. Owner Lesley was so welcoming and friendly and super helpful. Thank you again.
"We had a very nice week here with our 3 teenage grandchildren, however it probably wasn’t the best location for them as apart from walks there isn’t much going on and we would have been better in Matlock itself or Bakewell where they could have gone off on their own to the shops etc."
The Wi-Fi wasn’t very good in the bedrooms and the TV was very basic but we all made the best of it as it is a delightful cottage and the owners who live next door are lovely. Just a couple of constructive suggestions would be for more lighting in the kitchen which is very dark and a new dishwasher.
"Lovely cottage in a beautiful setting."
The little things matter! Wine, cake and a very important bottle of milk in the fridge. We had taken dish washing materials but, again, these had been thoughtfully provided. The standard of everything in the cottage was very high and easily accommodated 4 adults, 1 child and an infant. A cot and high chair had been provided too. The cottage certainly outdoes the photos. Perfectly located for all the places we wanted to visit in Derbyshire. Thankyou to Lesley.
"A lovely comfortable property with lots of space and a nice outdoor seating area."
Beds were comfortable, lots of comfy seating and nice furnishings. Nice to be able to read about the history of the cottage and surroundings too. Easy to find following very clear instructions. The owner was easy to contact and friendly and was really quick to help with queries. A plumbing accident was dealt with promptly and with minimum fuss. All in all a lovely cottage that I wouldn’t hesitate to return to or recommend to others.
"We had a wonderful stay with our family at The Old Stables."
Brilliant location with lots to see and do in the area. Kitchen was well stocked which included dishwasher/washing tablets. Thank you for the thoughtful hamper.
"Fantastic Holiday Home, it’s far better than the pictures, Lesley is extremely helpful & very friendly gave us a fab recommendations especially for Sunday lunch at The Kelstedge Inn."
Would def go back. We were a party of 8 plenty of room for us all. Thank You Lesley for a wonderful stay.
"Lesley is an excellent, welcoming hostess, there only when needed."
This is an exceptional, well maintained property with lots of space for a family get together, there were 4 generations of us ranging from 23 months to 87 years old and we never felt overcrowded. The remote location is peaceful and relaxing. Chesterfield is a 15 minute drive away. The only suggestion I would have would be to consider investment in an electric car charger for the property (the nearest rapid chargers are in Chesterfield)
"We had a lovely time at the Old Stables."
It is a perfect place to get away from it all. The property is very high standard, spotless, spacious and very comfortable. We were a party of seven and there was plenty of room. The host met us in the drive and made us feel very welcome.
"The Old Stables at Ashover is an amazing house set in beautiful countryside."
There was nothing we needed that wasn't provided and everywhere was very clean and comfortable. We met the owner on arrival who was friendly and had kindly left us a bottle of wine and an amazing lemon drizzle cake. We would definitely recommend this accommodation and would love to return in warmer weather.
"Beautiful property, had everything we needed."
Cleaned to a very high standard, very comfortable. Great location and walking distance to pubs. Will definitely return! Thank you.
"We had a wonderful stay at The Old Stables."
The decor, cleanliness and quality of this beautiful house is outstanding. Lesley is a perfect host, from extras like wine, cake & milk to welcome you to excellent communication. The house is situated in beautiful countryside within walking distance to some fabulous pubs and a short trip away from great landmarks and towns to visit. We will definitely return. Thank you.
"Photos do not do the property justice."
The place is well presented and cosy. Very impressed with heating and water temperature. We had a wonderful weekend away at this cottage with 4 couples. Plenty of walks in the local area of all difficulties. Easy and safe to walk to the local village. Pubs in area are very average. 10/10 would recommend.
"As property sleeps eight people it would be handy if there was a larger fridge or at least a table top drinks fridge."
A larger screen and updated television would be a nice addition. The property is beautifully maintained and every comfort you need. The owner is extremely helpful and will do everything to ensure your stay is first class. The location is very peaceful but handy for the main road into Matlock, Bakewell and for visiting Chatsworth. We visited the farm shop for lunch one day and it was excellent and thoroughly recommend.
"Lovely comfortable house on the edge of Ashover."
Well equipped and furnished to a high standard. Good communication from the owner
"Property perfectly located for walkers."
Lots of public footpaths in the area. Easy to find. Nice helpful owners. Hugely spacious interior and exterior. Cosmetically charming. Garden has large table with plenty of seating. Parking is good. We took two cars and had no issues. Mostly quiet with the exception of a repetitive beeping coming from the security keypad of the adjacent property. Very annoying at night when windows are open. Nice welcome note and complimentary bottle of wine and cake etc. Including 10% off in local farm shop cafe. Which was also high quality and well stocked. Kitchen facilities were brilliant. Plenty of crockery and cutlery. Dishwasher and washer dryer easy to use. 'Sharp' Knives on the blunt side (no suprise for rented accommodation). Cooker is amazing. Double oven excellent. Plenty of food/drink storage. Plenty of seating around dining area. Very spacious and comfortable. Huge living room. Plenty of seating. Very comfortable and cozy. Living room TV on the small side for such a large room. Awful sound quality. Free to view TV is good. Internet connection poor, bit of a let down for accommodation that sleeps so many, but understandable given property location. Downstairs shower nice and spacious. Shower screen allows water to splash everywhere, meaning wet floor and foot towel. Nice soaps and lotions. Tap is a bit leaky. Front door very difficult to open and close. Used back door instead. Somewhat of a potential fire hazard, but understandable given the recent extremes of temperature in UK. Bedrooms spacious. Beds and bedding comfortable. Odd number of TVs in rooms, but we didn't expect any, so still a nice suprise. Shared/family bathroom is very big. Toilet cistern seems to be running however. Had to adjust ballcock a few times to remedy this. Ensuite is lovely. Nice big bath. Plenty of hot water on supply. Outlet drains a bit slow. From the outside there appears to be a wasp nest in the guttering between master bedroom with Ensuite and double bedroom. Wasps left us alone, but could be heard in the dressing area of the master with Ensuite. Not a huge issue, worth mentioning as sometimes structural issues can result. 09:30 checkout and being asked to strip all beds is a little early and s little odd. Not something we've experienced before. Overall a lovely and restful stay in a beautiful, comfortable, clean property and environment.
"Very good accommodation with everything you need, short journey to Matlock and short walk into village."
Farm shop cafe is great for breakfast.
"It was well situated to visit tourist attractions and was very comfortable when we got back"
"What a wonderful place, we loved every minute in the cottage, our only regret is not spending more time there."
Perfect village location, everything was just marvelous.
"A really lovely place to stay."
Lots of room but it felt cosy and everything was high quality. The setting is very pretty and feels like you’ve escaped yet you’re still near to plenty of interesting places to visit.
"A lovely place to stay."
Quiet byway just outside of ashover village and a short walk to any of 4 pubs, farm shop and coffee shops. We had everything we needed for ages 3 to 73yrs and were very comfortable. Would highly recommend a stay here for easy access to everything the Peak District has to offer.
"Cottage was absolutely beautiful."
Cleanliness second to none. Extremely comfortable and homely with everything you could wish for in a holiday let. The owner was very friendly and helpful and kindly left some provisions in the kitchen which were much appreciated. We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful cottage. Thank you for everything.
"We stayed in the Old Stable with another family for 3 nights."
Absolutely beautiful house. Lots of room for us all. We were lent two travel cots and high chairs which was really helpful. The Old Stables is in a lovely little village with a shop, cafe, pubs and play park. Lots of walks. Lots to do in the area as well and the area is beautiful. Thank you for our holiday!
"Fabulous property in a great location."
Spotlessly clean,great rooms.
"Accommodation very comfortable and clean."
We all felt covid safe. Owners extremely accommodating and friendly. Perfect location and a good base for touring the area. Thank you for the welcome pack - especially the lemon drizzle cake. We found the freezer and especially the fridge to be far too small. As the cottage accommodates 8 people there should be a much larger fridge as we could not get all the provisions we had brought with us in. Only one side of the toaster was working and the other side takes ages to toast. These are purely comments which perhaps could be taken on board and certainly do not distract from the excellent accommodation.
"Lovely and well located property, and extremely well cleaned on arrival."
Would certainly recommend it.
"Cottage beautiful in a great location Thank you"
"An outstanding property in an idyllic surrounding."
We all thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and would highly recommend this property.
"The great quality of the furnishings and furniture made this an enjoyable experience."
The location was perfect for visiting Chatsworth and Hardwick Halls. Local pubs were good for great meals.
"1. Please can you make sure there are 2 contact numbers available."
When we arrived we could not get hold of owner. 2. Duvets were far too hot! Summer ones required as it is very hot upstairs! Could do with some fans too. 3. Blackout blind needed in large en-suite room as was very light. 3. Could do with Amazon fire stick so you can watch films, etc. TV was quite small for size of room.
"We loved the Old Stables."
.. Had a wonderful time, the kids loved it too. It's been very nicely converted and the grounds are magnificent. Lesley is lovely and very communicative. I gave it four out five primarily because check out time was 9:30am on the Sunday morning. I've never had to check out so early in my many times using Sykes and other accommodation websites. Lesley explained that there was another booking due on the day we left, but check in isn't until 4:30, so we all felt 7 hours turn around time to be a bit unnecessary, even during these Covid times. Otherwise, excellent!
"Refrigerator and freezer too small for the number of guests."
Wifi dropped out a few times. Lounge TV needs udating, very slow to respond to the remote control
"The accommodation was fantastic - beautifully high standard throughout and just a pleasure to stay in such a lovely place."
Lesley was so helpful and welcoming - we definitely would love to visit again.
"The Stables is a perfect holiday getaway."
Beautiful property and location.
"This property is furnished beautifully and maintained to a very high standard."
It is in a beautiful setting and the owner was very welcoming. The extra touches of home baking and wine for when we arrived were very much appreciated.
"The cottage was beautiful and was well equipped."
It also sat in a beautiful edge of the Peak District making everywhere easily accessible.
"Lovely cottage, well equipped and very comfortable."
We enjoyed our weekend of lovely local walks.
Great location. Clean and well maintained.
"Nice & peaceful location, cottage has been refurbished to a high standard."
There were great views over the fields, with some nice walks direct from the cottage out into the dales. The location was really good for Matlock, which was surprisingly close, Matlock has a superstore with a petrol station and the location is ideal for going to the likes of Bakewell & Buxton. Ashover is a very picturesque village and has 3 decent public houses about 10 minutes walk away. All off the pubs did decent cask beers and the food was decent and not really expensive. Locals we spoke to were really friendly.
"It couldn't exceed my expectations because we have been there before!"
And we have booked again for the same time next year. So that tells you a lot. Very comfortable, excellent for a large party, nice location, and the owner is very friendly and helpful while being absolutely non intrusive.
"The cottage was very comfortable and well appointed."
The information folder was very well thought out with great suggestions for walks and places to visit. The bedrooms were all a good size and the bathroom facilities adequate. We really enjoyed our short break and the owner left us some lovely mince pies which we thoroughly enjoyed. The only thing that could be improved is that the only shower in the property is downstairs in the hallway. It would be nice given that there is space for there to have been a shower upstairs with the bedrooms instead of two baths.
"We had a brilliant weekend at the Old Stables."
The accommodation was perfect, immaculate and in a lovely location. The owners were lovely and ensured we had everything we needed for our stay.
"A lovely cottage, beautifully presented with lovely attention to detail."
Lesley was very helpful and welcoming.
"Lesley the owner was so friendly and helpful accommodation peaceful tranquil ..."

"Great location, friendly owners, good pubs and food,1st class accomadation, walks from doorstep."
"Stayed here as a group of friends with young children."
Its a beautiful place which is even better than the pictures. The rooms were beautiful and spacious and everywhere decorated to a high spec. The owners were friendly, helpful and relaxed! Would definitely recommend.
"Lesley the owner was very helpful and quick to answer any questions we had."
Our stay in the old stables was great, the location is beautiful and the accomodation suited our party size perfectly (4 adults and 4 children). Worth mentioning is the kitchen, it was very well equipped and had all we needed to cook up some delicious family meals which were enjoyed around the large dining table. We’d recommend staying here to friends and family.
"Fabulous, spacious and spotless holiday accommodation with lovely big comfy beds."
A great location with three pubs just down the lane and the farm shop for a delicious cooked breakfast and a very warm welcome. Some beautiful walks from the doorstep with amazing views and within easy reach of two ridge walks, plus many other places of interest. Altogether great! A lovely village with very friendly people.
"Lovely spot and lovely property."
All modern and was suitable for a large group of 8. Big shower downstairs which we weren’t expecting but was a welcome addition. Plenty of utensils in the kitchen with enjoyable lemon cake and games in the lounge. We used the welcome book to go for a walk and then ate at the local village pub which was fantastic. All in all a great weekend break and we wouldn’t hesitate to return. Many thanks
"Beautiful holiday cottage gorgeous quiet location within walking distance to shop, tea room and pubs all very friendly also near to all major attractions in the area."
The location is excellent. Cottage is warm comfortable and has the wow factor would book again in a heartbeat. The owner Lesley made us feel very welcome and even took the time out to source something we had forgotten.
"This accommodation is superb."
Really beautiful, finished to a high specification. The photos do not do it justice!!
"The Old Stables was a stunning venue beautifully presented and fitted to a high spec."
We loved it so much we were looking at possible dates to return! We would highly recommend The Old Stables.
"The old stables is highly recommended by my quests and I would most certainly look to stay there again"
"Stayed at the Old stables with 7 friends for my birthday for the weekend and it was the perfect house!"
Lovely and clean, spacious, warm and had every emenity we needed. Owners were kind enough to leave a bottle of wine and some cake which was a nice touch- we all said we’ve 100% return for future trips!
"Great property in a brilliant location."
Plenty of walks and a choice of local pubs with good food.
"Beautiful property in an excellent location."
Great walking on the doorstep and lovely pubs within walking distance. Our whole party had a fab weekend and will hope to return. Very nice to have a bottle of wine and home made cake left by the owner Lesley. The only negative for us as 4 couples who prefer showers rather than a bath would be for another shower perhaps over the bath to eleviate the wait but everything else was absolutely top notch.
"Cottage was fitted out to a very high standard - definitely has the 'wow' factor."
Directions form Matlock 1st -class. Lesley very helpful with a couple of settling in queries. As I wrote in the guest book (and I'm a bit of a 'picky' sort) absolutely NOTHING negative to say - a most enjoyable venue for my wife, myself and our family as part of our Golden Wedding celebrations.
"The cottage was in a perfect location, down a quiet lane, but close enough to walk to the village and all its amenities."
Lovely walks from the door and further afield. The cottage was very comfortable and suitable for friends sharing a weekend away.
"We had an excellent stay."
The cottage was superb, very spacious and clean. Location was great with excellent walks straight outside. Local pubs were really nice too, especially The Poets.
"There are many steps both on the ground floor and first floor."
The property is actually on three levels.
"The Old Stables was a pleasure to call home for a few days, perfectly located for a trip to Chatsworth House and some country walks in the local area."
The house is finished and maintained to a high standard throughout We would love to stay there again.
"What a stunning cottage in a beautiful location."
I can't recommend this cottage enough, me and my friends had a wonderful stay at The Old Stables. The owner came to greet us on arrival and had left a bottle of wine and a cake, a really thoughtful touch. Thanks for a great holiday sykes!!
"Loved the location of the accommodation."
Perfect in every way, high standard throughout. Great place to party, relax and unwind with friends. Wine and cake on arrival was a lovely gesture.
"Beautiful barn, owner Lesley was very friendly & accomodating."
Barn was furnished to a very high standard, very comfortable & excellent location.
"The Stables was lovely for our party of 6 adults +2 children 2 and 4."
Location was very good being a 10/15 min walk to the village. Ashover is a lovely village with shop and traditional pubs. It is well positioned for relaxing and walking locally but also for trips out for the whole family. Lesley the owner was friendly and helpful.Would highly recommend and love to go again.
"We had a wonderful weekend with family at The Old Stables to celebrate two 60th birthdays."
The house was just perfect; plenty of space, beautifully decorated, well equipped and furnished to a very high standard. The bedrooms in particular were stunning!! With many thoughtful finishing touches (including a bottle of wine and a homemade cake!) we couldn't have asked for any more! Lesley was extremely accommodating and friendly, and was happy to help us out with any extra requests we had. The Old Stables is tucked away at the end of a quiet road, but is within a 10 minute walk of the lovely village of Ashover. The views from the house across the fields are gorgeous, particularly on a sunny day (which we were lucky enough to have plenty of!) The village itself is beautiful and we enjoyed a wonderful meal at The Black Swan - highly recommended!! Thank you again for a wonderful weekend, we can’t wait to return!
"The accommodation was spacious, clean and well equipped with everything we needed and more."
.. The attention to detail in all the rooms was tastefully decorated and high quality. The owner introduced herself and was helpful in giving details of local amenities. We didn't want to go home, beautiful house and stunning location loved it.
"Beautiful barn conversion in ideal location, thoroughly enjoyed our stay!"
"Best holiday cottage we have ever stayed in, superb quality of accommodation."
"What a gorgeous property!"
Beautiful bedrooms, comfortable beds, lovely living space. Lovely walks from the house, pubs, local shop. I’ve already booked for next year!
"Excellent accommodation in a lovely area with plenty to see and do, owners very friendly as well."
"A superb cottage in an idyllic surrounding."
Easily accessible to places of interest and towns such as Bakewll and Matlock. Would have no problem in recommending The Old Stables .
"Great cottage and perfect location."
Lesley and her husband we're great and made our stay lovely. The wine and cake went down a treat! Would definitely stay again and recommend it!
"Not only is the cottage superb, but Lesley was extremely helpful."
I've stayed in many holiday rentals - this property is up there with the best of them.
"Farm shop and café nearby very good Plenty of places to visit in surrounding area."
Accommodation perfect for family get together very well equipped and very clean. Plenty of pubs with food close by.
"Property was amazing looked good in the pictures but in reality they don't do it justice."
Love it, love it!!!
"This cottage was a complete delight."
Very spacious with an amazing top floor master bedroom and high quality fixtures and fittings throughout. Lovely location down a quiet path but only a short walk away from 3 pubs which serve really nice food. It certainly had the wow factor and we would definitely come back again.
"An extremely comfortable, well dressed and thoughtfully equipped cottage."
I would highly recommend this beautiful property.
"We booked the cottage for my Dad's surprise 70th birthday weekend and he absolutely loved it."
The photos on the website made the cottage look luxurious, but the reality was even better. The quality of all the furniture, furnishings and decor is top notch, but we still felt really comfortable and it was a home from home for the weekend. Lesley and her family should be very proud of what they have achieved in this stable conversion. I don't have a bad word to say about our time in The Old Stables. The location is perfect for exploring the Peak District. The village is a short 10 minute walk, where there are 3 pubs to choose from. We will definitely be coming again in the very near future.
"It was a family gathering to celebrate a 70th birthday."
All the family were impressed.
"Such a brilliant place to stay!"
The property is really clean and all the bedrooms are a good size with some lovely little touches of character. It's in a great location with lots to do in the surrounding areas and just a short walk from the village with a few pubs. Great property!
"2 bedrooms were brilliant but other two were rather small and one had no wardrobe."
Not ideal for 8 adults. But on the whole very good accommodation and a fantastic location.

Marsh Green Hall
Marsh Green Hall dates back to the 15th century and its history is linked to the Civil War. The stable block has been converted and is idyllically-placed on the edge of the small village of Ashover, five miles from the popular tourist town of Matlock. Situated in the hall’s grounds, along with the owner’s property, the two semi-detached properties have been meticulously renovated to a beautiful standard throughout. Retaining some exposed internal stone walls and timbers, both properties exude quality, with handcrafted, country-style kitchens boasting granite worktops, Belfast sinks and range cookers. The sitting rooms are comfortable and spacious with wood grain flooring, leather sofas and tasteful furnishings. Both properties offer contemporary bathrooms with an en-suite, a separate family bathroom and an additional ground floor cloakroom. With ample off road parking and private gardens showcasing views over open, private parkland and countryside, the properties provide excellent holiday homes with all modern comforts. A short stroll brings you to the four local inns and village shops, whilst golfers can enjoy a round on the 9-hole course in nearby Stonedge or on the Matlock golf courses. Ashover is one of the country’s largest parishes and has an extensive footpath network, with all routes coming back to the village. The surrounding area is wonderful for walking and cycling, or touring the pretty market towns and popular tourist attractions. Nearby Matlock, with its warm springs, offers interesting, independent shops, restaurants and tempting tea rooms, with Leys Hall Park providing a lovely setting for recreational activities such as bowls, tennis and boating. Chatsworth House and gardens are about 20 minutes’ drive away and Hardwick Hall and Haddon Hall are also both well worth a trip. With Crich Tramway Museum and Matlock Bath close by, there's a wealth of activities for all. For birdwatchers and nature lovers, you can enjoy taking a walk around Carsington Water along well defined paths. Both lovely properties really do sit in a delightful area of Derbyshire.
