Leave your Gower Peninsula cottage for the day and head out exploring the Gower Way, a 35-mile route crossing the peninsula from east to west, passing some fascinating historical sites along the way. Rhossili Bay, voted in the top four beaches in Britain for four years in a row, it benefits from the Atlantic swell for surfers and watersports, and fine golden sand for expert sandcastle builders. The Mumbles marks the beginning of the Gower Peninsula's coastline and is known as the Gateway to Gower, with a Victorian Pier and a lighthouse built all the way back in 1794 still standing; it’s a charming day out. Soak up the seaside ambience of Barry Island, and head on the heritage Barry Island railway for the coastal views.

Visit the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea, within easy driving distance, with their collection including boats in Swansea Marina, maritime paintings and coal-industry artefacts. On the opposite side of the peninsula find the town of Llanelli perched on the banks of the Loughor Estuary, visit the Llanelli Wetland Centre home to lagoons attracting thousands of migrating birds from all over the world, you might even meet a Caribbean flamingo!
