  • "Didn't realise this chalet was on a complex - from the picture thought we would be fairly isolated."

On directions there is no signpost to Swarland - but there is a sign to Log Cabins. Lovely kitchen and great bed but struggled with the combi boiler water heating system. Front door & handle is a problem but I guess the owner knows this. Lots of thoughtful touches but we think this chalet needs a bit of a makeover. The one next door looked better. Hope these comments help.

  • "What a beautiful wee holiday cabin!"

We had a fabulous time, staying at Harbottle Lodge for three nights. Our daughter Beatrice says it is the best holiday she has been on so far. The cabin is very comfortable, cosy, and easily sleeps 3. The kitchen looks brand new and had everything we needed. Great shower! Nice little patio furniture set out the front. You wouldn’t even know there were other cabins nearby, it is such a quiet location. There’s a laundrette behind the cabin if needed, although we didn’t go to find it. And a small play area for the kids. There’s also a bigger play ground in the village, which our daughter loved. There is a lovely little farm shop down the road, which stocks cheese, meat and a few other provisions. They also serve tea and coffee. We would also recommend The Running Fox tearoom in the village - superb breakfast! (book ahead, though). Mrs Gabb, the owner of the cabin, was excellent and we spoke on the phone ahead of arrival. We knew all we needed to know in advance of staying. I could sit here all day and write this review. Honestly, give the place a try. It’s 10/10 from us. Thank you. Definitely coming back!

Thank you so much for your kind words, I’m so glad you love it as much as we do! We’ll take that as a big compliment if it’s Beatrice’s best holiday! We look forward to welcoming you back soon, all the best Property Owner

  • "We holidayed at Harbottle Lodge for two weeks from 6 July 2022."

I’ve given it 2 stars because the shower was excellent and the bed was comfortable. Unfortunately, apart from that, the standard of this property was very low: When we arrived we could get no hot water from the taps, only from the shower. We phoned the owner about this and found out that the hot tap had to be turned on full, splashing everything around the sink including us and eventually hot water would appear but you couldn’t turn down the volume or it went cold again. The owner arranged for a plumber to call and he fiddled with the very ancient boiler but the problem didn’t improve. There was very little storage space for clothes and we had to bring a lot because we were staying for 2 weeks and we knew there was no washing machine and previous reviews had stated that the on-site laundry was not very effective. There was no wardrobe but just a short rail in the hall above all the cleaning materials and bucket and all the drawers on one of the bedside tables stuck and were unusable. The settee was uncomfortable and gave us both back-ache, although we shifted cushions around many times in an attempt to improve it. However, the bed was very comfortable. We had to open the windows because we had some hot weather but they’re such a peculiar design that the slightest breeze made them move about or slam shut. Their frames were also very dirty and bits of dirt and cobwebs fell from them. The carpets were very stained and were sticky to the touch, especially the rug in the main room. The bathroom was fine apart from the lack of hot water from the taps and a heated towel rack would have been nice. However, the shower was excellent. The photos give the impression of a light and airy interior. This was not the case; it was gloomy and we needed a light on all the time. I’ve seen a response from the owner to a review in June, where the owner stated that they had resolved the hot water, cleaning and carpet problems but this was not the case when we arrived on 6 July. We did not phone them about the issues we had, apart from the hot water issue, because there was nothing they could have done about the furniture, the cleaning or the lack of storage space for our clothes. We’ve stayed in many self-catering cottages and I’ve never given a bad review before. I suppose the cheap price of the property should have made us wary when we booked it but even so, we were very disappointed. However cheap, we expected a certain level of comfort, cleanliness and facilities.

We spoke to you initially about the problem with the hot water and arranged for a plumber to call as soon as possible, but despite calling and texting numerous times, you did not reply to us and so we had to assume that the boiler had been fixed, especially as the plumber told us it was fixed. We would happily have got the plumber out again if it was still a problem and unfortunately we are 250 miles away so we are very reliant on communication from guests and tradespeople. We have been to the cabin ourselves this week and a different plumber came out and fixed the hot water, so we apologise that it was not actually fixed properly whilst you were there. We are genuinely disappointed at your comments concerning the cleanliness and comfort of the property. We have an excellent local cleaner who does a very thorough job and always reports any issues to us. We have bought high quality furniture and the vast majority of our guests say how comfortable the cabin is, but its not possible to cater for every taste. It is a small cabin, so its difficult to provide more storage facilities for clothes, but we've found the walk in wardrobe area is adequate for most guests, including ourselves when we stay there. It is sad for us to hear that you did not enjoy your stay and we wish that we had been able to address some of your issues whilst you were there. This is our only property and we try our best to maintain a high standard for our guests. Property Owner

  • "I have already sent a complaint to yourself and the owner alas a complete waste of time."

Lodge was not as advertised in your pictures hence we were very disappointed as I had booked the holiday as a surprise present for my partner. The lodge was not cleaned to an acceptable standard, left over opened packets of food left in an uncleaned cupboard, heavily stained carpets and furniture in desperate need of replacement.Hot water was very temperamental and the bathroom sink leaked water out before we could wash. All in all a very disappointing lodge, expected better for the price paid especially as I booked it through yourselves.

Thank you for your feedback The cleaning protocols have now been changed with our new cleaner We can confirm the water temperature has been checked by a plumber and has been resolved and we have checked the carpet and have had it cleaned and we can confirm that the plug in the basin is a standard size. The furniture in the property is of good standard, although we do have to allow for some minor wear and tear as the season goes on, with having a booking every week due to the property being so popular as can be seen by ou recent fabulous reviews. We do give out our contact number pre arrival and offer two contact numbers in our welcome pack. Sykes Cottages also have a dedicated helpline for guests. We would of course have assisted immediately if we had known during your stay of any concerns and we are sorry you did not give us chance to do so. Property Owner

The cabin is well equipped and provided an ideal comfortable base to return to after long days walking the Northumbrian coast. Nowhere is too far away (the furthest I travelled was 45 minutes to visit Holy Island) and there are superb quiet sandy beaches 25 minutes away at Alnwick and Warkworth. • "Our stay at Harbottle cabin was lovely."

The cabin is located in a small cabin park called Fram park. There are only 14 cabins on site, so it’s very cosy. The atmosphere is relaxed and family and dog friendly. It’s not a party place. If you would like to stay here, you need to understand it’s a cabin in the countryside. Although the modern comforts are there, they are more basic than for example in a cottage. The only thing we really missed was a washing machine in the cabin, as the one in the park is quite expensive and doesn’t do the job properly. I would also request the cleaner to do a spring/deep clean, with attention to detail (inside of the double windows/outside of windows/corners of cabin/deep clean oven). All in all it was an amazing stay, the owners were helpful when we had a rubbish/flytip issue. We left the cabin totally relaxed. If you truly want to switch off for a few days, this is the place to be.

BUT: poor coverage in the area where the cabin is. Using our devices we found the signal to be as follows: EE: 3G, 1 bar O2: 3g, 2 bars (south side of cabin, 1 bar elsewhere or EDGE) Three: 4g, 3 bars Vodafone: unknown. So if you're planning on tethering or accessing the internet in the cabin at all, I'd strongly recommend a Three sim with all-you-can-eat data, in a phone or ipad you can tether from. Failing that, O2 is a good backup. The annoying thing is, just a few more metres south (i.e. still in Fram Park) I was getting 4G with O2! Of course if you want to disconnect from the web completely then this is the cabin for you. It was truly lovely inside.

First shower we had encountered on holiday which was safe enough for my elderly mother to use without assistance with easy taps and a non slippy floor, and doors which are easily operated. Variety of pans and cooking utensils - we cooked happily in the knowledge that everything was there. Minor point - the kitchen taps were a bit stiff! Sofa bed 'not suitable for adults' apparently - so I did not use it..not sure why. There is a green bin so I put recycling in there and had to ask about other waste. It transpires that it all goes in the green bin! - a note to this effect might be useful. There is a local mini spa which might worth advertising Both local pubs had excellent and well priced food. Gem of a local village store as well. Longframlington was an ace 'shot in the dark' for us looking for somewhere well positioned for things to do. I feel the property could be 'pushed' a bit more in terms of singing its location praises - as well as its own facilities.
