The surrounding region is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty — a paradise for walkers and lovers of country life. The magnificent waterfall of High Force is within walking distance of the hamlet and the Pennine Way passes close by. There are nearby picturesque villages to explore: Middleton, Mickleton and Romaldkirk, and the ancient market town of Barnard Castle is well worth a visit. All of the Northern Dales are within easy reach and the Lake District is less than an hour’s drive away. Fishing, riding, golf and a variety of watersports are all available locally.
