  • "Nice comfortable & well appointed cottage with everything needed for a week away."

Very cosy with the fire and central heating. As expected in November weather was mixed (including Storm Debi) so we made good use of the excellent external drying room. A great location for accessing both the coast or hills of the Western Lakes. Only downside was the lack of wi-fi all week (outside of the owners control we presume and down to the provider). Unfortunately this made pre-walk planning and general browsing & checking emails impossible. Overall though a very pleasant stay.

We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us despite the inclement weather! As for our wi-fi (or lack-of) we continue to look into ways of improving it. Thank-you for your feedback. Property Owner

  • "I loved everything about Stable End Cottage."

It is well equipped and comfortable- the cosy living room is a little tight for 6adults to relax in the evening but that’s it’s only drawback. The front garden catches the evening sun and there is a big table and chairs there with so many different birds coming and going, it’s a real delight. The hosts are friendly and helpful and we found a lovely welcome pack on our arrival. We had a lovely time in the Lake District and this was the perfect home to return to each evening.

Thank you for your positive feedback on your stay at Stable End. We are so lucky to live in this part of the Lake District and to show it off to our guests too. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your holiday here. Property Owner

  • "Great accommodation and fantastic location."

Ideal location to hike Scafell Pike and visit the lake! They also allowed us a late check out which was brilliant!! It was really warm - perhaps a bit too hot as we had to leave the door open and turn off the radiators in the bedrooms. Also some bedroom windows couldn't be opened to allow ventilation and cooling!! In addition, the fan heater came on in the dining area which we couldn't turn off - again we had to open the window (which luckily could be opened). You may want to look at this to save on your heating bills and to help the environment!! Apart from this everything else was perfect!! We loved the fact that it was on the working farm and we could visit the sheep during lambing season and the cows, cats, dogs and hens!!

Lovely to meet you all. You had some great weather for your visit here and for your climb up Skafell Pike. Thank-you for your informative feedback. We are currently waiting for a part for the boiler - hence the reason the heating had to be controlled by the radiator thermostats and not the room thermostat as would usually be the case. As for the windows in the bedroom not opening - the Lake District Planning would not consent to those windows being 'openers' as the property was an old barn. The fan heater under the table operates on a rocker switch on the unit and we are sorry that you couldn't locate it. We do try to consider the environment in all of our farm practices but am sure that there is always room for improvement. We are pleased that all-in-all this didn't spoil your holiday. The cottage is an ideal location for exploring the whole Wasdale area and very convenient for accessing the start of walks above the famous Screes, the whole Scafell area and the Mosedale Round. The scenery takes some beating as well. Or, visit the coast, It's well worth it with plenty to see and views across the Solway to the Scottish coast and Isle of Man. Stable End was spotlessly clean, comfortable, warm and cosy, (especially with freezing temperatures outside). Some food can be brought at the local camp site, the village pub does meals but you have to book for meals after 5. We drove to Gosforth and Stanton Bridge for meals. Walks off the farm. My only criticism is that the ground floor bedroom is not a double bedroom. At best it is a large single.

Hello Richard, sorry for the late feedback on this cottage. As you hired both I responded to your comments on The Old Barn and missed this one! As I said on that response - lovely to meet you all and pleased you enjoyed your stay. The ground floor bedroom is a small room but benefits from an en-suite. The information given on the property summary states " 1 x ground floor 4ft double ". This is also known as a 'Queen' sized or three-quarter/small double bed. The width is 6" smaller than a standard double. Property Owner

We've stayed in many UK holiday cottages and this experience was the best. Stable End had everything you'd want, plus a bit more (like toiletries, extra freezer space, a place for muddy boots and a drying room). It was spotlessly clean and well-organised, everything worked and there were no lengthy rules and regulations to follow. The owners were incredibly hospitable and made us feel welcome and at home immediately. They went over and above, from the thoughtful welcome pack (that included essentials, arrival snacks and beautiful eggs from their chickens), to great recommendations and suggestions about things to do, to including us in farm life and sharing local news. They were especially kind to the youngest member of the party, who got to feed a lamb and was given a memento to take home. We'll all remember this stay really fondly.

The ground floor room and toilet meant that we were able to accommodate Grandma, who could not have managed stairs, for a few days We had 5 adults in the cottage. It would have been a little cramped with 6 adults also it would not have been possible for Grandma to use the shower as there are no grab rails. I just mention this so other guests are aware. The fluffy towels were well appreciated and the welcome pack was a lovely surprise. While we chose to eat out for the duration of our stay we could easily have cooked as every utensil and appliance you may need were provided. The provision of WiFi was really welcome as there is no mobile reception in Wasdale, we weren't quite ready for a total digital detox. This cottage is part of a working farm and it was certainly unusual to glance through the bathroom window and see a sheep watching you. The owners are on site and were there to welcome us on the first night and I did get the impression when they said "ask if you need anything", they really meant it. The location of the cottage is perfect for Wast Water and lake activities and of course the omnipresent Scafell is on the door step ready to climb, alongside plenty of other challenging walks. We did find some moderate walks on the bookshelf in the holiday cottage which as a nice touch - we left another walk on the shelf for the next lot of visitors to consider. While we were blessed with excellent weather I believe this is unusual and it would be very pleasant to curl up in front of the log burner on a rainy day. As a family with 3 older children it is difficult to find a holiday to suit everyone and I am happy to say this cottage suited us all.

About the location

NETHER WASDALE

Gosforth 3.9 miles; Santon Bridge 2.3 miles

Nether Wasdale is a small village situated to the west of Wastwater, the deepest lake in Great Britain. The village is well-served with two pubs, one with its own brewery, a farm shop and café selling local produce and ice cream. This area is the birthplace of climbing and is a superb base for climbing, hiking and all outdoor pursuits. Unlike many lakes, motorised boats are forbidden on Wastwater though canoeing and kayaking are perfect for these unspoilt and tranquil waters which add to the peace and serenity of this stunning part of the Lake District National Park. Wastwater is sided by The Screes and at the head of the lake the fells of Great Gable and Scafell Pike can be reached, popular with hikers and climbers alike. The view from the summit of Great Gable is said to be the finest view in Britain. At Wasdale Head is the church of St. Olaf, one of the smallest churches in England, dating back to 1550 and its beams are said to have come from Viking long boats. Close by are the villages of Santon Bridge and Gosforth.
