Find your bearings and walk around the Roman City Walls which, incredibly, remain intact and provide a fascinating insight into Chester's past. Look out for the exquisite Eastgate Clock and Rufus Court, a delightful little courtyard with cafés and boutiques. Alternatively, join a guided walking or open-top bus tour.
The city centre is crammed with distinctive black and white timbered buildings, including The Rows - a unique two-storey shopping gallery dating back to the Middle Ages. They also provide a grandstand view for the Town Crier Proclamation, held regularly throughout the summer. More shopping, including high street names and exclusive independents, can be found at street level and within the Grosvenor Shopping Centre.
From gourmet delis to award-winning restaurants and stylish gastro-pubs, expect to eat well in Chester. There's also a great choice of pubs and wine bars.
Step back to Roman times at the Roman Amphitheatre and fascinating 'Dewa Roman Experience'. Visit the Grosvenor Museum and the spectacular 900-year-old Cathedral. Enjoy a riverside cruise or a picnic in the Grosvenor Park - there's a miniature railway for little ones too.
